I agree when you say he has given a lot of pain to Archu. Absolutely right.
But I disagree when you say he treats Archu like that cos she takes it.
In fact the fact that she takes it hurts him much much more, infinitely more. It is a very sensitive thing- when we do wrong to others, and we know this, then we expect them to get flared up at us, shout at us, scream at us. We consider it as our punishment. But when they don't do it and instead tolerate it silently or show sad acceptance, it hurts much more.
Think of your Mom, Tanya Di and this fact. It happens with me all the time- when I do something wrong, I expect my mother to shout at me. I call her up nervously, but then when she says ok and hides her disappointment I cry on the phone for having upsetted her. Its human nature. I'm sure it has happened to everyone here.
We could see this same thing in the serial: Archu's silence at the sindoor scene did not give Manav the encouragement to go ahead with the engagement (it gave Savita and Girish encouragement to go ahead with engagement) , rather it gave Manav a lot more fears. Having witnessed Archu's condition at the sindoor scene, he knew that Archu would be very very hurt and yet not say anything. So what did he do???
1.) He said that you go to your parents house for the day, since he knew it would hurt her very badly.
2.) He was sitting like a dead body at the engagemnt, while Archana was crying inside.
3.) After the engagement, he came to Archu and confessed that it pained him a lot to see her hurt that way and asked her to move on and forget him.
edit add:
After the engagement he shouted at his Aai two times for abusing Archana, so badly that his Aai had no option but to keep quiet.
He then accepted the Ganpati idol that she had given with tears in his eyes.
This is only one example, there are countless others.
