[Krishna is the new guru at B-schools and boardrooms across the country as companies look to the scriptures for management strategies]

In October 2013, Tata group chairman Cyrus Mistry and other CEOs had an unusual session at their annual conclave on ethics in Mumbai. An IIM director made a presentation on the relevance of the Bhagavad Gita in management. Mistry concurred.

The result: copies of 'Timeless Leadership: 18 Leadership Sutras from the Bhagavad Gita', a book authored by this IIM Kozhikode director Debasish Chatterjee, have just been distributed across the Tata Group as the conglomerate looks to move beyond compliance to commitment and conscience.

In the heart of the capital, India's largest automaker Maruti Suzuki is busy training its leaders in self-management and time management. The two-day course module, also based on the Bhagavad Gita, seeks to improve efficiency, effectiveness and effortlessness. Already, employees are making a beeline for the sessions, believing it will improve personal as well as professional lives.

Not too far away, engineering conglomerate, Escorts has roped in a motivation trainer, and a Bhagavad Gita-specialist, to inspire its 20 union leaders.

The leaders have to work with management and workers, aligning their priorities with both. This makes their job tough as the company has one of the strongest unions in India.

Teachings from the Gita are expected to ease the task.

State Bank of India, NTPC and NHPC, MMTC are among the growing list of corporates looking up to the Gita to solve management labyrinths.

From mind control to value-based management, motivation and leadership, it seems to have an answer for everything.

As things stand, Lord Krishna seems to be emerging as the new Peter Drucker of management in India.

After all, he is the one who imparted the timeless wisdom to his disciple Arjuna when he was indecisive about taking up arms in the epic battle of Kurukshetra in The Mahabharata.

What makes the 5,200-year-old text so relevant in today's business and economic context?

"The Gita is old in chronology but contemporary in essence. When basic business principles cease to work and when the rate of change outside is faster than change within, even businesses need deeper anchor points for decision-making not available in contemporary literature," says Chatterjee of IIM Kozhikode.

Vivek Bindra, corporate trainer and director, Global ACT, says, "Gita is beyond time, place and circumstances. The temporary solutions we are seeking from the West are often inadequate. And that is turning corporates to the Gita."

Bindra started in 2006 with 10 corporate clients. That number is over 100 now.

Vice chairman at Piramal Enterprises, Swati Piramal agrees. "I think the importance of value is being recognised worldwide now."

Her group has, for many years, been following the values of Gita " knowledge (gyan), action (karma) and care (bhakti).

"Our partners tell us that one of the reasons they want to work with us is because we walk the talk when it comes to our values."

Not surprisingly, in 2011, when Vodafone Plc was looking for a partner to meet shareholding norms in its India operations, it sold 5.5 per cent stake to Piramal Healthcare in what was termed as a "strange deal".

To the outside world, the engagement of telecom with pharma was surprising. But to both parties, it wasn't.

Given the regulatory uncertainty in the Indian operations, Vodafone wanted a partner who not only had the money but also believed in all the values that would allow Vodafone to focus on operations without bothering about the future of its shareholding.

And that is the aim of most corporates " to be able to run their businesses smoothly and effectively. Motivated employees who can improve productivity with a smile are a bonus.

"Spiritual texts often contain sound management principles that can provide vital lessons in a corporate set-up. In addition to our regular programmes, we thought we could turn to the Bhagavad Gita for management insights," says SY Siddiqui, COO, HR, IT & finance, at Maruti Suzuki.

The teachings become even more relevant in today's economic environment where businesses are saddled with debts and losses while employees are uncertain about their future prospects.

"You need internal cohesion, external resilience, ability to deal with stress and an ability to operate beyond the ego. And the Gita helps in all of this," says Chatterjee.

At public sector undertakings, the crisis today is somewhat different. Under pressure from ministries as well as regulators, PSUs are suffering from a fear of decision-making. To motivate decision-making is a challenge at these companies.

Metals and Minerals Trading Corporation of India (MMTC) has opted for motivational soft skills programmes to improve their decision-making abilities.

