Wonderful post Manu 😊
Laxmi is an ideal person for many such ill fated women.
I wish the culprits get an equally gruesome punishment for their inhumane acts...
A huge salute to women like Laxmi who carry on with their life and fight with the odds after facing huge setbacks in life!!

Great post Manu.. My heart goes out for her but at the same time salute to her courage for moving forward in life 👏

I remember watching a similar very brutal acid attack story on a crime based show.. A young girl somewhere from a village in north India, was acid attacked by a person from her family acquaintance- again for the same reason of not responding to his romantic advances. He literally poured a can full of burning acid on her face on her own house's terrace where she was sleeping aside her parents and younger sister.

The more shocking part of the story is ahead. The culprit's (the youth along with 2-3 friends of different age groups, one of them was a grocery store owner in their locality) families were not ready to believe that their sons/husbands can do any such act, and they did their best to save them!

As a result, after 10 years of the crime, they are freely roaming. In fact leading their lives happily. The main culprit got married and is having 2 children. On the other hand the victim's family is still suffering.. They had to marry their younger daughter to a place far away, owing to the threats they were getting. The victim's facial organs were completely burnt. She had to undergo many surgeries to reconstruct her face.. still 10+ years after the incident her face is in such a condition that she has to hide it.. The episode also mentioned that she has filed a petition to the government to let her end her life..

Laxmi's story ...life after that fateful attack !

First Lady Michelle Obama paid tribute to the 10 chosen for the award, saying the winners should be an inspiration to women around the world. "When we see these women raise their voices, and move their feet and empower others to create change, we need to realise that each of us has that same power, and that same obligation," Obama

"Because it was not my fault" says Laxmi on being asked about her story.

"I too had some dreams and wanted to live them but it was not my fault that I was attacked with acid.

"Why has the society boycotted me?" Just because my face looks too scary to be seen or I do not look like you?

In fact, people who are born with disabilities are humbly accepted by the society, why not me then?" says Laxmi . After the attack on that fateful day...

She kept screaming for help but no one stepped forth. Everyone ran in the opposite direction.

A politician's driver took her to a hospital, where she had to stay for the next 10 weeks.

Next trauma for her was when her brother suffered from tuberculosis and father died. She took a brave step to earn bread and butter for the family.

It took her eight long years to stand back in public with confidence and without burqa. She tried for multiple jobs but not a single company hired her only due to her looks. No one even bothered to hire her talent.

Laxmi credits only her family, advocate and doctor for supporting her when she was all alone and they only tried to build her confidence. She blamed the society, the system and the conservative thinking of people due to which she had to suffer inspite of not being accused.

Lastly, she said in an interview that-- he did not throw acid on my face but on my dreams. However, she is now proud that she collected herself for a big change and for betterment of the society.
She now has friends who are all acid attack survivors and mostly blind!!

Sonali. I saw it on Crime Patrol, the story was heart-wrenching.
Salute to Laxmi, there's a shortage of words to describe her grit. All one can say is, may the tribe of such courageous girls increase.
