Shilpa halts Metro's progress
By: Vickey Lalwani
February 9, 2007

Shilpa Shetty
UTV has been going to town claiming that their film Metro is still top priority for Shilpa Shetty, despite her busy schedule in England after the Big Brother win.

However, the fact is that Shilpa has now cancelled the film's schedule slated for early February.

Shetty recently called up the film's director Anurag Basu to express her inability to reach India in time.

New dates

At the moment, Shilpa is only giving priority to mandatory commitments post Big Brother.

Says an insider, "After emerging victorious, Shilpa has been getting several offers in London so she wants to make the most of it. But because of this delay, all the other actors in Metro will have to allot new dates for their combination scenes that need to be shot. Frankly, Anurag Basu and UTV have no choice but to grin and bear it."

Basu helpless

Meanwhile, Metro's delay has consequently interrupted Anurag's other project Suicide Bomber with Vishesh Films.

When contacted, Mahesh Bhatt admits, "Anurag has informed me that he needs more time before he can start working on Suicide Bomber. He says his schedule has been messed up because of Shilpa's dates for Metro."

Bhatt further adds, "I have finished working on Suicide Bomber's script; now I need Anurag to sit with me on it for the next two months. I want Anurag and nobody else for this film, but I don't know when we'll start.

Under normal circumstances we would have gone on floors by July, but now I don't know when that will happen. Anurag didn't give me a fixed date. I guess even he doesn't know when he'll get free from Metro."
When contacted, Anurag Basu preferred not to comment.

Shilpa seeks Siddhivinayak's blessings on arrival
MUMBAI: Fresh from her win in the 'Celebrity Big Brother' show, Shilpa Shetty went straight to the Siddhivinayak temple on her arrival here from London on Saturday to seek the blessings of Lord Ganesh.

"Shilpa believes in Ganeshji. She has been going to the temple every Tuesday for the past eight months," Dal Bhagwagar, Shilpa's publicist, said.

Shilpa was accompanied by her parents and well-wishers. "She walks from her Versova home to the temple every Tuesday," Bhagwagar said.

"She says she has a lot of faith in Ganeshji," Bhagwagar said when he was asked what Shilpa sought from the elephant god.

Asked if Shilpa, who recently spoke about her single status, had sought a partner in her prayers, Bhagwagar said, "She went to the temple to offer prayers. She wanted to thank the lord for whatever she has received."

Shilpa is flooded with marriage proposals!
by Debasis Jana

Shilpa is flooded with marriage proposals. After her 'Big Brother' victory, it seems the guys have suddenly wakened up to marry her. Not only Indians, but a lot of Brits are also showing keen interest.
"It's such feeling of pride for me as an Indian to be called out by name by on the streets of London . My mom had predicted that one day I'd be world-famous. Of course all Bollywood actors are famous across the world. But this?! I don't believe it. I feel proud that an Indian is being given so much love and respect," said the apparently proud actress with huge glow on her face.
Shilpa's mom Sunanda Shetty however has no intentions of finding a groom in Britain for her daughter. There was rumour that Sunanda Shetty is keenly finding a Brit groom for Shilpa. Ruling out this rumour, Shilpa in a recent interview said, "Where do these things come from? Knowing my mom, do you think she's ever made a loose statement like that? My mom has better things to do than look for a groom for me. And right now marriage is the last thing on my mind." When asked about a widely-quoted interview from a British paper had Shilpa quoted her as saying she's in love with a married man who has two children, Shilpa said, "Why would I say such a thing to anyone? I'd love to know who this 'friend' of mine is. I wonder why anyone would want to contrive a man in my life. I'm very sadly single."

Shilpa to speak on racism in London
By Subhash K. Jha, IANS

View Shilpa Shetty - Picture GalleryAfter winning British reality TV show 'Celebrity Big Brother', Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty has really hit the bull's eye. She's now all set to speak on racial discrimination at the Commonwealth Day in London March 12.

'Yes, I'll speak at the Commonwealth Day. Only four people will be giving a speech ... And I'm one of them. It's freaking me out. This year the theme is 'Respecting Differences and Promoting Understanding'. It is about racism. And it's an issue that I'm now associated with. I better deliver. I'll be sharing the platform with world leaders and the Queen,' Shilpa told IANS.

