Chapter 5
A Bond Of Friendship
'I'll write on the fundraising event my friend's sorority is doing..' Kripa said picking up her bag and walking out the door, bidding goodbye to the rest of the students involved with the school paper.
When she entered her dorm room, Zoya was studying for an exam.
'Hey listen, I'm writing on the bake sale. Can I help with it?' She asked sitting down on her own bed cross legged.
'Yeah, totally! We always need volunteers.' Zoya replied popping a grape in her mouth.
'And it would be okay if Angad also helped?'
Zoya looked up from her textbook with a grin on her face causing Kripa to blush.
'Aw, you want your lover boy to be there as well. Completely understandable.'
Kripa rolled her eyes and pulled out her phone.
I'm volunteering for a bake sale Zoya's sorority is organizing. You wanna join?
A couple minutes later, her phone's screen lit up and Angad had replied.
I'd join you for anything. ;)
Kripa laughed as she typed her response to his text message.
Tomorrow, lunch. At Mac Hall. XD
'If you're done texting your boo, can you grab me some food please?' Zoya laughed. She pulled out a $10 bill and handed it over to Kripa. 'Timmies. Get me a panini and a small candy cane white hot chocolate.'
Kripa quickly pulled on a jacket and a scarf. As she was zipping her snow shoes, she got a text from Asad.
Asad: What are you doing right now?
Kripa: Going to Timmies. Gotta grab some food for Zoya. Wanna come with?
Asad: I'll meet you downstairs in 5.
Kripa: Kay.
Once she replied, she turned to Zoya.
'I might be slightly late. Asad's going along.'
Zoya merely nodded, flipping through her notes. Kripa shook her head, closing the door behind her quietly.
A couple minutes later, she was walking to Mac Hall with Asad.
'I learned today.. that Angad Khanna is Adam Winters' best friend.' Asad said kicking snow out of the way.
'Should that matter?' Kripa asked him.
'I'm not sure. I don't know Angad Khanna much. But I do know of Adam Winters. He's been to jail a couple times.. I don't know what he was charged with but the fact that he has a criminal record is enough for me to warn you.'
'I'm sure Angad has nothing to do with whatever Adam does..' Kripa muttered, suddenly apprehensive about Angad Khanna.
She wasn't going to admit it to Asad but she suddenly, wasn't too sure of Angad.

At lunch, she saw Angad standing near Subway at Mac Hall his arms crossed, staring off into space. Like always, he was wearing a dark coloured shirt, black today, with a black leather jacket on top. He seemed to be allergic to smiling and colours, she thought as she approached him.
'Hey'
He looked at her, startled out of his world.
'Oh hey' He said, pulling her in for a quick hug.
'Let's go.' She mumbled lacing his fingers with hers.
'You know, I don't usually do this whole bake sale stuff..' He snickered when she handed him a tray of cupcakes. 'I distribute slightly different stuff..'
Kripa paused her counting of the cupcakes momentarily.
'What kind?' She asked, trying to act nonchalant about it. When he didn't reply, she looked up and found him smirking.
He held up the tray and rolled his tongue in his cheek.
'I'll be back when these cupcakes are all gone.'
With that, he walked away, without even a second glance. Sighing, she pulled out her phone and took pictures of the cupcakes and cookies for the article. When the batch of cookies she was responsible for were all sold, she sat down and jotted down notes to write the article.

Volunteers pitched in
'And Angad Khanna spent his lunch time selling 60 cupcakes. That's worth adding in too. I don't exactly do fundraisers.'
Kripa's head snapped up in surprise and she smiled at him, shaking her head. He grinned back, taking a seat beside her.
'What's that for?'
'I'm writing an article on the bake sale for the school newspaper.'
'Ah. You write for the newspaper too.. I didn't know that.' He said raising his eyebrows in surprise.
'Well, I do.'
