14jan Experience vs Debutant Scream and Shout: Fair or unfair: Best Debut Awards Experience vs DebutantAward season is here again and everyone is excited to watch grand award shows, great performances, men in sexy suits and women in beautiful dresses. Nominations are made, voting starts and then the winners list comes out. There I noticed something at one of the winners list and I wondered, how can an experienced actor who has worked for over 11 years, won a National Award, be nominated in the category of Best Debut and win it?

Before I continue, let me establish the following: What is a debut? According to the dictionary it means:
A first public appearance on a stage, on television, etc...the beginning of a career...

The last few years, we have seen a few actors from the South make their Hindi debut. These experienced actors have worked in films for several years. The odd thing is that, after their outstanding debut', they receive a nomination in the category of Best Debut. How and Why? Note: This isn't their first film; it's just their first Hindi film.

For example, in 2012 Ileana D'Cruz made her Hindi debut with Barfi!. It was a fantastic performance no doubt, but she has been acting since 2006. So can we really call that performance a debut performance, if we take a look at the definition written above?

Still, she got nominated in the category of Best Debut, where she was pitted against rank newcomers like Alia Bhatt, Diana Penty, Huma Qureshi and Yami Gautam. D'Cruz won each and every award for Best Debut Female.

For the 2013 awards, this scenario is being repeated but this time it is Dhanush, a national award winner. This actor, with over more than 11 years of experience, made his foray into Hindi films last year with Raanjhanaa.

The fact that an actor with his experience even gets a nomination in the category of Best Debut, with actors like Sushant Singh Rajput, Amit Sadh, Girish Kumar and Siddhant Kapoor, is unbelievable. That he wins, is insane.

If this is continued, newcomers won't stand a chance. They can make an outstanding debut all they want, but they can forget about winning the trophy for Best Debut when in that same year an experienced actor from South decides to make his or her Hindi debut.

Is it really fair to do this to newcomers who, according to the definition of debut, really made a debut? Is it really fair towards the actors from the South, because how much are you valued as an actor when you are put in the category of Best Debut, even after winning a National Award?

What do you think? Is it fair to nominate an experienced actor against rank newcomers? Or should they be nominated in the Best Actor and Actress category?

I completely agree with every word of this article😆 Its not only ironic to nominate a National Award winner for Best Debut but its also unfair to the other newcomers to be pitted against such an established actor..Dhanush was the soul of Ranjhanna and his performance was infact among the best last year..Its on par with Farhan's performance IMO..But to give him the best debut award is a joke😆 Main reason why poor Anu kept moping around when Asin won the best debut..Asin played the exact same character in the original and won Filmfare Best Actress..Then she plays the same role in Hindi and wins best debut against an Anushka who probably faced the camera for the first time when she got selected for RNBDJ..Am not sure how they can deal with this problem though😆

Somehow i feel the same..dhanush should b the best actor not new comer..he did a fantastic job but already a well known actor so his comparison should b with actor like farhan i BMB..they should give encouragement to new talent..its somehow unfair to both experienced and new comers..

i found it unfair at first when Asin won over anushka
coming to dhanush

he was fab in Rajhnaa. Farhan and Ranveer were strongest competitors for best actor.I don't think he would have got it. I just wanted him to win something for Rajhnaa.
i'm happy for him

There is no reason to be sad
Manish won one, sushant won one, every one has already won🥳

Be happy😊

Haha..Egalitarian society😆 The point is its disrespectful to Dhanush too😆 If Meryl Streep acts in a Bollywood movie tomorrow, will they give her the best debut too?😆

I agree with most of the article, worst one was when Asin won all the awards and not Anushka who was brilliant for an actual debut!

Good article. Lots of people said the same thing yesterday on twitter. It was the topic of debate at my home too. 😆 While I agree that Dhanush performed brilliantly, and that too in a language he did not know, somewhere it does strike as extremely odd for an actor of his calibre to be nominated with newcomers. Then again, Dhanush deserved some recognition for his debut too, and that in a way that the best debutant amongst the other newcomers also gets fair recognition and is encouraged.

How to deal with this situation? We can't have a special category for 'actors from different regions making their Hindi film debut' bcos very few actors make that transition and plus, it would be just odd to make that category. And a tie wouldn't be fair- it would be disrespectful to someone as experienced and popular as Dhanush. Even though I'm a Sushant fan, I wouldn't have liked a tie just so that he could have an award.

If I was the organiser of the award show and had to find a middle route, I would not have nominated Dhanush amongst newcomers, but rather invited him on stage to give away the best newcomer trophy (with a lavish introduction for this 'newcomer who is technically not a newcomer'- full of praises about Dhanush for the wonderful transition he made from one industry to another). When the newcomer awards are done with, the hosts could have requested someone else to present another award to Dhanush- preferably a senior actor like Mr. Bacchan. So basically, two newcomer awards, but NOT exactly a TIE wala situation as Dhanush would have given away the second newcomer award- thus emphasizing his seniority and respecting his stature and experience.

if they hadn't given it to him,he would not get anything for Ranjhnaa
i cannot see him winning over Farhan or RS

i agree he is a fabulous actor
but i think this award is more a welcome to the Hindi film industry rather than the acting world

as far as national awards, even saif won it😆
Wow,WAAAW!!!😛

I completely agree with this article! Not only is it disrespectful towards the actor concerned, but is very unfair to the other nominees.

I feel the debut category should only include actors who are rank newcomers.Actors, who make their first Hindi film debut, should be nominated in the best actor category.Or maybe, they can be given a special award to honour them.In that way, he is being acknowledged and honoured for his first Hindi film debut+ it is fair to the actual debutants.