She has hired an expert to help her write the speech.

'It has to be five minutes of no beating around the bush. I feel extremely nervous but also very honoured to be representing my country at such a prestigious event.'

Back home for a fortnight, Shilpa has no time for her family. 'I had a calendar launch. Then I had to attend the Filmfare awards.'

Shilpa's wardrobe designers are going ballistic trying to keep up with their star-client's social schedules.

'Luckily I've two dear designer friends and they keep me well dressed wherever I go after 'Big Brother'. Neeta Lulla had done my dress for the event at the House of Commons, and Tarun Tahiliani designed my clothes for 'Big Brother'!

'Neeta and Tarun are being driven up the wall by my demands. I'm sure they dread my midnight calls from London, asking for a dress overnight. They must be fed up of couriering me clothes to London.'

Of course, once in a while Shilpa is persuaded to wear international designers.

'For an occasion in London, Vivien Westwood dressed me from head to toe. Otherwise, it's Neeta and Tarun all the way for me.'

Shilpa cracks up. 'The funny thing is, I went to London with two bags and came back with seven in just 50 days.'

Thanks to Shilpa, the image of the Bollywood heroine abroad has changed.

'That's true,' she conceded. 'Earlier they were seen as voluptuous. Now they look at me and wonder at how thin I am and how clued in I am to global fashion trends. I can discuss Armani as well as Tarun and Neeta.'

Winning Celebrity Big Brother really has turned life around for Shilpa Shetty. From being relegated to acting in duds directed by Deepak Tijori, the actor suddenly finds herself getting invited to the glitziest parties in town, the latest being Parmeshwar Godrej's bash for newly-weds Elizabeth Hurley and Arun Nayar. Now, the Shetty lass has been invited by Dr Vijay Mallya who is capitalising on her flavour-of-the-month status to launch the Kingfisher First Polo Classic match to be held at the Mahalaxmi Polo Grounds tomorrow.
Players Ahiraj Singh, Sanjay Kapur, Vishal Singh, Bashher Ali, Dhruvpal Godara, Manupal Godara, Angad Kalan and Uday Kalan will be seen in action. Fashion designer Anna Singh will also display her creations at this event. The guest list seems XXX-clusive and Dr Mallya's event is strictly for invitees only.
I was to cite the guest list but then heard the readers groan, "Don't you have anything better to write about?" So, I refrained.

Shilpa Shetty's Bollywood dreams seem fulfilled. She will star in a big-budget Broadway musical

Subhash K Jha

Having conquered the global audience with her brave stint on Big Brother, Shilpa Shetty is all set to star in an Indian musical. The musical will be on the lines of Andrew Lloyd Webber-A R Rahman's Bollywood Dreams that changed the destiny of pop-Bollywood culture globally.

Shilpa reveals, "It's going to be in an Indian musical on the lines of Bollywood Dreams. Although it will be 'Bollywood' in spirit, it will also cater to Western sensibilities. It's a hugely ambitious musical, and I'm very excited. I always wanted to do something on the lines of Moulin Rouge or Chicago. This is my chance."

The musical will be produced by Farhat Hussein, who organises all the big Bollywood concerts in Britain. Shilpa adds, "Farhat has ambitious ideas for the musical. And if all goes well, it will be the biggest staged extravaganza ever featuring someone from the Mumbai film industry. My schedules are being worked out. I plan to stage it for three months in England, and maybe then take it down to the US and Australia. Bollywood is so 'in' right now. Post-Big Brother, this entire ethnic culture has created such an intrigue all over the world. And Bollywood Dreams did very well many years ago. The appetite for Bollywood in the West has only increased now."

Shilpa is fast acquiring the reputation of being a spokesperson for racial discrimination and other important global issues. Commenting on her new projects, Shilpa says, "Oh, there are numerous projects on the anvil, including a film in British and Indian film from a very reputed company. For me, whether it's Hollywood or British films, they've to fit into my scheme of morality. I want to make money on my own terms."

