Chapter 7
Making It Official
Later that day in the evening, Zoya was over at a friends when Angad knocked on the door at exactly 7. He was also very punctual, she learned. She fixed her hair and dress one last time before opening the door.
When she opened the door, there he stood, dressed in a navy blue dress shirt tucked into his dark jeans. She had a sudden urge to reach over and run her hands through his perfectly arranged and gelled jet black hair. His eyes once again, were the liquidy warm chocolate brown -those very same eyes that would turn to a frightening cool dark coffee colour at times.
He smiled gently and grabbed her hand, squeezing it in his.
'You look beautiful.' He said pressing his lips against her cheek. She closed her eyes and felt her lips curve up in a smile, leaning into his touch, the feeling of peace and happiness spreading through her body. Pulling away, she rubbed his stubble jokingly and laughed.
'You need a shave.' And walked out the door, letting him close it.
'Where do you work?' Kripa asked him when they had gotten into his car.
'I'm a bouncer at a club.' He replied putting the car in gear. She looked over at him and decided she wasn't surprised. The built body, cool and indifferent attitude were all attributes of a good bouncer.
She was brought out of her thoughts when he stepped on the brake and she found herself staring at an apartments complex. He stepped out and she followed him. He pulled out a card and swiped at the door before pulling it open. She looked at him questioningly as he held the door open for her.
'This is my apartment complex. I live here. But so does a friend who's party this is.'
Kripa glanced around in awe. The reception was sleek and well designed with expensive marble floors and a royal red carpet leading to the hallway where apartments began. She hadn't noticed that Angad had walked all the way to the elevators until he came back and gently took her hand, pulling her along.
'Do bouncers really get paid this well?' Kripa gasped as they entered the mirrored elevator.
'The wage isn't too bad.. Definitely better than an average wage that you'd get working at some retail store. And you also have to be good at planning financially and I happen to do just fine when it comes to planning my finances.'
He continued to surprise her, Kripa thought. He appeared to be very organized and also seemed to have planned his life very well as well. She, on the other hand, took every day as it came as if it was a new journey.
When they had found the apartment they were looking for, Angad knocked on the cherry wooden door. Loud music boomed from inside and she highly doubted anybody heard the knock until the door was finally opened by the same girl that despised her for a reason unknown, Simar. Her eyes flashed as she caught sight of Kripa but her demeanour changed when she looked at Angad. Her face lit up and she gave him a wide smile, reaching for his arm and pulling him in. Kripa quietly trailed behind, closing the door.
She found the apartment to be quite spacious with it completely carpeted. The living room fit at least 10 people with chocolate brown leather couches placed properly, all facing the large plasma TV. On the other side of the apartment was a crowded kitchen that had cool granite dark counter tops. She suddenly found herself imagining how Angad's apartment looked.
This time, she ignored the trays of the white substances laying on various tables and surfaces instead of reacting. When she looked up for Angad again, he was talking to Simar and laughing at something she had said to him. She felt an unexpected surge of anger towards both of them. Finally, she walked over to them.
Before she could say anything to Angad, the green eyed man she'd seen on so many occasions walked over and took him along with him.
Simar then turned to her and shook her head at her, a sympathetic smile plastered on her face.
'You'll never be able to deal with Angad and his lifestyle, Kripa. There's more to it than just what meets the eye. He may seem perfect now but he's anything but, trust me. He has demons of his own that he can't fight and you won't be able to either. I'm warning you now. Save yourself while you can.' She said. Although Kripa knew that Simar could care less about her, she seemed genuine and was only telling her the truth. Fear coursed through her veins and she turned away from the cold smirking girl in front of her.
A while later, Angad reappeared and pulled her into his arms.
'What's wrong? Aren't you having fun?' He muttered into her hair.
She mumbled incoherently pushing her face into his chest and sighed. This was home for her.
He chuckled quietly in response and pulled her away to look at her face.
'Who's the guy you were with? The one with green eyes?' She asked him playing with the buttons on his shirt.
'Oh, that was my friend. Alexander Romanov. Anyway, come. Let's get you a drink.'
He grabbed her hand and took her over to the alcohol. Just then, someone walked over and put an arm around Angad's shoulder.
'Angad! Thanks for coming man!' He exclaimed with a wide smile. He had light brown wild curly hair and and a freckled face.
'Kripa, this is Josh Kapoor. Josh, this is Kripa, my girlfriend.' Angad said motioning between Kripa and his friend. 'He's the one who threw the party.'
