"PURVI! I found out the information!" Ovi yelled as she ran into the locker room, colliding with Purvi. Purvi grabbed on to her open locker for support and grabbed Ovi's hand to prevent her from falling.
"Woha, you're a little too excited aren't you?" Purvi spoke with a smile.
"Romil just asked me out last period!" Ovi squealed like a fan girl.
Purvi's jaw dropped and then turned into a grin. She was genuinely happy for Ovi. She remembered when both of them had minor feelings for Onir, causing them to drift and bicker often. However, she was extremely glad that they both realized that they deserve better than Onir. Then why are you still with him? Purvi asked herself. She pushed all thoughts about Onir and congratulated Ovi. As she cleaned up all her dance clothes that she had laid down on the ground, she begged Ovi to move on to the 'gang' news.
"Oh right! Okay, so their leader is like Arun or Arjun Kirloskar and he's not that good looking, so I wouldn't go for him if I were you ' it would kill your rep." Ovi said matter-of-factly as she flipped some of her hair behind her.
"He IS good looking!" Purvi protested. "and I don't care about my rep!"
"So, you're with Onir because?" Ovi asked in her shrill voice.
"That's not the point!" Purvi exclaimed, attempting to divert the subject. "Did you find out the name of the gang perhaps?"
"They're on the down low. It's probably something stupid like Arjun and Gang," Ovi began as she did her signature eye roll. "but it's like they're not even a real gang! Just a better version of the police department in Darbhanga' they protect the innocent people basically."
"Then that's not so bad right? I mean they're helping people, they're not out there shooting innocent people and kidnapping people and raping women right? So what's wrong with that?" Purvi said with hesitance, trying to convince herself that her new friends were GOOD.
"I guess so." Ovi said with a shrug. "Just stay out of trouble Deshmukh."
As Ovi was walking away, Purvi grabbed on to her wrist. "I should stay out of trouble? Where were YOU at practice today? I covered for you."
Ovi's eyes went wide and she jumped over and hugged Purvi tightly. "I so owe you one, thank you!"
"So where were you, hmmm?" Purvi asked. "Frolicking with Romil?"
Ovi playfully hit her shoulder as her face turned pink. "Shut up!"
////////////////////////////////
This had to be the first time Purvi woke up early on a Saturday. She couldn't sleep all night ' daydreams of being at the carnival. Purvi could hear the noise her parents were making downstairs and she closed her eyes, being brought back to the other day when she called it off with Onir.
"Hey babe, when should I pick you up for the carnival? Be sure to wear something cute." Onir slurred as he winked over at Purvi.
Purvi tried her best to control herself from gaging. "Let's go to a different carnival! February 30, 2013."
"There's never a February 30'"
"Just like how there's never going to be an 'us' again."
"Excuse me?"
"I'm tired of you. You're disgusting, you're a jerk, and I can't believe I let you touch me, call me names, or even let you near me!"
"Are you dumping me?"
"YES! Do you understand the message or do I have to spell it out for you!"
Onir grabbed Purvi's wrist. "Don't you dare walk out on me." Onir said through gritted teeth.
"Watch me!" Purvi exclaimed as she used her free hand to slap him, making him let go of her other hand.
Purvi smiled sadly to herself. She was glad that she was done with Onir and everything was over with, but she had no idea how to tell her parents about it. They adored Onir, they already accepted him as a son-in-law, and they were already talking about wedding plans.
Purvi pushed all the negative thoughts aside and focused on the positive ones. As she went downstairs, she was careful to avoid her parents. That was, until she bumped into her mom on the way to the kitchen.
"Purvi! Are you not eating breakfast with us?" her mom gasped. She put her hand to her forehead, checking her temperature.
"I'm just not feeling that well' so I'm resting up for the carnival." Purvi said in a low voice that almost sounded like a whisper.
