Chapter 33: Dil Kyun Yeh Mera
July 10^th, 2012: Deshmukh Residence, 8:30 p.m.
Manav: Archana, it will be okay. You and Purvi need to stop worrying!
Archana: But both Sachin and Soham went out looking for her and found nothing!
Manav: Archana, Arjun's still out there. We'll inform the police if he comes back empty-handed too.
Riya: Haan, Aunty. Just keep calm for a while okay?
Archana: *through sniffles* I don't even know if that will be possible. How's Purvi doing?
Teju: She went to sleep in her room last I checked. She had given up on crying.
Archana: Kunjal, why don't you go stay with her in case she wakes up?
Kunjal: Theek hain, Aunty. *gets up and leaves*
*half an hour later*
Archana: Manav, it's been half an hour. Arjun still isn't back yet. I think—
Manav: Like I said, we'll wait until he comes back.
Soham: Baba, you know how you said that we would inform the police if Arjun came back empty handed?
Manav: Haan… why?
Soham: Well, what if he came back carrying Seher? You know how ironic that would be?
Sachin: Hey! This isn't the time for joking around!
Soham: I'm not! I'm just stating the obvious! Why don't you all look over in the doorway?
And sure enough, there was Arjun, carrying a perfectly unscathed Seher.
Archana: Seher! *gets up and runs towards Arjun* Arjun? Tumne Seher ko kahan se mili?
Arjun: Uhm, Aunty voh—
Seher: Aunty, mein bahar gayi khelne ke liye. Tum log bhi na? You all forgot to search the obvious places!
Archana: Kya?
Seher: I'm not lying I swear! Ask Arjun!
Archana: Arjun, is this true?
Arjun: Uhm, haan.
-Arjun: That was such a lie.
Arjun: I found her right down the road at a friend's house.
Seher: Haan! She even told someone that I was going over there!
-Arjun: Seher! Stop it right now! Stop lying!
Archana: She didn't tell me anything. Did she tell anyone else?
Group response: No…no… nope.
Archana: Toh phir?
Arjun: She must've forgot to tell someone! Or she told the wrong person!
-Arjun: Arjun! Stop this madness now! Stop lying!
Arjun: I mean, we were all scared for you there Seher. Next time, tell Archana Aunty or someone else to be sure. Don't rely on anyone else, okay?
Seher: *nods her head*
Archana: Haan! Don't ever do this again to me Seher, okay? You know how worried sick Purvi was?
Seher: *faint gasp* R—really?
Archana: Haan, beta.
Seher: I'm tired…
-Arjun: Riiight. This is my cue.
Arjun: Uhm, I'll take her up to her room. You all can relax now.
Manav: Haan, chalo Archana.
Arjun: *takes Seher upstairs*
*another half hour later*
Arjun: Night, Seher.
Seher: Night.
Arjun: *closes door and turns out* Oh! *bumps into Purvi*
Purvi: She's—she's asleep?
Arjun: Uh—ye—yeah.
Purvi: Oh. *turns to walk away*
Arjun: Wait! Uhm, Purvi… uh.
Purvi: *shaky voice* Don't start that again please.
Arjun: And how did you know that that was what I was going to ask you?
Purvi: We both know where you found Seher.
Arjun: Purvi… if you know then—
Purvi: Don't start this again, Arjun. *bitter voice*
Arjun: But why? Why in your right mind are you doing this? That all I'm asking!
Purvi: And all I'm asking is that you leave me alone. Please.
Arjun: So you won't listen to me.
Purvi: N—no.
Arjun: Well then, see you later. *walks off*
-Purvi: Trust me, Arjun. I wish that I could tell you. I wish that I could tell you and listen to you. I wish I had the courage you did. But some things, are better left unexplained.

*downstairs*
Riya: Arjun! Arjun!
Arjun: *jumps* What?
Riya: I've been trying to get your attention for 5 minutes! What are you thinking about?
Arjun: Nothing.
Riya: You seem tired. Let's go home?
Arjun: Uhm, yeah. Sure.
-Arjun: I was tired. I was tired of this little game that Purvi's playing with me. If she won't tell me anything, then I'll have to figure it out myself.
Anyways, it's been a pretty eventful night.
And hopefully I'll make the best of this.