Shilpa was in India last week to attend the Liz Hurley-Arun Nayar marriage. She adds, "When I got back to London, I was horrified when a journalist asked me if Liz Hurley tried to hitch me up with Imran Khan. It's such a frivolous question. Just because Imran is Jemima's ex and Liz is Hugh's ex, does it mean we'll come together? Sounds weird, doesn't it?"

Shilpa will be travelling back from London three times in the next month to finish shooting for Anurag Basu's Metro. "I couldn't finish the film because there were too many combination scenes with Kangana, Shiney Ahuja and Konkona. I'm not responsible for the film's delay. I'm proud of Metro," she says.

Right now Shilpa is incredibly excited about the Bollywood musical. "After Big Brother I was constantly asked about which films and endorsements I was doing. But I was looking at expanding my horizon by going to another level. This musical gives me a chance to do something I always wanted to do," adds Shilpa.

'Now I can't afford the luxury of introversion'

Meet Shilpa Shetty, the new orator in town

Subhash K Jha

The common cold that Shilpa is currently suffering from in London doesn't jell well with her uncommon performance for the Commonwealth Day on Monday.

Shilpa is upbeat. "Only four other participants were given a chance to give individual speeches. There was a woman, Anne, from Ireland, whose brother and sister had been shot. There were people whose trauma made a difference to global politics. Since I belong to the Commonwealth , issues that concern me, namely AIDS and racism, got a platform on Commonwealth Day. These are issues that I've become synonymous with. I come from a place where AIDS and discrimination often go hand-in-hand. So I was able to couple the two topics in two paragraphs. It was tough. But what was tougher was to give that speech in front of the Queen. I had to give the speech exactly the way it was written. But I added a line. And it was pretty well-accepted. So I am pretty proud of myself."

Shilpa confesses she's basically shy. "I completely clam up in front of outsiders. But now I can't afford the luxury of introversion. To stand on a global platform like the Commonwealth is not an easy task. There we were, dealing with serious issues like peace democracy, equality. And I had to conduct myself in a very responsible manner. But seeing the pride on the faces of the Indian community calmed me a little."

Kiss and Tell: Nasir Qazi on the
Richard Gere - Shilpa Shetty Kiss.

The clutter of pictures and recaps of Richard Gere pecking Shilpa Shetty are all across varied forms of media. We shall refrain from calling it a kiss simply because it is not one! We spoke to the man who witnessed the alleged crime scene unfold merely a couple of footsteps away. Nasir Walker Quazi was anchoring the Aids Awareness Campaign addressed to the truck owners, drivers and locals present on Sunday in the national capital Delhi.

The most obvious question was did Nasir anticipate this uproar when the incident happened? He recalls, "I did not think of this kind of reaction at all. In fact everybody considered it as an extension of the entertainment. For an hour before Shilpa took the stage we had Bhangra and Punjabi music playing."

What was he whispering in Richard's ear and what really happened? "Shilpa took the podium, spoke about the Aids awareness campaign and then stepped down to escort Richard Gere on to the stage. When he came he kissed her hand in an appreciative gesture as she was introducing him in Hindi. Richard had asked me before the show if I could translate whatever was said on stage to him in English, i was whispering the translation in his ear! And then of course he extended his warm gesture of goodbye and the peck followed. In fact it worked as a fun element."

He was seen whispering in Shilpa's ear as well just before the incident, "There are certain technical things to keep in mind, when you are on a stage with live audience before you. There is a tape change that occurs and consumes 10 seconds; they put on music to camouflagethe slilence. When Shilpa walked Gere to the dais there was a tape change and she was not aware of it. Hence I had to ask her to wait for ten seconds before she could say anything. That's all!", explains Nasir.

He opines that it is amusing to see how certain sections of the media reacting to the incident, "I found it so juvenile, all the burning and the protests. The truckers present there did not raise any eyebrows, so it's really sad! Everybody has missed out on the issue of Aids for which the campaign was held. Also the fact that Sunny Deol, who does not address any function, came in and addressed the truckers in Punjabi was quite a moving experience. He spoke so well and explained things so clearly: all of that is lost with this focus. The kiss overshadowed the cause."

Our reaction to the episode is that of letting a dog bark. However we do question ourselves whether it is fair for people of sovereign India to tolerate such mayhem and let fundamentalists burning effigies of the actors in protest of a frivolous peck on the cheek?
