Chapter 7 - Change of Planes [Arjun, Karan, Purvi]

New Zealand - Tuesday

D.K. was upset that he had to come to New Zealand to settle this minor issue. He was making plans to accompany Purvi and Teju to London and to finally have this matter settled between Arjun and Purvi.

His son was hurting and he could not bear to see him in such pain. D.K. loved Ovi like a daughter and he was sad to see the ones he wanted to become one separate. He consoled himself with Aashana's beliefs 'you should marry the one you love - the feeling of love is what validates a marriage'

His son's happiness meant the world to him and he could not let Aashana down. D.K. called Arjun to give him an update on what was going on. Arjun picked up on the first ring.

London - Tuesday

"Dad, how have you been? I've been waiting for you to call. What's going on? When you are you guys coming? Does Purvi know I'm here? Waiting for her?" Arjun rapidly fired questions at D.K.

"Slow down, son." D.K. laughed. It was so good to hear Arjun so excited again. By listening to him, no one could doubt how in love his son was with Purvi. He was like a shaken bottle of champagne ready to pop. "No, she doesn't know you are there. The right time hasn't come up to mention it yet."

"Oh." Arjun said, sounding a little deflated.

"Not to worry son. Now you have enough time to create the perfect opportunity to sweep our Purvi off her feet."

Arjun brightened on hearing his father say 'our Purvi' for that meant D.K. had already made a place for her in heart. Those small words filled Arjun with immeasurable joy. "Dad, I'm so happy to hear you say that. I just love her so much and I know mum would have loved her too. She fits me, Dad, like my missing puzzle piece. I'm so lost without her."

D.K. was surprised at this confession from Arjun. "I never knew you were such a softie, Arjun. Purvi really has changed you, hasn't she?"

"Yes Dad. She changed me for the better."

"Good. Now, the reason I called, I had to come to New Zealand for a month to straighten out a mess here. After that we should be on our way there. Would that be enough time for you to get yourself organized?"

"Dad, I was ready three months and eight days ago. I can't wait to see you... and her. How is she?"

"She doesn't smile as much anymore and when she does it seems like it hurts. She puts up an act for everyone but if you look closely you can see that she wears her pain like a shield. She loves you though. Whenever your name is mentioned she looks as though she's seen a ghost and for a split second she wears a wistful smile as if sampling a precious memory. She's hurt Arjun and we need to make damn sure that we make up for all that we've put her through."

"I know Dad." Arjun sighed, "I will do my best to make sure she never feels one ounce of pain again."

"That's my boy! Ok we will see you in a month. Take care, son."

"Take care Dad. Miss you."

"Miss you too, beta."

Mumbai - Tuesday

"Thank you both for coming in to discuss Purvi's stay in London, Mr. and Mrs. Deshmukh" Karan began as he sat down in his office with Manav, Archana and Purvi.

"No, thank you for your consideration, Mr. Dhanjani. Not many bosses would extend such a courtesy." Archana said.

"No thanks needed. I am very well aware of Miss Deshmukh's position and I wanted to make sure we had all the details sorted out before our trip. Once we are settled there it would be a bit difficult for her to return to India within those six months and I wanted to assure you that your daughter would be in safe hands."

"Mr. Dhanjani has graciously given each of the team members two open tickets that we can give to our family members so they can visit us during that time. I would like you both to have them." said Purvi.

Manav and Archana both looked at Karan and extended their thanks again. "Our daughter Teju will also be accompanying Purvi on this trip I hope that's ok?" Manav continued "Actually a family friend, Mr. Divasagar Kirloskar, offered to chaperon the girls while they were in London. He had to go out of town unexpectedly and he does not get back to India until next month and I understand that your team will be mobile by Friday. I really would have wanted him to accompany the girls but I know how these things work. Time and tide waits for no man. I trust my girls and I know they can take care of themselves and each other. Would be a problem for D.K. to join you when he gets back?"

