Chapter 3:

It is 3:30 PM now

Manav: Ishi beta come! Your snack is ready!

He carried a tray with a glass of chocolate milk, a cup of coffee, and a plate of apples and peanut butter.

He set the tray down on the table.

Ishika came running down the stairs and sat down at the table. She immediately picked up her milk without even being told and drank the milk quickly.

Manav looked at her in surprise as she drank her milk without even complaining once.

Ishika: DONE! she said setting her glass down and smiling at her father.

Manav: Now that's my girl, he said stroking her head

Ishika: Can I have apples and peanut butter now?

Manav: Of course you can! he passed her the plate

Ishika finished eating and went to watch TV

Manav decided to call Archana and see when she would be coming home.

Manav took out his cell phone and speed dialed archana.

Archana who is walking across the mall parking lot towards her car hears her phone ringing. She sees it's manav and picks up.

Archana: Hi!

Manav: Hi, how's the shopping going?

Archana: All done. Soham and I are heading to the car right now. We should be home in probably 45 minutes. What are you two up to?

Manav: Nothing much. Ishi just finished her snack. And guess what, she drank her entire glass of milk without a single complaint or whine.

Archana: Wow really?!! can you give the phone to her?

Manav: Ishi beta! Mama wants to talk to you!

Ishika comes over from the TV room and takes the phone from manav

Ishika: Hi Mama!

Archana: Hi ishiboo! I heard you drank your entire glass of milk without complaining. I'm so proud of you sweetie pie!!

Ishika: Thank you Mama! Did you buy me anything?

Archana: Of course!

Ishika: What!!?? Ishika said with excitement

Archana: It's a surprise and I won't tell you what it is until I get home.

Ishika: Oh my gosh a surprise!!! Ishika was super excited now. Then come home quickly because I want to see it!!!

Archana: Yes sweetie I'm on my way, now can you give the phone back to daddy.

Ishika: Okay mama, come home quickly okay!!! she gave the phone back to Manav and happily skipped back to the TV room.

Manav: Anything else you wanted to tell me?

Archana: Yes. Could you do me a huge favor and get started on dinner? Just start cutting veggies for salad if you can.

Manav: Of course. Is there anything else you need me to do other than salad.

Archana: No I can do the rest once I get home. Anyways I'll see you at home okay.

Manav: Okay bye.

Archana: Bye.

After some time, Archana and Soham arrive back at home

Ishika was watching the window waiting for her mom to return so that she could see her surprise. She finally saw the car pull into the driveway.

Ishika: DADDY THEIR HOME!!! she said as she ran to the front door

Manav who was in the kitchen cutting up vegetables also went out to help archana bring in the shopping bags.

As soon as Archana entered the house, Ishika pounced on her

Ishika: Where's my surprise!!!!!??Where's my surprise!!!!!????

Archana: Ishika you have to wait a minute okay?

Manav also reaches the front door.

Manav: Where's Soham?

Archana: He's in the car sleeping. Could you wake him up and bring in the rest of the bags?

Manav: went outside to the car and saw Soham sleeping in the back. He opened the door and gently shook Soham.

Manav: Soham, Soham'he called out softly while gently shaking him.

Manav: Buddy your home. Wake up!

Soham slowly opens his eyes and sees that he was at home. He sleepily rubs his eyes and yawns.

Manav: Tired beta? he said as Soham tiredly got out of the car

Soham: Shopping with mom is the most tiring thing ever he said with a yawn.

Manav: So it looks like you're not watching the football game with me tonight because it looks like you're ready to go to bed. Manav was just teasing him as he knew his son would never give up watching football for anything.

Soham immediately wakes up and there is no indication of tiredness on his face anymore

Soham: Of course not!!! he said looking at his dad with a shocked face.

Archana walked back outside to see a completely awake Soham

Archana: Weren't you fast asleep a few minutes ago?

Soham: Yeah, but dad and I have to watch the football gave tonight so how can I be sleepy. Dad hurry up the pre-game show is about to start, he said grabbing Manav's hand and dragging him inside!!!

