Bri,
Lupita was cast for the role in 12 Years a Slave, because the character warranted a young, black female to play it!
It would have been applause worthy, if a black female was cast instead of a white actress like Sandra Bullock in a mainstream / big-budget film like Gravity.
Hollywood is just as racist as Bollywood, when it comes to casting 'unconventional' looking actors in mainstream / popular films and roles!

Cate's was the most well-deserved award of the evening! I wish Leo would have got his award too, but the film was too controversial for the Oscars!
PS: Loved Lupita's speech...especially her last line, about dreams being valid, no matter where you come from! I wonder who writes their speeches, almost all the speeches during Oscar night were fabulous and looked pretty spontaneous and unrehersed to me!

Atleast a black female was cast there. But in India we have a Punjabi woman playing a North East Indian icon...

When I saw Will Smith on stage, I knew which film was awarded Best Picture. Just saying.

Couldn't a black woman play lead role in Gravity? How many rom coms have white man falling for a black woman? Producers and Directors will have gall when Audience will leave their bias and accept it.