Karan smiled, "Not at all Mr. Deshmukh. I am actually familiar with both Mr. Kirloskar's - the senior and the junior." At the mention of Arjun's name Purvi's head came up sharply and she looked at Karan. He looked directly into her at a few seconds "Although we've never been formally introduced."

He turned back to Manav and slid a paper over to him, "We have made arrangements for the team to stay at these flats so we can have a sense of a home away from home." Manav looked at the address and smiled. He looked up into Karan's knowing eyes and Karan blinked as if to say 'you're welcome'.

Archana, who caught the exchange, had been observing Karan the entire time she was seated in his office. There was just something about him - something she couldn't put her finger on. He wasn't all that he appeared to be.

"Will you be staying with your team, Mr. Dhanjani?" Archana asked.

"Yes, Mrs. Deshmukh. We've already arranged the layout. Each apartment is a duplex and has two floors. Three of the team members will share one unit and your daughters will have one all to themselves on the fifth floor. I will have the apartment on the third floor. We have found this housing arrangement works best for our travelling teams than staying in hotels."

Archana deliberated over Karan's words and then asked, "Can you personally assure me that you will take care of my daughters while they are abroad? To make sure no harm comes to them and that they are properly looked after? And do you promise to contact us immediately if there are any problems at all?"

Purvi gasped and both she and Manav looked over at Archana. "Archana, how can you ask Purvi's boss such a thing?"

Karan looked at Archana levelly, "Mr. Deshmukh, it's quite alright. Mrs. Deshmukh has every right to ask these questions as their mother. In fact I would be very concerned if she didn't ask them but to answer your question, yes, I intend to take very good care of your daughters. I will consider them my personal responsibility until Mr. Kirloskar can get there and I promise to contact you in the case of any urgencies. Does that work for you both?"

Purvi looked down and blushed. Manav looked relieved. "Thank you for the confidence Mr. Dhanjani. I appreciate you taking up the responsibility of watching over my girls. D.K. will be there next month. Thank you again for taking the time to meet with us and to calm our fears about our girls going so far away from home. We'll let you get back to your work." Manav and Archana rose to leave.

"Thank you, sir." Purvi said shyly and rose to escort her parents out.

When they were waiting at the elevator, Archana said to Manav and Purvi, "One second, I think I left something in Mr. Dhanjani's office. I'll be right back."

"Ok aai."

Archana walked back to Karan's office and knocked on the door.

"Come in" Karan looked up from his laptop. "Ahh, Mrs. Deshmukh, what can I do for you?"

Archana came in and closed the door behind her. "I've noticed that you've taken quite an interest in my daughter Purvi, Mr. Dhanjani. I'm impressed. It would seem that you have left no stone unturned to make this trip as seamless as possible for us all and I just have to wonder what my Purvi means to you."

Karan rose from his desk and went to stand by the window. He looked at Archana, "You are quite a perceptive woman, Mrs. Deshmukh. I can see where Purvi gets her fire from. You should be proud of yourself, raising such wonderful girl on your own and making sure she was instilled with such good values in today's society. There's no need for you to worry. Purvi is a very integral part of my team and she has proved herself to be a very, very valuable asset for me. I promise you - on my honor - I will take very good care of your daughter. Do you have any other questions?"

Archana looked Karan in the eye, "Just one - Who are you really?"

Karan smiled a knowing smile, "Now I'm impressed. You are a very smart woman, Mrs. Deshmukh."

Dear Laurie,👏

First of all would commend u on the Tagore quote u added to the beginning of this entire thread! Wow!

Laurie, the title of this chapter too, Change of Planes...deeper meaning intended here I see...

DK as usual gayab for a month, living up to his true colors...

The mystery is intriguing...who is Karan? I do think Shyamala's guess has a lot to do with this and there is special reason to this name and relation...

Somehow, this time around the focus in this chapter has been on Karan and I felt Arjun kind of slipping into the background, you know how they fade one and then the other is stronger, in term of merging of scenes, felt kind of like that, the focus fading quite a bit from our Arjun to the shifting focus on Karan...and ACTION!!