'Ah. Nice to meet you.' Kripa said taking the hand he was offering. She bristled when he tightened his hand in hers and smiled deviously. 'Um, my hand..'
'It's a pleasure to meet you, Kripa. How did you land yourself someone so beautiful, Angad?' Josh laughed, holding her hand tightly still.
It took a moment but Angad finally realized how uncomfortable she looked and stepped forward putting a hand over Josh's hand that gripped Kripa's in a death hold.
'Let her hand go, Josh.' He said through clenched teeth.
Josh smirked in response, clenching Kripa's hand. She gasped, feeling the blood flow to her hand stop.
'Josh, I mean it.' Angad hissed stepping up close to the smirking man until they were nose to nose.
'Oh come on Angad. You didn't have a problem with sharing your previous girlfriends.' Josh sneered to Kripa's dismay. She glanced over at Angad who visibly paled.
'She's different.' He snapped in reply, his chocolate brown eyes turning to the eerie dark coffee colour, demonstrating how angry he really was.
'Is she? How different? Have you told her everything?' Josh asked him, raising an eyebrow at him. Kripa watched Angad gulp and begin to get slightly nervous. Before she knew it, her hand was pried from Josh's and Angad was dragging her out of the apartment.
She rubbed her hand trying to bring blood circulation back into it, glancing up at Angad once in a while. A moment later, she found herself in an apartment a couple doors down.
It was almost identical to Josh's but much more quiet and organized. There was a nice burgundy coffee table placed in the small living room with a matching couch and a love seat surrounding it, facing a TV. The kitchen seemed very homely and much used with the dark cupboards and scratched yet polished marble counter tops. She found it slightly difficult to digest how Angad managed to afford it all but tried to focus on the matter on hand.
'What was Josh talking about?' She demanded, crossing her arms across her chest. Angad rolled his eyes, pinching the bridge of his nose.
'It doesn't matter. He just likes to say shit to rile me up.'
'It clearly does matter seeing how affected you are!' She snapped. 'What does sharing other girlfriends mean?'
'I've never had a stable, monogamous relationship before. That's what it means.' He growled walking over to the counter, his back facing her.
'Have you dated Simar?' She squeaked out. Although it shouldn't bother her if he did, she was sure it would. Either way, it was important for her to know to understand why Simar treated her in such a hostile manner.
She heard him turn around to face and held her breath, waiting for her his reply.
'Yes. I did.' He replied. Her head snapped up to his expressionless face. 'But, it didn't work out between us. I never felt anything for her. She was, is and will always be just a friend to me.' His voice ringed with finality, effectively ending the conversation.
'Angad, are you telling me everything about yourself?' She asked him quietly as he walked over to his sink and poured himself a glass of water.
'Of course, I am! What the hell does that mean?' He yelled slamming the glass down on the counter, his eyes darkening. She cringed, taking a step back instinctively.
'I just.. you feel so closed off sometimes.' She whispered, feeling her eyes well up with unshed tears. A moment later, she felt his gentle hands on her cheeks and looked up into a pair of warm chocolate brown eyes this time.
'I was adopted.' He said softly. 'After my biological parents passed away in a car crash, I was placed into foster care when I was I think 4. I was constantly moved from one family to another.. until I was adopted by my parents. Let's just say that.. before I was adopted, I had some very unpleasant experiences with my previous foster families. That's it, Kripa. I promise.'
Kripa felt her heart break for him. She caressed his cheek, laying her forehead against his.
'I'm so sorry, Angad.'
He leaned forward and pressed his lips to hers.
'You've come to mean so much to me.' He whispered. She closed her eyes, feeling her eyes fill up again. She felt her lips curve up into a content smile. That was something she had never heard from her own family. Knowing she was important to someone, was a feeling she'd never known before.
Reaching up, she pulled him to her again. A moan slipped from Angad's lips. Taking that as a green signal, she stepped closer to him and put her arms around his neck, nuzzling it. He tightened his arms around her waist and turned his face to press a kiss to her cheek.
'You know, I've never mentioned this before, but I really like how you smell.' Kripa exclaimed suddenly pulling her face out of his neck to look at him. Angad raised an eyebrow at her amused. 'What? It's true! It's like.. a mixture of coffee and.. something. A very musky scent. I like it.' Angad laughed in response causing her to join in.
'You're adorable sometimes.' He grinned. She giggled pushing him backwards towards the hallway and into a random room she assumed was his. Screw all the doubts and questions she had about him. Screw the fears, and him. Literally.
