The kind of girl Alia is playing is supposed to be a tamilian born in Chennai and Tamil is her first language if I remember the book correctly vs a Kalki whose first language is not Tami

Without posting too many details about myself I will say Vidya's background is similar to mine and that is why I recognized the accent 😆. No one is without an accent, if Alia speaks Tamil like a 'modern girl' like the producers say she will, she will sound like a person speaking Tamil with a Hindi accent, not like a Tamilian which is what a girl from Chennai will speak like. I am guessing your friend is not born in Chennai or Tamil Nadu because it is rather impossible to speak Hindi without an accent if you are from the south. I have tried, you cannot get rid of it completely😆. So your friend deserves praise especially if he was born in the South. But the majority do not lose it.

I am harping on this a lot because this is a book about 2 cultures and states, language and accent is a big part of it, I loved the book, was looking forward to the movie, now this puts a damper on it thinking of the licenses that might have been taken if basic premises are not matched to majority of reality. 😔.

Oh well. Would be interesting to see the reception of the southern press, I am expecting hostility and howls of why was a Southern actress not cast because Tamilians are super proud of their language and Hindi is not popular there, but I am willing to be pleasantly surprised and proven wrong.

Blame it on Karan Johar and yourself Aalia you two started it. Its better for a newbie have an original identity being a 2nd someone never benefits.

Aalia is smarter than Bebo. She is yet to sign stupid films the way Bebo did and unlike her she does not speak anything scandalous.

I don't blame Kareena either for not wanting a newcomer to be compared to her...Kareena's expression might have been a little rude but what she said was actually very good advice for Alia..why would she want to be Kareena..she should be Alia. You would expect Kareena to be happy that someone wants to be like her but she didn't.

I don't know about others..but Alia doesn't remind me of Kareena at all onscreen..other than both are natural actresses onscreen and they come from filmi family and that they are both light skinned.

It's not just with Alia..Bollywood is obsessed with so and so is the next Maduri the next Kareena blah blah blah..wasn't it Parineeti who has been compared to Vidya?