Almost like two degrees, I mean floors of separation, between the girls fifth and Karan's third floor...hmmm...

Laurie, thank u for making Archana so sharp and talented instead of just having a sacrificial crying role, that really makes a difference...I have no guesses as of now, but now I cannot wait to find out...more about Karan, the truth, and especially since you say he is a young Hrithik Roshan, looks wise...😉

Ok seriously, I am having a heart attack, and am sooo impatient to see what happens next!!! I mean of course I will wait to see whatever you have up your sleeve but I am at the edge of my seat and am looking forward to the eventual Purvi Arjun confrontation, but I am even more intrigued by Karan...I am also even more in love with him, I don't really know how that's possible but I am! 😊 This story is just amazing!

Excellent Chapter Laurie, story is moving forward nicely. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
If you continue like this.. the following is likely to happen one day.
Hellooo..Can I speak to Ms. Laurie please.. This is Laurie.. may I know who this is.. I am PR CVs calling from Balaji Films, Mumbai..We are stuck, not able to move the story and we are going in circles. You seem to have better grip on ARVI track, can you help us? ARVIans seem to enjoy your story more than the PR show. Let us have a joint venture.. what do you say?
btw -- I love your Karan character, sounds more charming than Arjun. Arjun & DK's convo is not that appealing compared to Karan, Manav, Archana & Purvi convo. There is something fishy about the London apartment.. looking forward to your next chapter.

Laurie,

About the (red) line, I could not agree with you more. I remember the post Holi scene at Purvi's place when they threw in a shirtless scene for Arjun. I felt that he was far too well padded in the abs for such a display to be aesthetic.

Of course one cannot blame poor Rithwik, who seems to have fought a terrific battle with an inherited tendency towards flab, but Arjun just has to try harder. If you have fashioned Karan after Hrithik in Dhoom 2, Arjun is never going to be any competition: I remember the first dance Dhoom machaye, it was a mindblowing display of both amazing dancing skills and pure physical grace.

Then again, Arjun also lacks the inches; not everyone is a Mikhail Baryshnikov, whom one could watch on stage in Giselle and forget how short he was because of thet incredible athleticism of those giant leaps, and the sheer beauty of line. What can poor Arjun, in his stodgy 3 piece suits and mauve shirts, do against this Adonis?

Well, well, if you are going to get your pretty little hands on your boy wonder, that seems to be the only way Arjun can come out tops, by default!

Karan is MY dream come true 😆 ❤️ 😍

I'm thinking about writing myself into the story so Karan ends up with me! 🤣

Arjun got her too easily last time - he needs to work for her this time around.

Better hit the gym Arjun!!! 😈

OMG!!!! what a story. I really can't wait for chapter 8. Please laurie... This Karan character is superb. Very aristocratic and I really love it. Just like some characters that appears in Nora Robert's novel. Fantastic story line...my hats off to you Laurie.

Wonder where you get all this inspiration.. You should consider writting novels. You make a good writer with very well expressed emotions.
Now back to the story. I hope Karan is not "Soham" who's trying to unite Arvi. Not sure why but I have this gut feeling that he could be Soham!!!!!!

Dear Laurie,

I am not going to say all the usual nice (and entirely true) things about how well this chapter has come out and how smoothly it reads, and perhaps also about how intriguing it is. We, your greedy fellow forum members, are quite spoilt by now, and we expect all these things to be there every time, like the trick ending in an M.Night Shyamalan film.

What follows is not criticism, either of the constructive or the carping variety, but just comments.

Archana seemed decidedly odd here. Now, the point is that both she and Manav had already approved of Purvi making this business trip, and this when they had no idea Purvi's boss was going to reassure them personally that their daughter would be safe and well looked after. When he does extend them this unexpected extra courtesy, why all these ultra anxious demands that are way out of the normal?

