What is Jai's excuse for snatching kids

Was that not a heart wrenching scene. Why was he so cruel , what other blackmail was used that he had to be so distant, cold and heartbreaking

Isn't he powerful enuf to manage atleast keeping mother and kids together. This is such a letdown
