Welcome to PB forum. 😃 Sorry for such a late reply 😳
Thanks for your comment, truly anybody who has read Shriman Yogi ends up reading it a number of times, so many here have said the same.

By the way I am curious have you read the English translation of Shriman Yogi?

The extract is wonderful - the ironic reference to smallness more than makes it clear just what a towering personality Shivaji Maharaj is, even outside Maharashtra.

Just yesterday, i got a crash course on his biography from my son's history book. His fascination for forts and the way he used them as strongholds while expanding his empire and befuddling the enemy is incredible. It's true that there are few parallels if any of kings who started from scratch and left an unsurpassed legacy in India.

The details about the books given here are really helpful for every novice who wants to catch up on Maratha history. But i also look forward to more posts from you and the discussions therein to learn about the same.

Thanks so much for the post and really sorry for the delay.

Hi Radhika. Wonderful post, truly there is no comparison for Shivaji Maharaj when to comes to building an empire from scratch.

Visiting his forts is such a humbling experience. One marvels at those magnificent men who climbed up or down those forts carrying such heavy weapons, either on foot or horseback and THEN fight. There is a small museum below Raigad fort and they have displayed some of the weapons there. The talwars/swords are so heavy how they used them and fought!

Shivaji Maharaj used to say that after climbing Raigad no enemy will have the energy to fight. To think this Raigad was taken by Mugals due to betrayal by Suryaji PIsal
😔

Hope you can read atleast Shriman Yogi. Sorry for even delayed reply and where have you disappeared to?!

@Bold..
Never think like this. Just try to dig deep and more deep. Read whatever you can get from anywhere. I am saygin this as, at least this is what i do to reach as close to reality as possible. Even a different language does not proves to be a hindrance to me. Lol { Maddy knows this well.}

😃😃😃 True! Abhay reminded me of JA days. Was it Persian documents you had got hold of and I think Jodah had helped in translation.

Coming to the movie. I liked the movie. There were lot of things in it which were good, along with some shortcomings. Did not like that Pinga song at all. Really awkward. Unwanted !

You know Nana Patekar was upset about the Malhari song too. He had blasted about taking such creative liberties and I believe had asked if somebody makes a movie on Shivaji Maharaj will he be made to sing too!

I hope the rumors of Alladin Khilji in dream sequence with Padmini/Padmavati is FALSE!

{If you have read the reviews then you must be knowing that } the movie was mostly criticized by " established / formal critics " for showing the Peshwa as "love sick and drunkard" but i really had no objection with that. Actually, there is a strange aversion to love among our present day intelligentsia / intellectuals. Same happened during JA. They find it tough to believe that these people can love someone.

It is clearly on record so much change came in him at the end of his life. Movie did not even show a fraction of that "change" which is on record else there would have been a brawl !!

In my latest blog about Peshwa and Nasir i have mentioned he was under depression and suffered from bursts of anger towards the end of his life due to separation with Mastani. The link is given in the forum. Please see my thread. What Bhansali did here was merely an adaptation of this particular segment of history.

It is on record that till the end he looked forward to Mastani. Chatrapati Shahu was against separating Mastani from Bajirao. And, in the end, even Chimaji was of opinion that Mastani should be sent to Bajirao. Anyway. It will come later in show and we will discuss it there. :)

What i would have loved to see more in the movie was his OWN personal side. He was completely unorthodox. A man who promoted his soldiers purely on merit not by caste etc considerations. Various other issues are there. Due to these things he became so much unpopular among his own community that they boycotted him.

Very very few people know that there was a "spitting revolt" against this fighting Peshwa till very very recently. His being born a Brahmin proved to be his biggest enemy in the present day caste politics. He was "made" to be forgotten. Else, just think why was a movie required to make us remember that there was an undefeated military genius in 18th century. He is literally called the destroyer of Mughal Empire, especially in Pakistani school of thought !

I wrote what i thought. Hope did not miss anything.
To sum up i liked the movie, overall. :D

- Abhay

Abhay, I remember my grandmother telling stories about Bajirao's valor in our childhood, Mastani's beauty is talked about and also he building a Mastani Mahal for her.

What is sad is that it required a movie for people to become aware of his true contribution of India.

I sometimes wonder - none of the Peshwas/Ballal family - being Bramhins did not marry more than once. So was this also a very sore point not just who Mastani was?

I have read about only one wife of Balaji(Radhabai), Nanasaheb(Gopika), Madhavrao(Rama), Raghoba(Anandi) etc. Don't remember about Chimnaji but I think he also had only one wife.

