Sanyukta was delighted to receive her mother's phone call early in the morning. It was almost 5am when Sanyukta's mother had called. She terribly missed her voice and wanted to see her so much. They talked for more than an hour. Sanyukta's mother told her that her father was very upset because she had left the house without telling him anything and so he did not like that her mother called Sanyukta when he was in the house. Sanyukta also learnt that ever since she left, her father was not keeping well and so he took a week's leave and made it impossible for Sanyukta's mother to phone her daughter during the day.
"Just his BP has risen a little. Nothing else",Sanyukta's mom said.
"Please take care of him mamma. He is very stubborn and always forgets to take his meds on time. You have to make sure he takes them daily. And what about his TSH?" asked a concerned Sanyukta.
"It is below 5 units",said Sanyu's mom.
"Thank god. Atleast that is okay."
"Acha sun, you met the guy Ankit was talking about?"
"About my marriage? He even told you about it?"
"Arrey your dad gave him the idea. To set you up with someone in his company."
"Wah! Just what my life needed."
"Arrey I know that you don't condone his choices especially when Ankit is involved but what I've heard about this guy, he sounds to be very nice."
"Acha? Ankit has told you everything about him. But he hasn't told me anything at all!"
"Why should he tell you? You two are working together na?"
"What do you mean ma?" Sanyukta was very confused.
"Arrey Ankit said his name is...Parth Kashyap or something. He said that you both had been working together for two months and are bonding really well. So basically you know him more than me."
Sanyukta did not speak. She was silent. Kaustuki was still sleeping and the sun had just come out. But she just sat still on her bed. She did not know what to say. And how could she say? Ankit never once told her about Parth. He only kept saying about his employee, anonymous employee. But Parth? Why? She always thought him to be a god friend. Moreover, did Parth know about this proposal? Is that why he is acting so friendly with her? She demanded answers.
"Hello? Hello? Sanyu beta?" came her mother's voice from the other end of the phone.
"Ha...ha ma. I'm here!" said Sanyukta.
"Kaha kho gayi thi?"
"Arrey nothing ma. I only had two bars on my phone. Now I have four."
"Acha, you have to tell me how much you like this guy. We decided that, your father and me, that maybe you should have a say in this marriage too. afterall, you are getting married. So Ankit gave you and Parth a chance to bond. I think for the first time, you would agree with your brother."
Sanyukta was furious. Again! She realized that Ankit was doing to suppress her career. If, for some chance of fate, she and Parth did get married, Ankit knew that Sanyukta would have to leave SanCorp and move to Mumbai with Parth. And God only knew if she would be able to work again. Or she would have to be one of those stuck at home wives only serving their husbands. Nevertheless, she continued her normal conversations with her mother before hanging up around 6.30am.
She got up from bed and put the kettle on. Kaustuki was up. She went to her bathroom and brushed her teeth. She did not have any idea how she would face Parth after this that night at the party. She had to talk to Ankit first about this. Just because he is older and their father trusts him most, doesn't mean that he can control her like he controls everyone at Divergent, probably. She needed answers and she needed them immediately. She first decided to call Ankit but then she realized that talking to him face to face would be the best solution.
Kaustuki was putting the tealeaves in the boiling kettle. Sanyukta went to the kitchen and sat down on the table. She looked at the table, not even saying "good morning" to Kaustuki.
"What happened? Did not sleep well?" Kaustuki asked.
"I did, until I got my mother's phone call this morning", sighed Sanyukta.
"Kyun?" asked Kaustuki. "I thought you missed her so much. Everything okay at home?"
Sanyukta and Kaustuki had bonded over the days and she literally told her everything. Starting from the office politics to her annoying brother's visit to the MCP Randhir to the adorable Parth. But she still did not mention anything about meeting Randhir at the caf before joining SanCorp and almost' falling for him. Kaustuki served her tea and sandwiches and Sanyukta began telling her everything her mother had told her a few hours ago. "I knew bhai was upto something disgusting...but this is beyond anything he has ever done! What am I supposed to do?"
Kaustuki took a sip of her tea and said, "What you need to do is calm down and think about tonight. It's a big day for you and SanCorp. Just put this thought behind you for a while and breathe."
"Acha? Kaise? If I see Parth..."
"Then you will feel grateful for having a good friend like him. Marriage...we'll think of something. Right now, you need to calm yourself down. Acha, have you decided what you will be wearing tonight?"
Amongst this excitement and chaos, Sanyukta had completely forgotten to look through her newly designed wardrobe that Kaustuki took such pain to create.
"I knew it! I know you well Sanyu!" said Kaustuki finishing her sandwiches.
The two girls went into Sanyukta's closet and surfed through her new clothes. Ultimately, Sanyukta decided to wear a white embroidered salwar kameez with studs.
"And incase you need to carry something, take a clutch", suggested Kaustuki.
Sanyukta really adored Kaustuki's sense of style. She tried on the salwar kameez and she really liked the way she looked. Not often, can you stand infront of the mirror and say to yourself, "You look pretty." Well, Sanyukta had just done that.
