More films fewer Fridays

Zanjeer-Shudh Desi Romance and Grand Masti-John Day to compete with each other on same Fridays.

Films producers are fighting for an open window in a crowded 2013 calendar. One of the dates in contention is September 6.

Ram Charan's Bollywood debut, Zanjeerhad booked that Friday, months earlier, as had Indra Kumar and Ashok Thakeria forGrand Masti. But unanticipated announcements from Anjum Rizvi's John Day and YRF's

Shuddh Desi Romance queered up the pitch for both producers.

Thakeria has pushed his Masti sequel to September 13. "Now, we will not only get better screen space, but the date also gives us sufficient time for our post-production," he reasons.

John Day has also shifted to the following Friday. Says Rizvi, one of the producers, "When Shuddha Desi Romance shifted to September 6, we did not want the week to get too crowded so decided to move to September 13." On competition from the Masti franchise he retorts, "Both the films belong to different genres, we can co-exist."

Grand Masti's producer-director Indra Kumar echoes the same sentiments, "Ours is an adult sex comedy, their film is more serious. If good, both will do well. I'm enthused by the response I've been getting. Besides, 13 is my lucky number." Apoorva Lakhia, director of
Zanjeer, however, is sticking to his original date undaunted by his YRF rival. "These days it is impossible to get a solo release so we will go with what is in our control," he asserts.

Meanwhile, director Manish Sharma, writer Jaideep Sahni and actors Sushant Singh Rajput, Parineeti Chopra and Vaani Kapoor suddenly find themselves in a tizzy as an invite for a red carpet premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11 has resulted in the release date of their film, Shuddh Desi Romance, being preponed by a week. Acknowledging this Rafiq Gangjee, vice-president, marketing & communications, YRF says, "Given that it is crucial to have our artistes here and actively involved with the pre-release marketing we chose to prepone our release."