July 10^th, 2012: Kirloskar Residence, 1:00 a.m.
*ring ring*
DK: Okay, Riya. What is it this time?
Riya: Arre! Nothing, Dad. It's just—
DK: Why did you say nothing if you were going to go on?
Riya: Daaad! Let me finish! So I just got back from Manav Uncle's again, and—
DK: What happened today?
Riya: Dad! Let me finish! *explains everything about Seher and Arjun going out to find her and how Arjun seemed lost again* What is going on dad? I gave you specifics this time, so you better tell me!
DK: How would I know!? I'm not in Arjun's head! Anyways, Riya, I know you're giving it time. I can see that clearly. But maybe…
Riya: Maybe?
DK: Maybe you should give Arjun space. Maybe everything that's on his mind will explain itself sooner than you think.
Riya: What is that supposed to mean?
DK: You'll find out na? Just stop… stressing over him. Give him room.
Riya: Dad, has Arjun talked to you?
DK: Not in the last week, no. But like I said, just give him space. Maybe you'll have your answer sooner if you stop thinking about it.
Riya: Okay…. *mildly confused*
DK: Oh, and remember! We'll be arriving hopefully the day before the marriage if not earlier.
Riya: We?
DK: Well, let's just say I'm bringing along one extra person.
Riya: Who?
DK: That's a surprise for everyone.
Riya: Thanks dad. Now I have this to think about—
DK: Ah! No thinking. Just go enjoy the wedding ceremonies, okay?
Riya: Right. Space. Don't think about it. Got it. See you soon dad.
DK: You too, Riya.

Night of the Party
Ranvir: *walking up to Arjun* It's really peaceful out here na? On the terrace?
Arjun: *with a scowl* What do you want?
Ranvir: We've already discussed this, actually. Yaad hain na? Yesterday…?
Arjun: *irritated* No.
*long pause*
Ranvir: Didn't you say that she was your friend?
Arjun:*annoyed* Haan.
Ranvir: Then why are you so worried? I can take care of her too. You're not the only one.
Arjun:*now angry* Just stay away from her.
Ranvir: *sly smile* That's kind of hard, considering we're getting married.
Arjun: *turns towards Ranvir angrily* Stay within your limits. *walks away*

July 11^th, 2012: In the Car, 8:30 p.m.
Purvi: Where are you taking me.
Ranvir: Oh, so that was a command?
Purvi: I command you to tell me where you're taking me.
Ranvir: Oh, don't worry about that. I'll have you back home before the party is over.
Purvi: Ranvir, I don't have time for games. Just tell me where we're going.
Ranvir: Look. Your parents trust me to take you on one drive, then why are you so tense?
Purvi: They don't know anything.
Ranvir: Oh! That's why you're being edgy. Do you even know the real me?
Purvi: After everything, I don't think I want to know.
Ranvir: *stops car* You know that making me angry isn't a good thing.
Purvi: Exactly. Why'd you stop the car?
Ranvir: No reason.
Purvi: Well, don't we have anywhere to go? You know, the place where you won't tell me about?
Ranvir: No. I don't think so. *scoots closer to Purvi*
Purvi: What are you doing?
Ranvir: Nothing. *scoots closer*
Purvi: Ranvir! Stay within your limits!
Ranvir: *still scooting closer* It's funny how you use the same dialogues as your friend there.
Purvi: Well that's because he's a good person.
Ranvir: Oh, so now I'm the bad one?
Purvi: You were always the bad one. *turns to open the door*
Ranvir: *grabs her hand* Where are you going?
Purvi: As far away from you as I can possibly get!
Ranvir: Well that's not happening anytime soon. *pulls Purvi back into the car*
Purvi: Ranvir! Let go of my hand!
Ranvir: *starts laughing at her failed attempts to free herself*
Purvi: *grabs a pen with her free hand and stabs Ranvir's wrist, causing him to scream out in pain and let go. Purvi then takes off running from the car*
Ranvir: Hey! Get back here!
Purvi: *keeps running, and running and running*
-Purvi: Don't look back Purvi. Don't look back. Somewhere along the way I felt myself crying, but I didn't stop. Soon after I could feel the blisters and cuts in my feet get to me and my lungs running short of breath. I didn't even have my inhaler with me. But that didn't stop me. I would much rather be broken and at home then with that horrid person of a man. I wasn't going to stop myself from running. And so I kept running. I soon felt confident enough to stop a taxi to take me home. I slowly, painfully but slowly got my breath back. And soon, after what may have been hours, I got home. But the thing is, the party was still on. But that doesn't mean everyone was participating.
Purvi: *after the taxi left* Arjun!
Arjun: *jumps and turns* Wha—
-Arjun: I didn't have time to finish my sentence. Not after what Purvi did next. I expected her to yell at me for not being inside with everyone else. The thing is, I didn't really have a thing for parties. But no, that was the complete opposite of what she did. Instead, in my mid-sentence, she ran up to me and… well hugged me. She started crying almost immediately.
Arjun: Purvi… what happened? Shh—Purvi calm down. What happened?
Purvi: *continues crying and refuses to let go of Arjun*
-Arjun: It wasn't before long that I realized she wasn't letting go soon. It was also not that long before I realized that I had my arms around her too. I noticed the way that even though she was crying, she still had that calm look she always had on. I noticed the way her hair didn't seem messed up despite the wind outside. I noticed that she looked amazing in purple. Then, I felt that even though I didn't know what was going on, I was hurting too. Why? I have absolutely no clue. It was as though my heart was beating to a different rhythm. Wait—what? Stop it Arjun!
Did I really just think that?