Archana: I fail to understand why boys find sports so entertaining she said to herself in disbelief and then started walking in.

Manav and Soham walk to the TV room and settle down on the couch.

Ishika is sitting on the floor coloring in the new Disney Princess coloring book which was the surprise gift that archana had gotten.

Ishika: Oh no, she groaned, Are you going to watch football?

Soham: Yes there's a game that's going to start soon, he said with excitement.

Manav: Ishiboo, why don't you go help mama with dinner, I think she is planning to make chocolate chip cookies for dessert and may need your help. Manav knew that Ishika absolutely loved helping Archana in the kitchen especially with baking yummy desserts.

Ishika: Yay Chocolate Chip Cookies!! she said excitedly as she ran over to the kitchen to help her Mama.

Soham and Manav gave a sigh of relief as she ran over to the kitchen. They could now peacefully watch the football game now without Ishika complaining about wanting to watch something else.

About two hours later the football game was over.

Manav and Soham: YEEESSS TOUCHDOWN!!!!!!!!!!!! WE WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they yelled while pounding the air with their fists.

Archana come's out of the kitchen with a bowl of salad and sees Manav and Soham doing some sort of victory dance. She already knew that the football team they had been rooting for had won from their yelling.

Archana: Could you boys direct some of that energy to helping me set the table for dinner?

Soham usually hated setting the table for dinner but that was one of the things he was required to do every day. He would never do the job without complaining though. But today was a little different'.

Soham: Of course Mama! He said happily walking into the kitchen.

Soham usually complains when he has to set the table as it is his least favorite job.

Archana is very happy to see Soham set the table without even complaining once.

Archana: Good boy Soham!

Pretty soon the table is set and the four of them all sit and eat dinner. After they finish with dinner Archana goes into the kitchen to get the chocolate chip cookies she had made with Ishika along with coffee for Manav and her.

Ishika: Mama can I please have the heart shape one I made.

Archana: Of course sweetie, she placed the hearts shape cookie on her plate and placed another one on Soham's plate. She then thought for a second and gave each of them one more. Ishika and Soham were surprised that Archana had given them extra dessert today and looked at her with shocked expressions.

Soham: Mom we didn't even ask for extra dessert today and you already gave us??

Archana: Well that is because you two behaved so well today so as a reward extra dessert!

Ishika: Thank you so much Mama!!

Soham: Thanks mom!!

They finished eating their cookies.

Soham: Ishika, mama bought us this new board game at the mall. Do you want to play that?

Ishika: Yes! Let's play that!

Both of them went running upstairs.

After Manav and Archana finished cleaning up the kitchen they also headed upstairs to their room.

Archana: Manav, Are you sure you will be able to leave early from work to go to the airport? she asked from inside the walk-in-closet where she was changing into her nightdress.

Manav: Yes archana don't worry, he said as he checked his office email one more time for any last minute emergency meetings he might have the next day, I don't have anything going on so I should be able to leave early to pick up Ma and Bauji from the airport. He closed his laptop and put it away. Manav always tried his best to not do any office work at home as he wanted to spend time with his family while he was at home. He was very balanced between family and work.

A very tired Ishika walked into her parents room dragging her feet she got up on the bed and curled up in her daddy's lap. Manav wrapped his hands around her and smiled.

Manav: Is daddy's little princess sleepy, he cooed softly

Ishika gave a slight nod keeping her eyes shut.

Manav: Lets go brush and get you changed into your pjs, he said as he picked her up into his arms and carried her to her room.

Manav helped her brush and change into her Pajamas. He then tucked her into bed.

Ishika: Goodnight daddy, she kissed his cheek.

Manav: Goodnight princess, he kissed her forehead and smoothed her hair back. He got up and stated walking away.

Archana came to Ishika's room to say goodnight after getting Soham in bed.

Manav: Is Soham in bed?

archana: Yes he is. He's reading a book right now.

Manav walks into Soham's room and see's him asleep with his book laying on top of him.

Manav Chuckles quietly to himself. He picks up the book and sets it on the nightstand. He then tucks in Soham properly. He places a gentle kiss on his forehead and then walks out the door after shutting the lights off.

