Scene 14

There was an eerie silence in the courtyard. Unnatural to their character, Viren and Rupan sat silently, still unable to take off the sight they had witnessed out of their mind, sight of Nisha in trauma. Dadi was looking worriedly at her husband, who seemed to have fixed his eyes and thoughts on something so far away from everyone. Vimla, from the look on Dadi's face, understood there was something they didn't know.

"Maa ji! You know something that we don't know?" She didn't try to question subtly. Viren, Mohan and Rupan looked curiously at their parents.

"Sukku! Listen...Wait!" shouted Umesh trying to stop his brother. Sukku stormed into the courtyard and stood in front of his grandparents. "What happened in Pilani?" he shot.

The rest of the cousins assembled too. Dolly and Jwala stood sadly. They were the very few who knew the truth.

"Dadi! I think it's important everyone knows the truth," said Jwala. She glared at her mother accusingly confusing Rupan.

"It's nothing!" lied Dadi.

"No Saroj!" spoke Dadaji, bringing his sight and mind into the current happenings. "I think it's time they all know...It's time we realise that it's not always about us, our problems and our family..."

"Bauji! You are talking like something grave had happened...I mean...Nisha had a nightmare...that's it, right?" As much as Viren had always had problems with Nisha, he couldn't think of the worst case. He didn't want to think about that.

The cousins were waiting impatiently. Umesh had successfully calmed Sukku down for the moment. "Dadaji! Please tell us what happened? Why did Nisha react like this? And Pilani? Did something happen there?" asked Umesh. The cousins were unable to believe there was something they didn't know about their cousin.

Dadaji cleared his throat getting everyone's eyes and brain focused. "Some 8 years ago, when Nisha was around 13, Dolly and Nisha had gone to attend a sports meet in Pilani? An incident happened there, which changed Nisha's life completely, which changed Nisha completely..." Dadaji's stressed voice faded away. Dadi placed a hand on her husband's shoulder, signaling she would continue. She knew her husband wouldn't be able to narrate it. Dolly and Jwala sat down by a pillar, in tears. Even with them knowing Nisha's past, they never realised how her past was still haunting her.

"Nisha, while trying to save another girl from getting harassed by a group of boys, got into a fight with them. The boys wanted revenge, and hence during the night, when Dolly and Nisha had gone for a walk, far away from the hostel, and when Dolly had gone to the restroom and Nisha was alone in the ground listening to music, the boys attacked her catching her unawares. She couldn't do anything." Dadi paused taking a breath. It was difficult for her to narrate the event. She realised how painful it would have been for Nisha to relive those moments all through her life. "She was tied up, blindfolded, pushed around like a toy, and pinned down..."

Vimla clapped her mouth in shock while Rupan shuddered. Viren stood stunned without movement.

"She fought hard, but she was outnumbered...But...Before anything more grave could happen, Nisha's principal arrived with the watchman and Nisha was saved. She was saved from physical attack at the right moment...but mentally, this event left a huge scar..." Dadi was in tears.

"And that little girl, never told any of us about this until few months back..." informed Dadaji. "And I forgot how the recent happenings could have affected her...I forgot how..."

Umesh sat down, still in shock. He had failed to understand his sister. He was the eldest and he never realised his sister was troubled in some way.

"Is that the reason why Nisha changed? Turned tomboyish?" asked Kirti still confused and unable to register whatever was said.

"Chachi told me, that Nisha had changed because she felt as a girl she is considered weak...She wanted to prove that she is as strong as men...That's why she used to wear boyish clothes...talk boldly and did a lot of other things...Always being ready to fight to prove her stand...That gave her the confidence to shun her past and look at her present..."

"She slowly changed because of Viraj..." told Dadi. "She loved him...the first guy she was attracted towards...Through him she understood all men aren't bad...Ramesh and Lakshmi allowed Nisha to face her first heartbreak too...They allowed Nisha to go through all the emotions knowing it would hurt her...But that was the only way for Nisha to learn and move on..."

"But why didn't Nisha tell all this to the family? Did Ramesh and Lakshmi know?" asked Viren.

Dadaji shook his head. "No! They didn't know too. It was during Jwala's tuition teacher problem when Nisha told her past...Ramesh was the last to know...Nisha's principal had scared her not to tell her parents as they would abandon her...and she being so little believed it."

"And this Press conference and marriage talks...and all the arguments and fights going on around her...and also the game you guys played unintentionally, brought out her past once again," said Dadi.

"That's why Ramesh and Lakshmi were hesitant and adamant to get Nisha married only when she wanted too? And this is the reason why Nisha never wanted to get married?" iterated Vimla.

"But why didn't you tell us?" demanded Sukku. "Why weren't we told?"

"Because Nisha didn't want to...She felt everyone would think her as weak," told Dolly.

"And even after knowing everything...You wanted Nisha to get married, Dadaji?" questioned Kirti bravely.

"This is ridiculous...Even Papa and Ma didn't tell me...I am her brother..." shouted Sukku unable to control himself. He ran upstairs strongly, to confront his parents. Jwala ran behind him, to stop him. Everyone looked up apprehensively, each lost in thoughts of their own. The turn of events was something no one expected. Each one remembered a time Nisha behaved strangely and now understood why. Everything fit perfectly now.

Sukku and Jwala reached Nisha's room and saw a panting Nisha being calmed down by Ramesh and Lakshmi. Sukku's anger instantly came down looking at the sight. He understood, it's not about him now. It's about Nisha. Jwala held his hand giving her support. They walked away leaving Nisha with the people whom she needed the most, her parents.

awesome shweta... i could imagine the scene right from rupan and viren confused to sukku running to confront ramesh... loved how dadaji was guilty... u always maintain the character's essence be it dadaji sukku or kirti... loved it...

Very well written. My eyes were moist while reading. This really was the one of the most important aspect of the show which I wished they didn't brush away so swiftly. I remember the solution was to "get a boyfriend, someone to love" as I recall to the best if my memory. I didn't think that was the solution, but went with it anyways 😕