"When employees become push-start managers, learnings from the Gita help them become self-start leaders," says Bindra. "This is precisely what Krishna did " he guided Arjuna to decide why fighting the battle was necessary."

At India's largest bank, State Bank of India (SBI), it is the managers of SME branches (specialising in lending to small and medium enterprises) that require motivation. And so, the bank has started a course for them based on the principles of Gita.

While the focus of these spirituality in business sessions' may differ from company to company, their impact surely goes beyond professional to personal level.

A Maruti employee, who has participated in the course, says it helps draw a great parallel between the shloka 'Karmanye vadhikaraste ma phaleshu kadachana'
[ COMMENT : To work (karma) alone you have the right. Not the reward ] in corporate life and real life.

"Often we lose our cool over petty issues at work or at home. Practicing the mool mantra eases out things everywhere, gets things done fast and reduces stress," he says.

An employee at SBI, who has participated in the course, says the content is very relevant for today's lifestyle. "We are seeking return from every action. The Gita helps us understand the spirit of Karma and focus on doing rather than expecting immediate returns. It taught me to listen to others and take their perspective into account " something I had forgotten to do," she says.

Bindra adds that lives today have become stressful and every day is like a battle.

"Krishna trained Arjun to overcome depression and indecision in 48 minutes. Those similar questions are visible in today's life and can be answered through the Gita."

B-schools are also going all the way to increase the spirituality quotient in their courses.

Corporate honchos as well as aspiring managers are now making a beeline to management courses to understand the importance of spirituality in business.

IIM Kozhikode, for instance, has started a course on Timeless Leadership and Self Incorporated', based on insights from the Gita. "It is an open-ended course, which runs through the year," says Chatterjee.

Mumbai's SP Jain Institute has made compulsory a course on The Science of Spirituality' under its executive MBA programme.

IIM Indore too has incorporated sessions on the Gita as part of the course module on Ancient Oriental Philosophy and Spirituality'.

Despite Gita being an integral part of the Hindu culture, managers don't look upon it as a religious text.

"I clearly believe that this has nothing to do with religion or faith per se. We all recognise that the programme is management -focused and not on religious dimensions. It is about identifying the universal principles contained in the Gita and applying them to a corporate setting," says Siddiqui.

He is quick to add, while the classic management texts provide valuable insights for people, the Bhagavad Gita and other sacred texts offer fresh perspectives, contributing to the body of management knowledge.

At the Piramal group, it is not only the values that are based on spirituality, but the group's logo as well.

The logo is the Gyan Mudra, the universal sign of knowledge. It is the sign of the hand when one is trying to gain knowledge " the tips of index finger and the thumb join to make a circle. "We have left the circle open as a symbol of humility. We believe that the circle of excellence is incomplete and that we want to learn more and keep an open mind," says Piramal.

She has translated the teachings of the Gita into practical action. The group's partnerships are based on values and quality is paramount " so much so that even the manufacturing facilities that don't require approval from the USFDA have been designed in compliance with those norms. "Sometimes, it leads to delays. But we prefer long-term benefits over short-term gains," she adds.

As things stand, spirituality in business seems to be here to stay. After all, when the economy is down and all else fails, many do turn to the ancient texts for sustenance.

Dancing golden serpent

Many many years ago she,it danced a shimmering dance clothed in skin of gold
serpentine and sinuous she walked and i crawled in amazement totally lost
lips full and wide with promises of love and sex and wild nights
but the mouth hid the forked tongue full of poison and nightmares
The serpent bit me again and again burying her fangs deep in me
The honey i thought in ecstasy, swooned and fell under her spell and into her arms
she lay me,she laid on me and soon i turned into a swine and other beasts
she clawed me and drew everything from me into her soul
and soon i was husk withered and dried and dust
In darkness i lay a beast in human form thirsting for more and more poison
and then she flew away in a shimmer dancing her serpentine dance
and i lay broken, poisoned and barely recognizable to myself
so from the deep dark well with slippery walls i climbed,i crawled out into light
the light burnt the poison away from me and i got my soul and strength back