The evening's grand celebration was at Hyatt. It was one of the most classy and expensive places where you could think of going for a party. SanCorp was big on celebrations. Even though, Vardhan sir had some reservations, he accepted the CEO's offer to host the inauguration of the Smart House project at Hyatt. The place was lavishly decorated but not much to send out the message that it was a corporate event. The team had been told that many politicians and high profile people were going to be there as the Smart House was everyone's topic of curiosity. The event was to start from 7 sharp (Vardhan sir was very strict about punctuality). Sanyukta arrived with Kaustuki and found Parth standing in front of the main entrance while everyone else was entering.
Sanyukta froze. It felt as if she had butterflies in her stomach. She squeezed Kaustuki's hand. Kaustuki quietly asked, "Kya hua?"
"Pa...Parth", she quietly replied.
Kaustuki looked and smiled. "Nothing will happen. Come."
Parth saw the two girls and smiled. "I was waiting for you", he said.
Sanyukta had a little trouble smiling back but did it anyway. She then introduced him to Kaustuki.
"You were right Sanyukta",said Parth, shaking his hand with Kaustuki. "Your friend is sexy".
And they all burst out laughing.
"No seriously, you are. It's a pleasure meeting you. I've heard a lot about you", said Parth.
"Likewise, although Sanyukta hardly mentions you", said Kaustuki.
Parth looked at Sanyukta. She smiled. "I am joking. She does. She does mention you a lot," said Kaustuki.
"Good", smiled Parth.
Just then, Randhir got down from his car and spotted the trio laughing near the entrance. Flames of anger arose within him and he frowned. None of them, obviously, noticed him. He approached them with the intention of telling them that there was more important things in the world than giggling. Just as he approached them his were fixed on Sanyukta. She was wearing a white salwar kameez. White. Just like she was wearing the first day they met at the caf. The anger vanished and a calm and composed feeling replaced it. She was looking beautiful. Her eyes! Oh her eyes! That little kajal that highlighted the eye line...and her hair open and curled. Randhir just stared at her. Speechless.
Parth noticed him and said, "Randhir. Hi!"
The girls turned and Randhir was back to his angry mood.
"I just want to tell you all that if you are done with your giggling and joking, we have to get inside. The ceremony is about to begin." And saying this, he stormed inside past Sanyukta.
"Who was that?" asked Kaustuki, knowing the answer.
"That MCP Randhir", frowned Sanyukta. "Chalo,we must get inside jaldi."
The ceremony was indeed glamourous. The CEO Mr. Mahesh Pai introduced the entire Smart House Project team and thanked the team from Divergent saying, "Both these companies have two truly gifted people who have made this project possible. They both come from the same family." Sanyukta and Ankit looked at each other but did not smile atleast not Sanyukta. Vardhan Shukla gave a brief description of the entire project and presented a presentation to the delegated guests. He thanked the CFO ,Raj Nayar sir and his entire team, especially Randhir who "is truly gifted and hard to come across". Randhir felt very proud and smiled. The guests, one by one, came up to the microphone and spoke a few words.
Ankit approached Randhir. "Kaisa hain?"
"Arrey, fine", smiled Randhir. Ankit and him had really bonded over the years. They shared the same interests and hobbies and both wanted to rise and succeed. But Randhir never discussed Sanyukta with him.
"You did an amazing job with this project Randhir. I must applaud you for that", said Ankit.
"Thanks, but we could not have done it without your help", said Randhir.
Kaustuki was taking random pictures. Parth and Sanyukta were busy talking to one another.
"You like Parth, Randhir?" asked Ankit, all of a sudden.
Randhir looked at Ankit, a bit taken aback.
"I mean what you think of him?" he asked again.
What Randhir truly thought of him was that he was an arrogant freak who loved to boast about himself and flirt with girls. That is why he came to Delhi, probably. To flirt and talk rubbish with girls. But he obviously could not say that to Parth's boss.
"I think he is a truly amazing architect. I mean he works for you right. So he has to be amazing."
Ankit smiled. "So, do you think he'll make a good husband for Sanyukta?"
Randhir was stunned and shocked. He looked at Ankit like he hit him with a sharp object. He was at a loss of words.
"Sorry what?" he asked again.
"You and Sanyukta are colleagues. So you know her well. I was thinking, rather I am quite sure that Parth would be the ideal person to keep my little sister happy for the rest of her life. He is an architect, works in my company and they seem to really like each other", said Ankit.
Randhir looked towards Parth and Sanyukta talking and laughing. He touched her shoulder and she smiled. It made him angry, terribly angry.
"Yeah...well, that is upto you and Sanyukta to decide. Excuse me will you Ankit?"
And saying this, he went over to the bar and order for a gin. He drank the gin in one go and ordered for another. He did not know why, but for the first time in years he had felt this heat, this anger in him. He looked at Sanyukta again, she looked happy with Parth and this made him want to punch Parth's face. He could not explain this anger, but it was unusual.
