Are the younger actresses smarter?

I was just thinking yesterday that we have younger girls opting for meaty roles like Parineeti in HTP, Alia in Highway or Shraddha in Aashiqui...

But when I compare that to the more experienced actresses, it seems like they want to take on crap...For example Priyanka in Zanjeer, Krish... Katrina in Dhoom-3...or Kareena in the various crappy films shes done.

I feel like the younger generation is pushing for better roles...Funnily enough, both Shraddha/Parineeti made it into almost all Best Actress nominations last year...and big stars like Kareena, Katrina, Priyanka didn't.

I read an article about Parineeti where she said she rejected lots of movies opposite big stars because she wanted to do substantial roles. Which I applaud her for...Even Alia and Shraddha (lets put aside whether they acted good or not) but hats off for going for full fledged roles like A2 or Highway... instead of typical films like Rowdy Rathore or Dhoom 3, I mean the thought definitely counts here.


I really like how they're so focused and determined and wont do "any" film that comes their way, your thoughts?

The best roles were selected by the actresses of the 90s/early 2000s. Part of the reason was they knew how to act, part of the reason was those times there were better scripts.

Older actresses pick dumb roles to play heroine against the Khans/Kumars/Roshans who are making dumb movies right now. Whereas the younger lot are much more experimental with their work and can afford to do so cos they have more time in their career as opposed to the late 20s/early 30s A list actresses.Though PC does mostly experimental stuff. So does Vidya. Kareena will never do anything different in her career cos she is lazy.

Pari thinks she's making smart choice so but sadly she's not. She is doing same rom coms and basically repeating same type of roles. So as of now, no I don't find her smart. It is too early to say anything about shardha and alia. Shardha just did one movie. I think alia is making smart choices.

Among all actresses right now, Deepika Vidya priyanka are making best choices. Priyanka and Vidya had bad last year but they still made good choices by picking movies like barfi Kahani dirty picture fashion. Deepika on other hand Is making best choices. She is doing movies which will be critically acclaimed as well as box office success and seems like she will continue to. Kareena was making good choices at jab we met and bodyguard time but now she's making bad choices.

On the other hand sonam and anushka line up seems great

The only actress from the more senior lot who is smart is Deepika, although her future films look really crappy to me personally.

The new crop of young actresses are indeed making smarter choices in movies. They are avoiding flowerpot roles and seeking something substantial. I don't think it is that they are actually smarter, but they have the privilege of choice many older actresses did not.

- Audiences are more receptive to experimental cinema and are somewhat tired of same old same old

- The younger crop of new actors are not as egotistical as the Khans and are willing to give women meaty roles

- To a certain extent the likes of PC, Kareena, Vidya did prove that good female leads can carry a film

Finally there indeed is more dignity to do a flop movie but a good appreciated role rather than a super hit but useless two-bit role. I think more than just smart the new crop is a lot more strong willed and doesn't want to be glossed over or taken for granted by male stars. That some have star affiliations does help a bit.

Bollywood still has a long way to go for women in cinema. We still live in a hero-heroine oriented industry where heroes have extended shelf lives while heroines expire very quickly. This new crop may not be the Meryl Streep of Bollywood, but hopefully they will pave the way so that a woman can be old but still get meaty roles and be a legend.

Agreed, I honestly used to think Aishwarya and Kareena would go all the way and make this happen but clearly that was just wishful thinking.

It's the audience that has grown up and started to accept the new-age kind of movies. These actresses are just signing what works these days. On one side they have masala movies, where there are only flower pot roles which will lead you to be the next Asin with 100 crore hits but no new movie in hand.

Older actress have opertunities to work with big names and big banners . Younger actress can afford to take risk as they are freshers . One wrong move by older actress and they will be termed old , time finish etc etc. Younger actress have not yet jumped in number game yet. Once you reach top you try to do rubbish movies just to be on top.