Years have passed and now the embers of poison are flaming again
in the dusty distance in the farthest reaches of my conscience she has
started dancing again, her golden slim body beckoning to her poisoned lair
from the power of the light i stand weak and shivering gazing and mesmerized
the dust is settling and the serpent is drawing near with fangs of poison and false promises
and my soul quakes in fear of what will be and will not be
and yet the strength that came into my limbs as i crawled inch by inch out of the darkness of her poison and prison still remains
The golden naked body slides and rubs and caresses and strokes my skin
she gazes with her eyes and tries to peer into my soul
and she whispers promises of nights with angels and heaven
and yet i stood and gazed into the serpent's eyes
and i finally saw her for what she was
The haze has cleared, the smoke has settled
and i drew my sword and cut off the head of the serpent
i hacked it into many pieces and reached into its heart and
saw my memories and soul still beating in her slimy heart
i smiled and then without a thought i plunged the sword
into my beating heart and was free, finally free of the serpent

QUOTES,NOTES AND MUSINGS

""I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity".
Edgar Allan Poe"

"One of the deep secrets of life is all that is really worth doing is what we do for others.
Lewis Carroll"

"If you win, say nothing. If you lose, say less.
Paul Brown"

Drinking Alone

I take my wine jug out among the flowers
to drink alone, without friends.
I raise my cup to entice the moon.
That, and my shadow, makes us three.
But the moon doesn't drink,
and my shadow silently follows.
I will travel with moon and shadow,
happy to the end of spring.
When I sing, the moon dances.
When I dance, my shadow dances, too.
We share life's joys when sober.
Drunk, each goes a separate way.
Constant friends, although we wander,
we'll meet again in the Milky Way.
Li Po

The nature of compassion isn't coming to terms with your own suffering and applying it to others: It's knowing that other folks around you suffer and, no matter what happens to you, no matter how lucky or unlucky you are, they keep suffering. And if you can do something about that, then you do it, and you do it without whining or waving your own f**king cross for the world to see. You do it because it's the right thing to do.

Donkey In The Well

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do.
Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey.
He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well.
At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down.
A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up.
As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted off!
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a steppingstone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.

NOW --------
Enough of that crap . . .
The donkey later came back and bit the shit out of the farmer who had tried to bury him. The gash from the bite got infected, and the farmer eventually died in agony from septic shock.
MORAL FROM TODAY'S LESSON:
When you do something wrong and try to cover your ass, it always comes back to bite you.

A man was seen fleeing down the hall of the hospital just before his operation.
"What's the matter?" he was asked.
He said, "I heard the nurse say, 'It's a very simple operation, don't worry, I'm sure it will be all right."
"She was just trying to comfort you, what's so frightening about that?"
"She wasn't talking to me. She was talking to the doctor.

The little boy greeted his grandmother with a hug and said, "I'm so happy to see you grandma. Now maybe daddy will do the trick he has been promising us."

The grandmother was curious.

"What trick is that my dear?" she asked.

The little boy replied, "I heard daddy tell mommy that he would climb the walls if you came to visit us again."

The Difference Between Men And Women. This Is Genius.

Let's say a guy named Fred is attracted to a woman named Martha. He asks her out to a movie; she accepts; they have a pretty good time. A few nights later he asks her out to dinner, and again they enjoy themselves. They continue to see each other regularly, and after a while neither one of them is seeing anybody else.

And then, one evening when they're driving home, a thought occurs to Martha, and, without really thinking, she says it aloud: "Do you realize that, as of tonight, we've been seeing each other for exactly six months?"

And then, there is silence in the car.

To Martha, it seems like a very loud silence. She thinks to herself: I wonder if it bothers him that I said that. Maybe he's been feeling confined by our relationship; maybe he thinks I'm trying to push him into some kind of obligation that he doesn't want, or isn't sure of.

And Fred is thinking: Gosh. Six months.

