Chapter 3 –
Thanks to Kunal's advice, now Siddhi had a full proof plan. She was full of energy and was giving her 100% every day. Soon with help of her client she started searching for more workers who were wronged by the corporation. She had already filed case for negligence that afforded her more time. With-in 2 weeks she was able to get 6 more workers who too were injured at the assembly line and were binded by a contract.
While Siddhi was preparing day and night for her case, without her knowledge Kunal was observing her very closely. Although he was an expert in presenting indifference to almost everything, here he just couldn't help but make note of what Siddhi was doing. Siddhi herself would at times go to Kunal for advice. As much attitude Kunal would project, he would still help Siddhi with whatever she needs. He still kept himself away from any direct involvement in court or with clients; his advice proved to be utmost helpful to Siddhi.
Over the course of next month, case received more and more attention. So that only put more pressure on Siddhi. From simple case, now it became most important war for Thakrals. Siddhi sure received moral support from her small law-firm, but in court room she was all alone. Siddhi was doing the best she can during all of the court proceedings; her paper work was without a doubt impeccable and had appropriate evidences to support her claims. But she lacked the rhetoric brilliance that was necessary for her to go against Thakrals.
Now the case was at end point. Judge had announced last hearing date to be held after 3 days. It was last chance for Siddhi to make her case and provide closing statements. Siddhi was very much tensed as what will happen. So far she had done fairly decent job, but she certainly struggled with court proceedings. So far she managed, but now it was last hearing and she felt she might not be able to handle it. No one at her law-firm was even willing to come to court with her. She received some encouragement, but mere words are not enough.
Again Siddhi was as usual standing by the window trying to clear up her mind. She was trying hard for answers but nothing really came to mind. Just then she felt someone's presence there and it was Kunal. Kunal was jogging something down on legal pad. For reasons beyond Siddhi, she just felt better seeing Kunal there. She felt only Kunal can help her at this point.
Siddhi went near Kunal and almost stood there on his head😊. Kunal knew this means she wants to talk, he shook his head and looked up to Siddhi, "What now?"
Siddhi, "I need your help. Yes I know you don't care about anything but still. You don't know.."
Kunal, "Oh I know. I am aware of the wonderful job you have been doing in court there." He ended with sarcasm.
Siddhi sure got the sarcasm, but something else caught her attention, "You know what is taking place in court? Does that mean you have been coming to court for every hearing?"😲
Kunal got irritated and he gave look to Siddhi, "that is what you heard? You care to know if I have been coming to court hearing or not? Does it really matter how I know you were stammering by the end of the last hearing or that you got so nervous a blind man can see perspiration on your forehead. What happened, happened regardless of who was present there."
Siddhi thought ok he was there, he even noticed sweat on my forehead. But Siddhi controled her emotions. "But you do know how things are going. You must help me how to proceed next time. It will be last hearing so…"
Kunal, "I must help you. (Kunal got bit more irritated) So what was it that I did so far? I told you what would make your case stronger and helped you anyway I can. That is why your paper work is damn good and you have sufficient evidence for your case. What you lack is presentation. You do not win case by strong paper work alone. You need to be able to sell it. Also are you so naive to believe you are fighting against your friend Anand Chopra? He can be Gold medalist but he is simply mouthing those words, it actually comes from Thakral. They are simply putting him in front of you to play with you. If you can't get these two matters, well I don't know if anyone can help you at all." He moved away from Siddhi and buried himself in his work again.
Siddhi for a minute was numb there. She really hoped Kunal would help her but that very man shattered her morale. Kunal was ignoring her and she couldn't take it anymore. So she decided it is best to leave. On her way home and even once she got home, she kept thinking about what Kunal said. Well it was more of the way he talked to her than anything else. For some reason she couldn't accept the way he talked to her. She knew he has an attitude and big ego, but come on; it's her he was talking to. Somehow she convinced herself tomorrow will be better day and go to sleep if she wants peace of mind.
Next day as usual Siddhi was the first one to reach the office at 8:45 am. She went to her desk; before she sat down she looked at Kunal's desk, shook her head and finally sat down. She put her purse on side and was about to get started with her work but saw an envelope with her name on it. She opened the envelope and it seemed like a letter or something. She started reading it and it provided pointers on how she should proceed in next hearing. It stated clearly what points she needed to raise in what order and what her closing statement should consists off. In back there was something else, "One Saturday I went to my office thinking it will be like any other day. But to my surprise this little lady firmly held my wrist and questioned me. I saw perfect combination of assertiveness, attitude and command. Am I the only lucky-person to meet her?"
Without her knowledge, a smile crept on Siddhi's face. She thought oh what am I going to do with this guy? Why can't he just say it directly, always attitude. Oh well, I guess attitude makes it better.😳 While Siddhi was lost in her thoughts, Kunal walked-in and sat down on his desk without making any noise. Siddhi's morning was getting better and better.
She went to Kunal, "Thanks." Kunal gave her look as what are you talking about?
By now Siddhi had learned this guy is tough nut to crack, "for the letter you left me."
Kunal with attitude, "I don't know what you are talking about." moved his face to other side.
Siddhi thought oh really, "then I guess it was ok of me to just throw away that paper.."
Kunal got a reflex, turned to her, "you threw away my..' oh damn it, he just accepted it was him. He felt so embarrassed😳 he had to move his face towards window and as a sly smile came up.
Siddhi on the other hand was just so happy she was able to make akdoo Kunal Chopra confess😎. She sat down proudly with a wide smile😃 as her day is going to be so gooddd...