Sanyukta, after sometime excused herself from Parth and head towards the girls' washroom. She still did not get a chance to talk to Ankit about the marriage proposal yet but she knew she would have to. Randhir saw her going towards the corridors, away from the lounge and followed her.
Meanwhile, Parth was helping himself to some of the spring rolls that were being served. Just then, Vidushee approached him. Parth saw her and said, "Vidushee hi. You look lovely in that dress."
"Don't flatter yourself Parth", she said calmly
Parth could not understand what she meant. "Are you okay Vidushee. You look like you had a little too much to drink."
"I am not drunk if that is what you're saying."
"Phir?"
"Nothing, its just that I've been seeing you for a while and it seems that you are getting along with Sanyukta pretty well."
Parth smiled. "Yeah, I am. She is a pretty good friend."
"Just a friend?" Vidushee raised her brows.
Parth looked at her carefully and with a stern expression. "Yes. Just a friend, Vidushee."
Vidushee grinned. She reached out her hand and wiped some ketchup that had stained the right side of Parth's lips. "Understandable. But just for the record, if you ever get tired of her or find her a little too unexciting', you have my number just give me a call."
She turned around and went away. Parth just stood there, stunned.
Meanwhile, Sanyukta had just exited the washroom. She took her cell phone out to see if her mother had called. But there were no missed calls. The corridor was empty. And a little darker. Probably this was how the interiors were supposed to be in 5 stars hotels. She was just about to get into the lounge when suddenly; Randhir grabbed her and pulled her towards the wall. He then pressed her against it and blocked her way.
"What the hell Randhir? What are you doing?" asked a surprised Sanyukta.
"You tell me", said Randhir.
"Dekho jane do mujhe. Or else I'll scream. My brother is here too you know."
Randhir pressed her mouth with his right hand. "Now try. Scream."
Sanyukta made some noise from her mouth that wasn't understandable.
"What happened? Can't shout?"
Sanyukta then using her free hands shook off Randhir's hand from her mouth.
"I knew that you were selfish and loved torturing your colleagues. But I never knew that you harassed them as well!" said Sanyukta, loudly. But the noise from the lounge was louder. A song was on the tracks and everyone was laughing loudly.
"Well, maybe there are things that you don't know about me as well. So now we are even."
"What on earth are you saying?"
"Oh,so now you don't know what I am saying? Why don't you ask your fiance, Mr. Architect?"
Sanyukta was taken aback. "How did you know?"
"Why? Was it supposed to be a surprise for all of us?"
"Look Randhir. I am still processing..."
"Well, maybe I should tell Ankit everything."
"Ankit told you this?"
"Does it matter?"
"And what will you tell him? What do you mean by everything?"
"Everything", said Randhir softly and slowly approaching towards Sanyukta. "What happened between us at the caf."
Sanyukta was struck with shock. She was less angry and more stunned to Randhir even say this. Using all her efforts, she pushed Randhir away. "What happened between us Randhir?"
"You don't remember? We made out", smiled Randhir.
"Made out? You mean had sex? We talked nothing else. Or are you too drunk to remember?"
"Ankit seems to like me a lot and he will believe me over you. So even if I do say that you and I made out, maybe, he would not consider this marriage proposal at all. And I wonder how poor Parth would feel when he will know that his would-be-wife is no longer a virgin?" smiled Randhir.
"Why do you care?" shouted Sanyukta.
Randhir looked at her and the smile vanished.
"Why do you care Randhir?" Sanyukta asked again, her eyes tearing up a little.
"I don't...I don't care at all!"
"Really? Then why are you so angry about me marrying someone else?"
"It is Parth."
"And what if it wasn't? What if I suddenly decide to marry someone else?"
Randhir was silent. He did not have any answer to this question. A tear rolled down Sanyukta's cheek. The anger on Randhir's face vanished again and he was about to rub it off Sanyukta's cheek but she turned her faced telling him not to.
"Sanyukta...I..."
"Shut up Randhir! Shut up!" She grabbed his shirt collar, pulled him towards herself, and looked straight at his eyes. "I demand an answer. Why do you care so much about me?"
Randhir stayed at her eyes, her watery eyes.
"Admit it Randhir", said Sanyukta, softly. "Even you felt something that night at the caf. You are just scared because of what happened to your parents..."
"That is not it!" shouted Randhir. But Sanyukta still held onto his collar. "Then answer me damn it!" she shouted.
Randhir just stared at her. He lost words. "Because I...I think..." and before any other words came out of his mouth, their lips met.
Sanyukta was shocked. Randhir grabbed her waist with both his hands and kissed her passionately. Sanyukta wanted to push him away, but somehow she could not. The clutch fell from her hands and she wrapped her arms around him and returned the kiss. Both of them never felt so real.
The music inside the lounge had softened but it was still louder than the corridor. There was no one there. Randhir and Sanyukt. It was the night of the caf revisited. How that night should have ended. They did not care that the entire SanCorp was there and if they were caught, their lives would be ruined. The moment froze. They did not care. They were with each other and for that moment, that's all that mattered.
