Dear Tanyaz/Afss,
I do not know what is this BW forum, but what I do know is that after Shahrukh Khan in the 1990s, no one else has made the crossover from TV to the big screen as spectacularly as Sushant has done. The noted film critic, Subhash Jha, is a good friend of mine, and he is categoric about Sushant being the biggest thing going in the post-Ranbir Kapoor generation of actors. Here is what he had to say about Sushant's debut performance:
As for Sushant Singh Rajput, the script favours his character. And he repays the compliment right back, with bonus. With his compelling screen presence and an ability to render restless energy in a restrained pattern, Sushant immediately establishes himself as one of the most articulate actors of the post-Ranbir Kapoor generation. We can say about Sushant that a star is born without the risk of having to eat our words later on. His relationship with the cricketing prodigy Ali(Digvijay Deshmukh) is in many ways the core issue of the multifarious plot. You cheer for Ishaan's streetwise heroism in a way you haven't cheered in a long while.
Subhash Jha is generally sparing with his praise, so this is really an encomium. The other reviews to have been equally good. Sushant made the right move at the right time, and that itself indicates a praiseworthy sense of timing. That he did it without antagonising Ekta Kapoor shows his diplomatic skills. We should all be delighted for him. And for ourselves, as a wonderful new find for films is something to cheer about !
Tanyaz, I too think Ankita should not come back, whatever the pay packet offered. One the other hand, it is also true that there is no way Asha or anyone else can compensate for her absence, in sheer glamour and in terms of performance. I am sure a large chunk of her very large fan base will leave with her. Not a bad thing, if it hastens PR's demise!
Shyamala
Shyamala Aunty,
Thank you for sharing the review on Sushant. I can only say I am delighted and kind of knew that he would carve a way for himself, on the basis of sheer talent. This boy started out in another Ekta show where he played a side role of the brother of the lead. He had little scope to act, but as the show grew on, Ekta possibly realized his potential and started giving him some intense scenes and he did full justice even if it was a 2 minute scene. Then came Pavitra rishta. And we all know how succesful he was here, and almost half of the success of the show is credited to him and Ankita Lokhande. Viewers watch irrespective of the humbug story line simply for these two. :P But they had a far reach where all age groups connected to their characters and from old to young loved them alike. Rithvik-Asha have a certain pull for the show too, but they are mainly popular among very young college school/college going kids so their reach is not as far, but that is also because of the modern characters they are given.
However, back to Sushant, I have read some of his interviews and the thing I love about him apart from being a superb actor, is his humility. Sometimes during Jhalak Dikhla Jaa where he and Ankita were both participants, I found her a little arrogant ( which comes with the success and praise she has seen) but he remained very humble with the judges, the co-participants and his dance partner. He has that grounding intact. In an cutthroat place like Bollywood, sometimes it is a breath of fresh air to have actors irrespective of the peak of success they see, to have this basic grounding intact. I hope sushant maintains it forever. I have nothing personal with him but as a viewer of this show for 3 long years, I am supremely happy for his success. I do wish him lots more of such praise and success for all his years in B-town. :)
As for Ankita being replaces, it is a tough job. But hiten tejwani did replace sushant and the show went on, and Hiten is a fabulous actor too ( I wish they had given him a bold no-nonsense businessman character like he was playing in his popular soap Kutumb at one point. I liked him so much in that show, playing an aggressive guy but yet vulnerable in love, but never foolish). So it may be tough, but with time, this eternal show will move on. But yes, the actress had a tremendous screen presence and her looks were not matched by any of the younger actresses that came in, so I guess it will be difficult to match her on that count and her talent ofcourse. But, it might be a good change to see a new Archana, and one that plays her character and age by dressing appropriately for a nani-ma and looking in sync with Hiten Tejwani. Poor Ankita always looked a little younger to him, maybe it was the actual age gap or prob the very yougn look she sported. Either way, I wish her success too and hope she achieves the same fame Sushant has. But yes, in attitude, I find him more deserving.