"Aw, you still love Onir like it's the first day you fell for him!" Purvi's mother gushed, causing Purvi to reenact Ovi's famous eye roll. "There's tons of other festivals you can go to though. Dance is out of season, so you don't have to go and promote."
"NO!" Purvi yelled causing her mother to give her a weird look. "I mean' this is important! We have uh' pen pals coming' from our sister school.. and I have to meet mine!" Purvi chirped. Nice save. Purvi praised herself.
"Oh, that sounds like fun! I remember when I had to do that! They still do that in college? I did it when I was in elementary school! You know my pen pal'" Purvi ended up zoning out her mother who was in going through a reminiscing stage. She knew that this was going to be a long 12 hours. Can the 7 AM on the clock just change to 7 PM? Purvi asked herself when she already knew the answer to the question.
////////////////////////
By the time the clock read 7 PM, Purvi was already dolled up and ready. She wore a black salwar kameez that had gold embroidery. This was her favorite salwar that she owned because neither her parents, nor Onir liked it. However, she had hoped that Teju and Arjun would like it. Especially Arjun. Purvi applied a coat of mascara and a sparkly champagne colored lip gloss to compliment the gold. She left her hair down and wavy (A/N: like in the Zee 20th's party where Asha looked like a fairy ^.^). She completed the outfit with a brown and black pair of sandals. As Purvi looked in the mirror, she wasn't satisfied with what she saw, but she shrugged her shoulders and accepted it.
As she said her goodbyes to her parents, she ran to the school due to the fact that she had lied and said Onir was giving her a ride. When Purvi finally reached the school field where the carnival was being held, she put her hand to her forehead and felt moisture. Purvi quickly digged into her bag and pulled out a small, compact-sized perfume bottle and did a few spritzes on herself. She mentally yelled at herself for not setting up a specific meet-up spot with Arjun and Teju as she began to walk and find them.
She saw a girl with her hair up in a ponytail standing alone against the bottle toss counter. Purvi slyly made her way over and passed by the girl nonchalantly to check whether or not that the girl was Teju.
"Purvi!"
Score. Purvi turned around and wasn't surprised to see Teju standing in front of her. "Teju!"
"What happened to you?" Teju asked trying to hold in her laughter.
"Do I look that bad? Let's just say that I didn't have a ride." Purvi said as she tried to perfect her hair.
"No' you just look different from your innocent baby look." Teju chuckled as she pinched one of Purvi's cheeks.
Purvi slapped Teju's arm away as she laughed. "Where's Arjun?"
Teju noticed how big Purvi's eyes would get when she talked about or mentioned Arjun causing Teju to smile. "We split ways to make it easier to look for you."
"Tej, were you even looking?!" Purvi asked with uncontrollable laughter.
"Well, I figured lover boy over there would find you eventually." Teju said as she laughed, her laughs getting louder and louder as the noise of their surroundings began to grow noisier and noisier.
Purvi was getting tired of the noise even though she only just got there. She waited with Teju for Arjun to come due to the fact that Teju apparently told him that she would end her 'search' over at the bottle toss counter.
As Purvi heard firecrackers going off, she closed her eyes shut in hopes that they would go away.
"What are you doing?" a voice asked Purvi, his sweet laughter filling the air.
Purvi opened her eyes and was surprised to see Arjun standing in front of her. "You!"
"Yes' me?" Arjun asked in a confused tone.
"Why do you always get to make a grand entrance?" Purvi wailed with a pout.
Instead of getting an answer from Arjun, Purvi noticed Teju walking away.
"Teju where are you going?" Purvi yelled out to her. Instead she got no reply. "What's her deal?" She asked to Arjun.
"She doesn't like haddas or haddis," Arjun said with a smile.
Purvi was confused by what Arjun meant, but kept her mouth shut. She looked over to the group of guys and girls dancing near the DJ's stage in disgust.
"So' this is what your school is like huh? Typical college?" Arjun asked, addressing the group of dancers other students smoking and drinking in various corners of the field.