Maddy,

There were many people who helped me in translation, from IF itself. I remember, Tamy used to help a lot in Persian to English translation. Infact, i wrote a blog about Mosque of Mariam Uz Zamani Begum at Lahore. The Persian to English translation of the inscriptions on that mosque walls was given to me by Tamy. :)

And, here you are present to give me Marathi translations. Hence i said, a different language also proves no hindrance to me. Lol.

Nana Patekar is among those few celebrities, who makes no bones in calling a spade a spade. No nonsensical nature and straight talk. To the point. Crisp and short. Just admire this down to earth man. What he said was correct to a great extent.

I do hope Bhansali does not distorts "history" of Rani Padmini. There is a limit to creative liberty. BTW, you must heard the arguments put forward by some great historians, that there was no Padmini in reality and all that is myth created a fictional novel Padmavat! You must have followed that drama which continued on TV shows after that event of manhandling Mr. Bhansali.

So, let us read this too.

In Rajasthan, Rani Padmini is considered next to Goddess of chastity. She is almost "worshipped" , there are shrines present inside the Fort of Chittor, where tributes are paid to her, for last few centuries !

My grandfather used to tell me about Prithviraj Chauhan when i was young. This came in my mind when you mentioned your childhood memories of Bajirao.

All the Peshwas had one wife only from what i remember in faint memory. Only Bajirao is known to have Kashibai and Mastani. This could also be a sore point as you say.

I agree completely. It is unfortunate that we need movies and other media to make ourselves aware of these great men of past! But then, who is to be blamed ? I guess, our curriculum, our books, which do not do justice.

@Bajirao movie: Knowing SLB's itihaas šŸ˜† I had decided to stay well away from Bajirao Mastani. Seeing Kashi - Mastani dance a pinga 😊 & then the Malhari song😊 & hearing RS speaking in that very weird manner 😊 which I guess was SLB's & his understanding of a Marathi Brahmin accent...I was glad I stayed awayšŸ˜› Once bitten, twice shy _/\_

@Rani Padmini: IMHO it is immaterial whether Padmini was real or not. She is revered by many TODAY. That is what matters. Just like Radha, a fictitious character who got so popular that there is hardly a Krishna mandir where she isnt present. Even if we assume for the sake of argument that Padmini was fiction, even then you should not BS about her in the name of creative liberty. If all you want to show are scantily clad women dancing in fancy palaces when they aren't fighting half naked men with their tresses flying why not just make a historical fiction show like Game of Thrones. There you can put in all your modern values of feminism, secularism, etc. These people use popular names from History to grab eyeballs & then murder the same characters citing creative liberty. Alauddin Khilji was well known for his liking of little boys. Why not show that?

@Maddy: I am watching Ch. Shivaji on Star Pravah. It is such a nice show. I loved how they kickstarted the series, showcasing the talents & skills from various parts of Maharashtra before the Rajyaabhishek. Mrinal Kulkarni is divine as Jijabai. She is a timeless beauty I love how the show concentrates on the important events & doesn't waste time on unnecessary fiction. A lesson for everyone who makes historicals. Who needs fiction when reality is so interesting! I am especially glad there is no romance shown between Jijabai - Shahaji OR Shivaji & his wives. What little is shown, its all very dignified & limited. So excited for the next episodes. Thanks once again for letting me know about the show otherwise I would have missed it once again

The mention of the show above made me recollect the poem which they are using in its title track. Sharing the poem along with its English translation. Also check out the title track of the show which I am sharing below. Music has no language!

The poem is written by Kavi Bhushan & it was read during the coronation of Shivaji.

Indra jimi jambha par,
badav su-ambha par,
ravana sadambha par raghu-kul-raj hai;

(Like Lord Indra against the demons,
Like underwater volcanic fire over the ocean
Like Lord Ram of the Raghu clan against boastful Ravana,)

paun baribaha par,
Sambhu rati-nath par,
jyaun sahasrabahu par ram dwijaraj hai;

(As strong wind scatters the clouds of rain
As Lord Shiva destroyed Rati's husband(kaamdev),
and like Parshurama destroyed Sahastraarjuna -)

dava drum-danda par,
cheeta mrig-jhunda par,
bhusan vitunda par jaise mrigraj hai;

(Like fire which burns woods,
and a cheetah on a herd of deer ,
Like lion on hogs,
so says Bhushan (the poet))

tej tam ansa par,
kanha jimi kansa par,
tyon malechchha-vansha par Sher Shivaraj hai!!!

(Like a ray of light in darkness,
Like boy Krishna upon kansa,
So has descended King Shivaji ,the Tiger.
upon the clan of mlencchas(barbarians))
