Hello Friends this is Laxmi

Laxmi, a victim of acid attack and a standard-bearer for the movement to end acid attacks, has been selected by the US for prestigious International Women of the Courage Award.

Laxmi would receive the award from US First Lady Michelle Obama at an awards ceremony at the State Department here. She was 16 when an acquaintance threw acid on her face while she waited at a bus stop in New Delhi's busy Khan Market in 2005, disfiguring her permanently.
Her attacker, a friend's 32-year old brother, planned to use the acid to destroy Laxmi's face after she refused to respond to his romantic advances.

Many acid attack victims never return to normal life: They often go to great lengths to hide their disfigurement, many forgo education or employment rather than appear in public, and suicide is not uncommon. But Laxmi did not hide,
She became the standard-bearer in India for the movement to end acid attacks. She made repeated appearances on national television, gathered 27,000 signatures for a petition to curb acid sales, and took her cause to the Indian Supreme Court,

Laxmi's petition led the Supreme Court to order the Indian central and state governments to regulate immediately the sale of acid, and the parliament to make prosecutions of acid attacks easier to pursue,
Much is left to be done, and Laxmi continues to advocate on behalf of acid attack victims throughout India for increased compensation, effective prosecution and prevention of acid attacks, and rehabilitation of survivors,

we say the woman is a goddess.

But on the other side the woman is humiliated
If the woman does not want to accept a relationship.
If she refuses,
then the girl is attacked.

Is it because our male-dominated culture.
Even today there is a discrimination between boy and girl.
Boys are taught that they are better than girls
so after the refusal
his ego seems to be hurt.

It is the parents responsibility
they must teach the child that
Refusal of an inseparable part of life.

in every family Boy and girl should get equal rights and respect

i salute to Laxmi for her courage

Manu ...What a great way to salute the women will power and the grit and determination

on this occasion...International Women's Day !👏👏

Many acid attack victims never return to normal life: they often go to great lengths to hide their disfigurement, many forgo education or employment rather than appear in public, and suicide is not uncommon. But Laxmi did not hide," the State Department said.

US first Lady Michelle Obama has felicitated Indian acid attack victim Laxmi after she won the International Women of Courage Award for successfully leading the campaign against acid attacks on women in India.

Obama and the large crowd at the State Department auditorium was moved and touched when Laxmi, a standard-bearer of the movement to end acid attacks, recited a poem recounting her experience on the occasion on Tuesday. "You haven't thrown acid on my face; you threw it on my dreams.

You didn't have love in your heart; you had acid in it," Laxmi recited soon after receiving the prestigious award along with several other women from different parts of the world including Afghanistan and Fiji. The original poem was in Hindi.

Recognition for her effort through this award, is a great encouragement and motivation for the girls and women of India, many of whom still are not able to speak out against the atrocities inflicted upon them,

Laxmi said soon after receiving the award. "After this award, girls of India would think, if Laxmi can do this, I can also raise my voice against injustice," Laxmi told PTI in an interview.

Much is left to be done, and Laxmi continues to advocate on behalf of acid attack victims throughout India for increased compensation, effective prosecution and prevention of acid attacks, and rehabilitation of survivors.

Last year, Nirbhaya, the courageous 23-year-old girl whose brutal gang rape and murder on a moving bus in Delhi in December 2012 triggered widespread protests, was honoured with the award!

In order to be a better and evolved society , we must get our house in order !

In our quest to be the best ,sometimes we forget to take care of ourselves...and the negative elements in our family !!

It is important that the women get emotional support from her peers and family members !

When you educate a women , you educate an entire generation!

Empower yourself by standing tall in the home front and in the workplace as well

and successfully achieve your goals !

A woman teaches a man what sharing and caring is all about !

I salute to Lakshmi for her courage !

Thank you Manu !

Thanks Manu for the information. Acid attack is the most barbaric act and the height of insensitivity.
Generally such incidents occur when a girl resorts to combat in order to stop provocations of eveteasing or an attempt to destroy her modesty. The culprit in a punishing mood avenges on her by throwing acid on her face and body. As a consequence her physical features gets distorted. Rectifying the same incurs lot of expenses which is beyond the reach of a common person.
However the Govt has banned the sale of acids yet the illegal sale is in vogue and the anti social elements involved in these crimes have no problem in procuring . Hence more stringent rules is required to stop the illegal sale of devastating products. Swift and stringent punishment can create a fear in the minds of potential culprits. This can help in curbing this henious crime.
My salutation to laxmi for her valour and showing the strength to bring her life back on the track. Hats off to her .