Purvi flushed with embarrassment. "I'm really sorry' I didn't think it would be like this'"
"It's fine. At least this is safer than a carnival with shootings and knives," Arjun said in reference to Darbhanga.
Purvi giggled. "Okay, we're at a carnival and we're not doing anything," Purvi began. "Let's go to the test your strength thing!"
Arjun couldn't resist Purvi's inner 5-year-old coming out, so he agreed and held her hand as they walked. Purvi looked down at their hands intertwined and held on tighter in fear of losing him. This didn't feel real to Purvi. Whenever she was with Arjun, nothing felt real.
"Step right up! Test your strength and win a prize, how wonderful," said the guy in charge of the attraction with no enthusiasm.
Arjun grabbed the hammer and slammed it down as hard as he could. Unsurprisingly, he reached the highest level of strength on the meter which let him pick the biggest prize.
"Which one do you want?" Arjun asked, interrupting Purvi's thoughts.
"Huh? Oh no, you won it, this is your prize, you pick!" Purvi encouraged. She felt as if being with Arjun was prize enough, but she couldn't say that now could she?
Arjun smirked at Purvi and turned to the person in charge of the game. "I want the big teddy bear."
Purvi giggled at how much of a kid Arjun sounded like. As the guy handed Arjun the teddy bear, he took it and handed it to Purvi.
"What's this?"
"It's yours!"
"But you won it!"
"It's okay. I didn't like any of the prizes."
"Not even this teddy bear?" Purvi gasped as she held on to it tighter.
Arjun chuckled. "That's exactly why I want you to have it!" he said as he motioned to the way Purvi had a strong grip on the stuffed animal.
Purvi blushed and whispered a soft "thank you."
"Now, what do YOU want to do?"
"No, you're the guest. You pick!"
"We could do this all night if you want."
"Ugh, just pick something!"
"You're a bit sassy aren't you?"
"Flattering me will get you nowhere."
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
After hours of bickering, eating, and sass, Purvi found herself sitting next to Arjun on the ferris wheel.
"We're pretty high'" Arjun began, looking at me concerned.
"So?"
"Are you sure this is safe'"
"What do you mean?"
"If this was in Darbhanga'"
Before Arjun could continue, I placed my hand over his mouth. "This isn't Darbhanga. We're completely safe!"
Arjun forced a smile and looked out the window. A feeling of fear washed over him ' he was scared for Purvi. Being this close with Purvi just didn't seem right. All Arjun could think about was worst-case scenarios such as someone from Darbhanga threatening Purvi to get revenge on him. Out of impulse, Arjun grabbed on to Purvi's hand and gave it a tight squeeze.
"Arjun?" Purvi asked with a giggle.
"Hmmm?"
"Are you okay...?"
"It's just. . . I'm feeling uneasy. . . like something's going to happen."
The pair got off the ferris wheel and started walking towards a bench. As they walked, they continued their conversation.
"I'm sure nothing is going to happen. After all, there's feisty Teju over there to save us if that happens," she said with such confidence ' Teju's influence clearly rubbing off on her.
"Mmm' Teju can protect herself, I can protect myself, but who's gonna protect your dainty, fragile little self hmmm?" he asked, trying to bring himself into a better mood and shake off his wariness.
Purvi's face flushed red. "I know how to kick!"
Arjun chuckled. "Okay, you'll kick if someone comes to attack us."
After Purvi's giggling subsided, she took a good look at Arjun which landed her into an intense eyelock.
"Purvi, it's not too late too late to run back to Onir and be that good girl your parents wanted!" her mind shouted at her.
She pushed all of her mind's suggestions aside while Arjun broke the eyelock.
"Hey look, your classmates stopped being seductive on the dance floor," Arjun chuckled as he nudged his head towards the dance floor where the DJ was playing a slow song.
Dil kyun yeh mera shor kare. . .