He and Archana finally get into their own bed after getting the kids settled.

They are both so exhausted from the day and fall asleep almost immediately

The next day Manav heads off to work and Archana takes the kids out. They go to the park and then go out for lunch. Manav calls archana and lets her know that he is leaving work to go and pick up his parents from the airport. Archana heads home with the kids to make sure everything is set for the arrival of the very special people. The kids do not know that their grandparents were coming to stay with them or some time. Manav and Archana decided to keep it a surprises for them.

Ishika and Soham are outside playing when they see Manav's car pull into the driveway.

Ishika: Bhaiya, why is daddy home so early today, it's only 3:00

Soham: I was wondering the same thing.

Manav got out of the car and saw the confused expressions on his kids faces.

He opened the passenger seat door and Savita and Damodar come out

Savita and Damo: SURPRISE!!!!

Ishika and Soham: DADDU DADDI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

they both go running towards their grandparents and hug them very tightly.

Savita: OHHH MY LITTLE MUNCHKINS!!!! I missed my pumpkin pies so much she said smoldering both of them in kisses.

Damo: We've missed you guys sooo much he said hugging both of them

Archana hearing the noise came running out of the house.

Archana: Ma bauji!! she said very excited and happy she touched their feet and hugged both of them

Savita: Oh my enough, she said as archana touched her feet. How are you my darling she said hugging her.

Archana: Very good Ma. I'm so happy that both of you came. We've been missing you a lot!

Damo: We've also been missing you guys so much. But now that we are here we will all have a good time, he said happily

They all walked into the house, Savita and Damo went up to freshen up after the long flight while Manav helped Archana put out Snacks on the table and Coffee. Then they entire family sat down to eat.

Ishika: Daddi look! She drank her entire glass of milk very quickly without complaining. She set her glass down and looked at her grandma smiling

Savita: Wow!!! Last time I visited there would be a shouting match to get you to drink your milk and now your drinking by yourself without complaining! Very good munchkin she said planting a kiss on her cheek. I'm so proud of you!!

Soham: Daddu you have to watch tonight's football game with me and Dad.

Savita: Oh dear, she said keeping her hand on her forhead. This one is also a football fanatic.

Damo: Like grandfather like father like son, right Soham beta?, Soham gave his daddu a high five.

Ishika: Don't worry daddi, I hate football.

Everyone started laughing after listening to Ishikas cute innocent reply.

Ishika: WHAT?! she said sounding frustrated, What's so funny?

Savita: Nothing beta she said pulling Ishika's cheek.

They all finished eating. Savita went to help Archana in the kitchen while Damo decided to take a quick nap. Manav agreed to take his highly energized and excited kids to the park.

Archana: Ma please go and rest. I will not allow you to do any work. she said firmly

Savita: Archana beta your too much. Okay fine I won't do any work, do I have permission to at least to just stay here and not do any work? she asked with a smile

Archana: Yes but no doing work she said firmly as she began shelling peas for matar paneer.

They both chatted happily while archana cooked dinner. Archana loved her mother-in-law more than anything because she was always able to share anything with her, even if it had to do with problems with Manav without Savita ever treating her unfairly because Manav was her son. In fact Savita supported Archana more than she supported Manav. She always treated archana as her own daughter.

After sometime Manav returned home with the kids while Damo also wakes up from his nap. They both headed to the kitchen to see what the ladies were up to. They entered the kitchen and smiled seeing them both happily chatting away while cooking dinner.

Damo: My oh my does it smell amazing in here. I can't wait to eat dinner.

Archana: Bauji just a few more minutes and dinner will be ready. Manav can you get the kids washed up before dinner. I'm sure they are very dirty and smelly from the park.

Manav: There both in the shower right now so don't worry about it.

Pretty soon dinner was ready and everyone sat down at the big dining table today.

It was very happy atmosphere as Savita and Damo were now with them which added to the fun and happiness. The kids talked nonstop with them about the latest happening while Manav and Archana tried to get them to eat something. Archana made sure her in-laws ate well. They all happily ate together laughing and enjoying.