The absence of the plural (i.e. daughters) here is deliberate. Teju, from what we know of her, could probably look after Karan Dhanjani more than the other way around. Moreover, when Manav was unperturbed at her hanging around London for weeks and months on the rather vague pretext of tennis tournaments, where is the question of anyone having to "look after her"? She is an add on that Manav and Archana have thought of, and surely it cannot be the responsibility of Purvi's boss to look after any and all such additions to Purvi's entourage.

To revert, one would expect any firm management to immediately inform a staffer's family if there should be any serious problem on such a business trip. But Archana's seeking a personal assurance from Purvi's boss that he would take care of her daughters, and make sure no harm comes to them and that they are properly looked after, seems decidedly over the top, and most bosses would react very negatively to these kind of demands. Karan might not object for reasons of his own, but Archana is not to know that. Moreover, it is a most unreasonable demand. What if Teju and Purvi were to decide to attend a rave party in London after office hours, and they get into trouble there? Is that too to be laid to Karan's account?

After all, Purvi, even if she has been India-bound all her life, is not a 12 year old being handed over by her anxious mother to the air hostess for a multi-hop flight across the globe. She is at least 22/23, and is supposed to be the Managing Director of this firm (though I would have thought that is rather too much for credibility; the only 22/23 year old MDs I have knowledge of are those whose father owns the company), and normally one would have expected her to have some responsibility for the other junior team members. Instead, Archana demands of Karan that her daughter(s) should be treated like Dresden porcelain. This is unheard of. If every one of Karan's female staffers had mothers of the same kind, he would have to stick to all male contingents for any foreign trip!

It is even odder for a staffer's mother to barge into the owner's room and question him about "what my Purvi means to you". Laurie, it is simply not credible. It leads to the presumption that Karan Dhanjani is (a) extra interested in "my Purvi", and (b) that this could be for less than acceptable reasons.

Even if Archana had felt the above, it would be very strange (and embarrassing, subsequently, for Purvi) if she were to ask Karan this outright, and this when there is absolutely no indication that anything could be amiss, in fact quite the opposite. It is quite different from the time she barged into Arjun Kirloskar's room and shouted at him for having, in effect, fired Purvi (though even that would, anywhere else, have got Archana fired, and rightly so).

Lastly, it is the strangest of all when Archana, after having had the famous feminine instinct warn her that Karan Dhanjani "wasn't all that he appeared to be", actually goes and asks him "Who are you really?"

Now, we know that Karan might be a mystery man, but for Purvi and Archana, he is just a regular company owner, and a very successful businessman with a spectacular professional track record. He is thus a real person, and not a shady fly by night operator. What then is the sense of Archana's very odd question? Normally, such a query would hardly be well received.

That Karan is unperturbed, and makes an answer worthy of the Delphic oracle, does not make what Archana does any more understandable or acceptable.

As for DK, he must not have seen Purvi for at least 2 months, that is ever since she joined the Karma group. Nonetheless, Arjun asks him about her, and he responds as if he had met her just recently. One should perhaps not quibble about what seems to be an excess of sensitivity on the part of DK when he describes Purvi and her reactions, but it seems a bit out of character. Perhaps the answer is that it is not just Arjun who has mellowed! DK has even started calling Arjun beta! Not even Aashana does that.

None of the above should be taken to mean that I did not thoroughly enjoy Chapter 7. I did, very much so.

To conclude, I am not going to indulge in speculations, wild or otherwise, as to what lies ahead, for the simple reason that an author has more unbridled power than the most autocratic of dictators, and he/she can do just about anything. Purvi might end up as the lost daughter of (no, not a Russian Grand Duke, that favourite parent of romantic fiction) a billionaire business family, perhaps even the Dhanjanis. There could be any number of other offshoots to your central tale, and it is fruitless to try and second guess such a fertile imagination.

There is however one thing that has been promised and which I eagerly await: Laurie's official entrance into The Raging Storm as the young woman who will tame Karan Dhanjani. Now that would be something to make me forget even Arjun-Purvi!