And Martha is thinking: But, hey, I'm not so sure I want this kind of relationship either. Sometimes I wish I had a little more space, so I'd have time to think about whether I really want us to keep going the way we are, moving steadily towards, I mean, where are we going? Are we just going to keep seeing each other at this level of intimacy? Are we heading toward marriage? Toward children? Toward a lifetime together? Am I ready for that level of commitment? Do I really even know this person?

And Fred is thinking: ...so that means it was...let's see...February when we started going out, which was right after I had the car at the dealer's, which means...lemme check the odometer...Whoa! I am way overdue for an oil change here.

And Martha is thinking: He's upset. I can see it on his face. Maybe I'm reading this completely wrong. Maybe he wants more from our relationship, more intimacy, more commitment; maybe he has sensed - even before I sensed it - that I was feeling some reservations. Yes, I bet that's it. That's why he's so reluctant to say anything about his own feelings. He's afraid of being rejected.

And Fred is thinking: And I'm gonna have them look at the transmission again. I don't care what those morons say, it's still not shifting right. And they better not try to blame it on the cold weather this time. What cold weather? It's 87 degrees out, and this thing is shifting like a garbage truck, and I paid those incompetent thieves $600.

And Martha is thinking: He's angry. And I don't blame him. I'd be angry, too. I feel so guilty, putting him through this, but I can't help the way I feel. I'm just not sure.

And Fred is thinking: They'll probably say it's only a 90-day warranty...scumballs.

And Martha is thinking: Maybe I'm just too idealistic, waiting for a knight to come riding up on his white horse, when I'm sitting right next to a perfectly good person, a person I enjoy being with, a person I truly do care about, a person who seems to truly care about me. A person who is in pain because of my self-centered, schoolgirl romantic fantasy.

And Fred is thinking: Warranty? They want a warranty? I'll give them a warranty. I'll take their warranty and stick it right up their...

"Fred," Martha says aloud.

"What?" says Fred, startled.

"Please don't torture yourself like this," she says, her eyes beginning to brim with tears. "Maybe I should never have...oh dear, I feel so..."(She breaks down, sobbing.)

"What?" says Fred.

"I'm such a fool," Martha sobs. "I mean, I know there's no knight. I really know that. It's silly. There's no knight, and there's no horse."

"There's no horse?" says Fred.

"You think I'm a fool, don't you?" Martha says.

"No!" says Fred, glad to finally know the correct answer.

"It's just that...it's that I...I need some time," Martha says.

(There is a 15-second pause while Fred, thinking as fast as he can, tries to come up with a safe response. Finally he comes up with one that he thinks might work.)

"Yes," he says. (Martha, deeply moved, touches his hand.)

"Oh, Fred, do you really feel that way?" she says.

"What way?" says Fred.

"That way about time," says Martha.

"Oh," says Fred. "Yes." (Martha turns to face him and gazes deeply into his eyes, causing him to become very nervous about what she might say next, especially if it involves a horse. At last she speaks.)

"Thank you, Fred," she says.

"Thank you," says Fred.

Then he takes her home, and she lies on her bed, a conflicted, tortured soul, and weeps until dawn, whereas when Fred gets back to his place, he opens a bag of Doritos, turns on the TV, and immediately becomes deeply involved in a rerun of a college basketball game between two South Dakota junior colleges that he has never heard of. A tiny voice in the far recesses of his mind tells him that something major was going on back there in the car, but he is pretty sure there is no way he would ever understand what, and so he figures it's better if he doesn't think about it.

The next day Martha will call her closest friend, or perhaps two of them, and they will talk about this situation for six straight hours. In painstaking detail, they will analyze everything she said and everything he said, going over it time and time again, exploring every word, expression, and gesture for nuances of meaning, considering every possible ramification.

They will continue to discuss this subject, off and on, for weeks, maybe months, never reaching any definite conclusions, but never getting bored with it either.

Meanwhile, Fred, while playing racquetball one day with a mutual friend of his and Martha's, will pause just before serving, frown, and say: "Norm, did Martha ever own a horse?"

