Republic day is to honour the date of the Constitution of Indian coming into being. The constitution that replaced the Government of India Act of 1935 on January 26th, 1950.

The Constitution bill was passed on November 26th 1949 but was not declared until January 26th 1950 that then also established the democracy in India. After India gained independence on August 15th 1947, there was no fixed constitutional law. A Drafting Committee was set on August 28th 1947 to form constitutional laws so India has its freedom from the British set Indian Act of 1935. So, while India gained independence from the British Raaj on August 15th, 1947, it is often said that Republic Day marks the Constitution being implemented.

The celebrations in India happen for three consecutive days. It is an announced Public holiday. The main celebrations take place in the Rajpath, New Delhi in front of the president. A grand parade is what the day starts with near the Rashtrapati Bhavan (President's residence), after which the President places the flower wreath on the Amar Jawan Jyoti, in a memorial remembrance of the soldiers who died serving the country. Following this is the two minute silence.
To end the celebrations of Republic Day, the Beating Retreat Ceremony is performed in which Mahatama Ghandi's favourite hymn is remembered, the forces servants sing the National Anthem and ends with "Saare Jahaan Se Acha."

Here's hoping a great and peaceful Republic Day, to all the Indians on India-Forums.