Just as he was about to reply, the shrilling ring tone of his phone sounded. He pulled his phone out and answered. The conversation was oddly very vague and short, leaving Kripa extremely confused.
'I'll be there in about 30 minutes. I'll caution you, I don't have much... Okay, I'll be there. Bye.'
'Where are you going?' Kripa asked him as he stood up pulling out his car keys.
He tossed the car keys in his hand for a minute before replying. 'A friend's. You wanna come?'
She shrugged. 'Sure, I've got nothing else to do.'
He offered her his hand and she took it, picking up her notebook and pen. A couple minutes later, they were in Angad's car, driving to his friend's house.
'Have I met this friend?' Kripa asked him.
'No, you haven't.' He replied tapping his fingers on the steering wheel, waiting for the red light to turn green.
'I've heard some things about Adam..' She mumbled hesitatingly, risking a glance at his face which remained passive.
'Adam's made some mistakes in the past. He regrets them and he's getting himself on the right path. We're all helping him. He's focusing on school now, and we're all very happy for him.'
Kripa nodded, not sure what else to say to that. She was glad he was on the right path, whatever that meant. But it was also obvious that Angad didn't want to share the details with her either so she would respect that.
Very soon, Angad stopped the car in front of a massive house. The lights were all turned on from what was visible from the large window at front.
'I'll be right back. Just wait here.' Angad said leaving the car. Kripa sat back and sighed as she watched the time flash on the dashboard of the car. From 12:30, the time changed to 1:00 and she felt herself drift to sleep.
Suddenly, her phone vibrated and she jumped in her seat, jolting awake. She picked up the phone from her lap and saw a text from Asad.
What are you taking tomorrow for the family night? I was thinking of cheesecake..
Kripa slapped her forehead in annoyance. She had completely forgotten about the family night Asad's family was having tomorrow night. She had been going to these ever since she became friends with Asad. His family was hers just as much as his. He had the family she had wished for, and they loved her just as much. This was one night she looked forward to every month. The fact that it slipped from her mind this month, was a shock to her but she had been so preoccupied with Angad, that she'd been forgetting many things recently.
I dunno.. I think I'll bring cookies? Or cupcakes? One of those. =D
Just as she hit 'send', Angad opened the door and got in.
'Sorry, it took so long. I got distracted. Who were you texting?' He asked, leaning his arm over the seat to look back as he backed the car down the driveway.
'My best friend. His family is having a family night that I go to every month with him.. '
'His? I thought Zoya was your best friend..' He said confused.
'Zoya's a good friend. Asad Khan, is my best friend. I've known him since we were 7.'
'Asad Khan... is the same Asad Khan I'm thinking of?' He asked her glancing at her for a moment. She turned to look at him, confusion etched on her face. 'His dad is Rashid Khan, drives a taxi?'
'Yeah, that's him! How do you know him?' She asked, surprised. Asad didn't seem to know of Angad when he was talking about Adam with her.
'Hmm. He was a friend of a friends. I'm assuming he's the one you've heard some things about Adam from?' Angad muttered, hostility seeping into his voice.
'Well.. '
'Since 7 huh? That's almost 13 years..' He interrupted. 'You two must be close. Going to each other's family nights.'
Kripa bit her lip, slightly disturbed by his reaction.
'Does that bother you?' She asked him, her tone accusatory. He chuckled in response.
'Nope. I don't like that guy but if you're talking about your friendship with him, it doesn't bother me. It's your life.' He told her, grinning. She rolled her eyes.
'I never know when you're joking.. or when you're serious.' She said, causing him to laugh again.
'I'm not the kind for humour, Kripa.' He looked over at her and gently grasped her hand from her lap, and kissed it. 'But I can try.'
She blushed and smiled at him, watching his eyes turn from a dark coffee to light brown chocolate. He was getting under her skin as much as she didn't want him to and it wasn't a good thing. Why, she wasn't sure but she had a bad feeling about him, and this relationship.
