MALAD CITY HOSPITAL
"Purvi, kab ghar jaogi?" asked Munni. Munni packed her belongings into a a black, leather bag. "Tumhari aai jag jayegi."
Purvi was alone in the hospital with her college friend, Munni and her trainer, Dr. Ashok Kumar. The dim lights made her eyes droop. The ceiling fun spun slowly, barely providing any relief. With the exception of a ten year-old checked I for malaria and a couple ward boys, the hospital was empty.
"Aaji subhe saat baje jag ayegi. Tab tak me mera pending kam pathake jath hu." she responded scribing away hospital reports. Dr. Ashok Kumar slept in the corner of the room with his hands crossed.
"Make sure ki budda jag na jaye." winked Munni and left.
Purvi smiled and shook her head. Suddenly, the ward boys shouted, "Doctor sahib! Purvi ma'm! Patient aya! Bahut hi critical hai!" Purvi arose from her chair rushed to the patient.
The right corner of his lips was torn and blood gushed down the side of his jaw. He has an indigo bruise developing on his hairline. He had blood shot eyes. A pricey pinstripe suit covered his limp body. Purvi put her index and middle finger at the nape of his neck to measure his pulse. He has a very slow beat.
"Usko bed me bitalo aur gown penado. Me abhi athi hu." Purvi rushed to gather needles, thread, a bag of glucose, ice bag, cotton, and bandages. She returned and carefully began cleaning the blood dripping down his jaw. She sewed up the gash and placed the ice on his bruise. Lastly, she attached him to the glucose machine. In the midst of this process, she was struck by his beauty, his serenity. "Just like an angel" she thought.
"Uska naam kya hain?" Purvi asked the ward boy.
"Purvi ma'm, yeh iss sher ke sabse bade waqeel hai. Arjun Kirloskar." he replied.
The name wasn't familiar, though she had lived in Mumbai her entire life.
"Acha, tum ja sakte ho." she dismissed him.
"Good night, mera matlab, good morning m'am" he said tipping his hat.
Purvi sat by Arjun's bedside until 6:00 am, when he opened his eyes. For a few moments, everything appeared like a blur. It took him a while focus. He titled his head and was greeted to the face of a princess. Startled, Purvi rose from her steel chair and introduced herself.
"Hi, I'm Dr. Karanjkar." she said extending her hand.
Arjun grasped her wrist instead and drew Purvi closer towards him. "Kiss me," he whispered.
Purvi felt an inherent magnetism towards him. His eyes pierced her soul and his warmth enveloped her. She drew closer and pecked the corner of his mouth where the stitches began. Purvi, flustered, retracted from his grip. She was as bright as a tomato. Arjun smiled and shut his eyes.
"Bye." she parted and scurried home.

KARANJKAR CHAWL
"Arjun Kirloskar" the name was still on her lips as she made her aaji's breakfast.
"Purvi?" Sulochana called, burdened by bags of groceries.
"Aaji!" Purvi scolded, grabbing the bhajis out of her hands, "Nashta tayar hain."
"Meri ladli poti," she pinched Purvi's cheeks, "ab tu soja."
"Acha, par tumhari BP aur HC ki godiya time pe leh lena." Purvi grinned.
As Purvi made her way to the bedroom, her aaj reminded, "Ha. Aur theen baje ladke wale ane hain. Tumhe dekhne ke liye."
Purvi sighed and nodded her head. As much as she loved her aaj, she felt her only motive in life was to marry her off and have great grandchildren. Purvi, however, complied. She was forever indebted to Sulochana.
"Arjun Kirloskar'" she thought, dozing off into a dream.
PURVI'S DREAM
Purvi stood atop the 150 feet building in downtown Mumbai. She peered over the ledge and was overwhelmed by the speeding cars, bustling people, street vendors; the clangor of city life. She set a foot forward, ready to jump into it all, when two hands pulled her waist back. She turned to find herself locked in Arjun's embrace. He moved her bangs away from her eyes and leaned in to kiss her.
"Mr. Kirloskar?" she pushed herself away in shock.
"Mrs. Kirloskar?" he smirked and buried his nose in the nape of her neck.
A tingling sensation ran down her spine and she could feel Goosebumps rise. He pupils were dilated and her mouth was tense. She stood in utter confusion.

KARANJKAR CHAWL
"Ago bai! Purvi, ladke wale ane wale hain." Sulochana shook Purvi furiously.
"Kya?" Purvi woke, rubbing drool away.
"Ab fresh ho ja. Maine chai bana li." Sulochana reprimanded and walked away.
Half an hour later, the boy and his parents arrived. Namastes were exchanged and Sulochana engaged in pleasant conversation with her possible samdhis. All seemed to be going smoothly until Sulochana picked on Purvi's lack of conversation.
"Purvi, kyun na tum Karan ke saath angan me ja kar bat karlo? Aaj kal ke bach bade se bhi sharmate hain." Sulochana joked.
Purvi and Karan walked to the front porch and shared a good minute of silence before Karan attempted to alleviate the awkwardness.
"So' your aaji said you're trying to be a doctor'" he stated.
"Yes'very difficult profession'" Purvi improvised, "and you?"
"Engineer." he smiled.
"Oh. Must be fun." Purvi conceded, unensthusiatically.
"Listen Purvi, my parents may have not brought this up but'"
"Kya?" she seemed annoyed.
"We know you are Manglik. And I am not. I can't go through with this marriage. My life is at risk." he explained.
Purvi broke out in uncontrollable laughter.
"So it's off!" she clapped in joy and winked.
Karan pushed his glasses up and fumed, "Bye, Purvi Karanjkar!"
