Karan Johar's Dharma Productions is one of prominent film production houses in India. When people think of Dharma, they immediately think of some very popular films such as KUCH KUCH HOTA HAIN, KABHI KHUSHI KABHI GHAM, KAL HO NA HO, and YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI.
In 2012, when Karan Johar's directorial venture STUDENT OF THE YEAR released, he gave birth to three new stars: Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan, and Alia Bhatt. This Friday, Siddharth Malhotra's next film, with Dharma Production, releases: HASEE TOH PHASEE.
Other than this being the second film of Siddharth after the Hit STUDENT OF THE YEAR, another reason why this film is important is because his co-star Parineeti Chopra has been on a success streak, with ISHAQZAADE being a Super Hit and SHUDD DESI ROMANCE being a Hit. Also, this film is being co-produced by Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap, which adds to the importance.
At the end of last year, shockwaves were felt when Dharma's GORI TERE PYAR MEIN starring Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor bombed at the box office. HASEE TOH PHASEE is a similar type of film as GORI TERE PYAR MEIN (mainly genre-wise)...except that here, the stars are not even as big stars as Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor. Truth be told, I think that the box office fate of HASEE TOH PHASEE will be almost similar to that of GORI TERE PYAR MEIN. Because the problem is, it feels as if Dharma has been making the similar type of Hollywood style rom-coms since around the time I HATE LUV STORYS released. First there was I HATE LUV STORYS...then there was WE ARE FAMILY (not exactly a rom-com, but it had the same Hollywood style feel to it, and romantic and comedic portons thrown in as well)...then there was EK MAIN AUR EK TU...then there was STUDENT OF THE YEAR (although SOTY felt a bit different)...then GORI TERE PYAR MEIN...now HASEE TOH PHASEE. It is not that these films are bad, it's just that the same style of film is being repeated over and over and over again which bores the audience. Sure, GORI TERE PYAR MEIN starred two actors who are not going through a good phase box office wise, but I think that a main reason for the film bombing was due to the style of film now seeming boring to the public.
HASEE TOH PHASEE carries that "seen that" vibe to it. The same Dharma rom-com. The same-style songs (Punjabi Wedding Song promo feels very similar to Radha from SOTY and some of the other songs give a old or lackluster vibe).
The opening of the film will not too strong as the film's buzz isn't very strong. Single screens will open very poorly, although multiplexes will be a lot better. The film should collect a decent total overall on day one due to the presence of Siddharth-Partineeti and because of brand Dharma.
The film's main audience is the multiplex audience, and because there seems to be lack of novelty in the film, I don't think the film will sustain for long. Parineet's character seems something different, but the rest of the film carries the "seen-that" vibe, hence why there is a lack in novelty.
Also, the much-awaited GUNDAY arrives next week, so the chances of HASEE TOH PHASEE sustaining at the box office for long are even more decreased.