"I think it's safe to finally go on the dance floor," Purvi said with a giggle, hinting that she wanted to dance with him.
"With all the preps?" Arjun questioned.
"Come on, they're not THAT bad' after all, you're friends with me, right?" Purvi asked, the word 'friends' hurting them both.
Arjun mumbled a 'fine' and put out his hand which Purvi's hand naturally found its way to.
Soon enough, Arjun's stern smile turned into a wide grin as he twirled his dance partner around. They both lost touch with reality and focused only on each other. Arjun and Purvi's worries and concerns vanished into the air as their bodies moved in sync with each other.
Teju's loud clapping scared the two out of their trance. "Purvi, you are bringing the best out of this boy, first you got him to NICE and now he's dancing?"
Purvi flushed. "He's always been nice'"
"Not until he met you," Teju challenged.
"We just met the other week ago! No one can change in a week!" Purvi protested while defending Arjun.
The trio started walking, playing games, and enjoying themselves. Purvi hadn't felt that happy in years, she didn't even know if this was all real or not. Everything was happening so fast ' Purvi meeting Arjun, developing feelings, getting close to him and his gang ' she felt like this was all wrong, but it felt so right to just be next to Arjun and his friends ' people that liked her just the way she was.
"Earth to Purvi," Arjun said as he waved his hand in front of Purvi's face, interrupting her thoughts.
"Oh' sorry. I was just thinking about something," Purvi said with a forced smile. She found herself clutching on to her teddy bear from Arjun even tighter than before.
"You sure?" Arjun asked with a gentle and concerned tone, making Purvi's stomach fill with butterflies.
"Yeah' I was just thinking about how close we've gotten over the past few days,"
"Are you okay with that?"
"Of course' why wouldn't I be?"
"Well, you've been holding on to that teddy bear pretty tightly..."
Purvi gave a slight smile as she loosened her grip on the teddy.
"Are you not cold?" Arjun asked, changing the subject.
"Er' I'm fine," Purvi lied as she stopped rubbing her arms for warmth.
As Arjun was about to take off his jacket, Purvi stopped him. "No, no! It's fine' I can't keep stealing your jackets' I still have that leather one at home!"
"It's fine! I have lots of jackets at home."
"But I still feel bad. I took up the gas on your motorcycle, I took your jacket, I took your teddy bear, now I'm going to take another jacket from you?"
"Purvi' it's fine! You worry way too much," Arjun said as he grabbed on to her shoulders making Purvi shudder from his warm touch.
"Hey guys' I'm still here," Teju pepped in, breaking Arjun and Purvi's "love fest".
"Sorry," both Arjun and Purvi mumbled.
"I'm sorry for being a haddi," Teju began with a mischievous grin. "but I think we've gone through every attraction here."
"I know'" Purvi trailed off as she saw Romil and Ovi walking together, hand in hand.
Arjun followed Purvi's eyes and took hold of her hand. Purvi looked up at him and he returned her curious gaze with a tight squeeze of their hands and a smile. Purvi's cheeks were already pink just from being close to Arjun, this hand hold made Purvi's butterflies turn into somersaults.
"Arjun, can I talk to you?" Teju asked in an alert and worried tone. Arjun nodded and hesitantly let go of his hold on Purvi. Purvi watched as they went off into a corner and discussed something.
When they returned, Purvi quickly diverted her gaze to one of the attractions.
"Sorry about that'" Arjun apologized sincerely, instantly bringing a smile back on Purvi's face.
"Okay, so I think it's time we all go home," Teju suggested.
"What? But it's only been a couple hours," Purvi protested, getting teary-eyed like a little child who didn't get the video game or doll they wanted.
"Yeah, but remember your last social gathering' you ended up alcohol soaked in Darbhanga' and let's not have that happen again," Arjun said in a stern tone.
However, a sound of a gunshot interrupted Purvi's tantrum and Arjun & Teju's persuading. In fact, it interrupted the whole celebration.
