his is the year of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Taal, Kachche Dhaage, Sarfarosh and also Biwi No.1 and Dillagi.
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy release their first album, Dus, the soundtrack of a film that was never completed. The album marketed by T-Series does well. They also release Dillagi (which has three other composing entities), Shool, Rockford (as co-composers again) and Bhopal Express.
Vishal-Shekhar and Salim-Sulaiman make their debuts as co-composers in Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi, another multi-composer film. But they compose only one song together (with Samrat) while both also sing separately and Vishal writes lyrics. Two of today's frontline singers, KK and Shaan, also make their debuts, with KK billed as Krishna Kumar - KK had earlier sung in the dubbed Sapnay.
Sandeep Chowta makes his Hindi debut as song composer with Mast. The film marks the adult debut of today's busiest singer Sunidhi Chauhan, who is recommended to Chowta by Sonu Nigam. Lyricist Nitin Raikwar gets the first of his very few solo films.
Sanjay Dutt makes his full-fledged debut with 'Aye Shivani' in Khoobsurat, which also marks Shraddha Pandit's adult debut. The film marks the debut of writer Sanjay Chhel as lyricist as well, apart from as a director. Salman Khan makes his debut as a playback singer too in Hello Brother with the song 'Chandi ki daal' with Alka Yagnik.
Laxmikant-Pyarelal's Jai Hind - their last completed film - releases in the theatres two years after the music's audio is out. The film and the music both go unsung. The song 'Padosan pakdi gayi' (Alka-Udit) is the last film song written by Verma Malik.
The year is marked by the exit of two legends - Kidar Sharma passes away on April 29, while Hasrat Jaipuri dies on September 17. Music director Jagmohan Bakshi (the second half of the small-time Sapan-Jagmohan duo) passes away on February 26.
Ismail Darbar makes a sledgehammer debut with the all-hit score of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, which boasts of the super-hits 'Nimbuda nimbuda' (Kavita Krishnamurthi-Karsan Sargathia), 'Aankhon ki gustakhiyaan' (Kavita-Sanu) and 'Dholi taro dhol baaje' (Kavita-Vinod Rathod-Karsan).
The other hits are 'Chand chhupa' (Alka-Udit), 'Kaipo chhe' (Shankar Mahadevan-KK-Damyanti Bardal-Jyotsna Hardikar), 'Tadap tadap' (KK-Dominique) and the title-track (Kavita-Mohammed Salamat-Dominique). The connoisseurs liked 'Man Mohini' (Shankar) and 'Albela sajan' (Ustad Sultan Khan-Kavita-Shankar).
Taal is the more hyped score of the year because it brings together Anand Bakshi and Subhash Ghai with A.R.Rahman. Rahman's hits in the film include the title-track by Alka and Udit (a clever use of the metre of 'Kuch kehta hai yeh saawan' from Mera Gaon Mera Desh) and 'Ishq bina' (Anuradha Sriram-Sujatha-Sonu-A.R.Rahman) along with other popular songs like 'Kariye na' (Alka-Sukhwinder), 'Kahin aag lage' (Asha-Richa Sharma-Aditya Narayan), 'Ni main samajh gayi' (Richa-Sukhwinder) and 'Mere paas hai tu' (Hariharan-Sukhwinder). Richa Sharma's career goes on an upswing with this film.