WOMAN,MAN AND NALLA PAMBU

I wonder if in the darkness of the womb a baby knows if it is a male or female although the sex has been decided and done with the second a sperm invades the egg [Damn the invasion starts there].Maybe hormones decide much before the birth of a child on how she or he decides to grow, live and die.But that something, that abstract thing called spirit or life which kick starts the engine of the the child is purely driven and motivated by life.So from conception although life starts the same way boys and girls go their separate ways.

Everything mother nature devices and decides seems to be aimed at procreation and furthering of the species. But somewhere along the way she made a mistake and human beings have become aware and conscious.I really do wonder what made this possible and i agree with you that many still haven't become aware or conscious from the way they go on about god, religion and sex.I am not very sure but still i can safely say apart from Homosapiens no other life or species on earth sits, contemplates and ponders about matters related to the intangible and abstract.

Maybe it is just a crude experiment by some passing alien life form who altered some primate DNA and left behind to maybe come back some day and see the results of their experiment.Who knows what kick started this voyage of self awareness and amazement about all things beautiful and wonderful. It is not logical and not totally logical to attribute all things mysterious, miraculous and supernatural to this higher spirit called GOD.For if not that awesome being called GOD then who else could have done it and definitely not some ancient super human race.

There is a saying that if a buffalo prays to god then god will appear to it in the form of a buffalo.Makes sense for it would not make sense if god did appear to the buffalo in the form of a lion or a tiger. Then what will remain i am sure is bull shit meaning that the buffalo would surely shit his pants before vanishing in fright.I guess when we worship and god appears in the form of a snake or a crocodile i guess we would shit our pants before reason can take hold of things.Well long ago i happened to pass a group of people who were screaming their head off and literally beating the grass around a compound wall. The curious joe young boy i was i went nay sidled my way into the crowd and realised that they were trying to kill a snake.Snake well all somebody said was snake and i teleported to my home and sweated profusely for the rest of the day.A few days later i saw some of the people from that crowd who tried to kill the snake pouring milk into a small mud mountain.Yup i do remember films like Vellikilamai Viratham, neeya for those sexy hip movements made by the heroines who were trying to imitate a snake.i do wonder about the snakes of the heroes who acted opposite them.maybe those snakes are relations of the petti kulla pambu variety.Wait i do wonder about this natural phenomenon called hard on and wonder, have always wondered about how heroes control the blood flow to southern regions when they are acting with voluptuous and buxom heroines.God i hope i dont get to act with my favourite dream queens such as sneha and priyamani.ok,stop it,stop being judgemental those two females just get me going .ok that is for another day.

See all snakes are given their due respect when they are in their place.Come friday, people will pour boiling milk down the mud pits thinking the snakes are waiting for their milk when in fact the termites must be scampering screaming " RUN,RUN,SAVE YOURSELF IT IS THAT WHITE ACID RAINFALL AGAIN ".do snakes drink milk,i guess not,but the minute a snake regardless it being a cobra or a rat snake comes out of a hole and tries to cross the road to go to the loo or to go visit its relations, man oh man the poor snake is chased, hunted and clobbered to death.F..k,it just doesn't make sense not that many things about human makes sense, all nonsense.Beware all men, like that snake, bathed in milk one day and clobbered to death the next so to the same fate might befall to your snakes if they dont remain in the places they should remain.

I started with spirit, man, woman and conception and i have meandered to friday paambu duties.Man and woman, wow a tiny chromosome and tiny secretions of hormones change our physical and most importantly the psychological aspects of our bodies.See mother nature is either done and i dread to think that or she is still in the process of upgrading the human model for seriously the world would be a better place if man and woman can live in harmony. No rapes,no molestation, equality in every step and stage and similar thought process in all decisions.

