Dear Pallavi,
After all this heat and not much light, apart from this post of yours, I would like to strike a lighter note. It seems to be badly needed!
For me, whether I approve or not depends on only one thing - the back that is offered for viewing. Archana specialised in them long before her
maanaseeka putri adopted them, and she had a very nice back, so it did not matter to me and I am sure the very limited number of male viewers of PR ogled her happily.
On Purvi, it is ok, as her back is neat, though not up to Archana's standards. But her ghastly horsehair wigs corner all the attention, and the backless blouse is effectively wasted. Plus, she was and is always wardrobe deprived, whether it was the salwar suits she used to wear dozens of times then, or the two backless blouses she alternates now, with a splendid disregard for the sari colour or design. Archana always had matching blouses, with or without backs.
But in one another of the 3 serials I used to watch, BALH, the leading lady's back was anything but attractive, and yet she insisted on imposing the dismal sight on us. It is the same with ladies who have more than the ideal amount of avoirdupois, the excess being neatly distributed in symmetrical tires of flesh in the lower back. On them. a backless blouse is a pain for the eyes.
It is the same with jeans. They look gorgeous on the likes of Deepika Padukone, but very different on ladies with substantial derrieres. That, of course, is the problem with fashions: they seem to drive commonsense out of the nearest window.
- Who ties the string for you and who hooks up the narrow band at the bottom? If you have a handy spouse, then all is well, but for single women, it must be tough, involving twisting themselves into knots. Of course Archana, in one episode where she got her hands burnt, nonetheless appeared decked out in her regulation backless blouse, and no, Manav was not at hand to help out. Maybe, like the gadgets in Mrs. Weasley's kitchen (Harry Potter, for Muggles in this forum), her blouses fastened themselves!
- I am sure the tailor charges more for a backless blouse than for a backed (sic) one. Fashion has to be expensive to justify itself. What I am curious about is what the tailor does with the cutout pieces.
- Lastly, I devoutly hope the old, blouseless fashion does not resurface😉. If it did, I am sure hordes of women would rush to adopt it, and that would be a bit too much for old fogies like me to take, even solely on grounds of aesthetics!

are not an immoral piece of clothing...😆
Purvi's backless blouses are not immoral but a recent fashion trend in Kolkata..😳
Its been the trend in last 4-5 yrs in Kolkata. Ladies get such blouses tailored with fancy cutout designs in the back and on the sleeves. Many of my lady friends (all respectable, married ladies😆) did get such blouses tailored and wear them to Pujas, functions and parties.
Its the IN thing now...in fact one of my friends got a blouse tailored, exactly like Purvi's, with the tassle at the neck and hooks fastening down below.
This trend in backless blouses amongst Bengali ladies has been influenced by the huge Marwari/ Rajasthani community in Kolkata. Their Chaniya choli is completely backless with only strings attaching the 2 sides throughout. Fancy cutouts on sleeves are also inspired from Choli style.
Many tribal women in Rajasthan and Gujrat wear those completely backless blouses attached only by strings, that is the Choli style. Its a traditional thing in many states so adapted by latest fashion designers across the country including Kolkata.
And Purvi's style of wearing saris is also common in Bengal, especially in traditional homes and in villages. My late Saas used to wear it that style at home, our grandmas, grand-aunts all wore sari that style at home and even outside. Its called the Gharoa style in Bengali which means "Homely" style.
Nowadays many fashionable ladies and girls wear benarasi or kantha saris Gharoa style to weddings and religious functions. Many traditional fashions are coming back into vogue like the gharoa style and choli style blouses.
I hope Purvi's dressing confusion is cleared now...😃