Division and diversity seems to be the name of the game and all this process of countless millennium will recent in specific breeding and genetic mutations of some superhuman species which maybe the norm for some far off catastrophe or apocalypse that is going to happen.I remember when i was growing up that my favourite heroes were ram and lakshman and using bows made up of branches i used to go around shooting arrows from the thennan thodappam at bindu my kutti cousin sister.well the thennan thodappams were used against me by my aunts is another topic, but when i was going around shooting arrows and trying to be lord rama she used to dress up dolls and comb their hair.i grew up climbing trees and playing kabbadi, ghilli thaandu and girls i knew used to practice lemon in the spoon race and walk like ftv models with the spoons in their mouths.See what i am getting to or alluring to is that man and woman come together for acts of vandalism sorry marriage and you know what they do,of course you know what they do.

If only we could see the spirit in ourselves and not distinguish between nuts and tits and live in harmony.Done i got this off my chest, now that is what you call rambling.

A small story about avaiyaar, thiruvalluvar and tamil sangam

During the Sangam period, for any one to publish any work in Tamil, it was necessary that it was first approved by the Tamil Sangam at Madurai. So Valluvar took his masterpiece for approval, but the lead poets (Pulavar)s at Madurai rejected his work saying that it did not follow any of the grammatical category of Tamil Literature (Venba, Aasiriyappa..). But Valluvar said he had categorised it as a KURAL VENBA. But the poets we not ready to accept his categorisation and rejected his work. So Valluvar left sadly out and on the way met Avaiyar and they had a chat, Avaiyar came to know that Valluvar's work was rejected at the Tamil Sangam. Avaiyar read the work and found it to be a masterpiece of all times and realised it should be made known to the world. So she took Valluvar with her saying that she would help him get the approval and went to meet the King of Madurai to talk about this. But the Poets and Ministers planned against Avaiyar and locked the gates locked together with 4 chains and asked her to meet the King, if possible, by breaking the chains . This made Avaiyar very angryat the action of the Ministers and Poets and she used her power to sing the aram for the good purpose and sang 4 songs.

Aartha sabai nootru oruvar Aayirathu Ondraam Pulavar
Vaarthai Pathinaayirathu oruvar Pootha malar
thanda marai thiruvay Thatha kodikku oruvar
Undayin Undendru Aru

One in hundred could speak in a gathering/stage; One in thousand is a Poet; One in 10,000 will keep their word; And One in a crore (1,00,00,000) would have characteristics that they can be considered equal to GOD himself. If the above is true, let the chain break apart.

And there blew the first chain!!!

Thandamal Eevathu Thaalanmai Aduthupin sendrakkaal
Eevathu vanmai aduthupin sendrakkaal eevathu
kaarkooli aduthupin Sendrum iyyathan
echcham pol aru

Now the song about different name for different attitudes in providing help. Providing help or money just by understanding the situation of the persons is called (thaalanmai) benefaction. And providing help or money after being asked is Vanmai (donation). Providing help or money after going back again and again is Kaarkooli (roughly Alm). And like the one who would be cursed for not helping even after persistent attempts for help asked, let the chains blow off. And there blew off the second chain

Ulla vazhakku irukka ooraar podhuvirukka
Thalli vazhakadhanai thaan pesi kaikooli
Vaangum Thaan aruvaan thann kilayum
Echcham arum endral aru

This one is quite heavy in meaning but true, and it is for the Judges of the courts. What the song means is that, With the case before him, and the people of the country before him, the judge who gives a biased judgement and gets the money for it, will perish and so will his descendants and family. If this is true, let the chains blow up. And the third chain blew off.

Vazhakudaiyaan iruppa valiyarai koodi
Vazhakkai Azhivazhakku seithon
Vazhakudaiyaan Sutramum Thaanum Azhudha Kanneraal
Echcham Arum Endral Aru

This one is more heavier than the previous one. With the plaintiff before the court, the person who uses undue influence by joining hands with the stronger guy (rather hooligan) and makes the case to nothing, will perish by the effect of the tears in the eyes of the plaintiff and his people. If it is true, let the chains blow up.

And there, blew off all the 4 chains and Avaiyar met the king and then the Thirukural was put in the Por thamarai kulam (Pond with the Golden Lotus - which inside the Madurai Meenakshi amman Temple even today) and the por thamarai accepted it, making Thirukural universally accepted.
