Nisha moved Ramesh was woken out of his trance. His tear fell on Nisha's hand and she moved. He was trying to give her strength by staying with her, but he couldn't disturb her sleep. So he kept her hand on the bed. But he couldn't let it go, he couldn't betray her. He sat on the bed besides Nisha. He cried, cried silently, he wanted to shout but he won't, he couldn't disturb her. His tears weren't there to dry, but they did, they dried. Those were the manifestations of his helplessness but he wasn't, he wasn't helpless.
The moon had hid in clouds the room became dark, Ramesh could relate to the dark, he was in dark, and light was needed. But there was a permanent eclipse on his life, he thought. He may have survived the darkness but didn't want it for his kids.
"If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Neither good nor bad exists it's all a lie, don't be fooled and fight for the truth. Truth will give you the relief you want, you deserve. But on the path don't close yourself, open yourself and embarrass the pain. Your journey will be much easier. Get up and run, run until you reach the Truth. Your reward awaits, your peace waits." The words of the sage echoed in his ears. The sage he met days when he was trying to battle the pain of Nisha's Past. He had come as a great relief and had given him the strength to fight for Nisha's happiness, fight for his truth, his life. But it again seemed distant, so far that it wasn't even visible. He was at crossroads again, no sight of his destination. All he had was his will, his faith, his family of 5 and his pain, the pain which was his companion, which had always walked hand in hand with him. He was clueless but no clue was stronger than his will. He was to get to truth back, his happy waala Gaana was to be happy again.
"What are you thinking, Ramesh? Come out of the room let Nisha have some rest." Speaking in a hushed up voice was Lakshmi, standing in the gate, the light wasn't enough to reveal the lines of dried tears. But there isn't enough dark in this world to hide her sobbing heart.
"Lakshmi I can't leave her. Don't you know she needs me; we can't leave her at this moment. Parents don't leave their children at a moment they are required the most. And you shouldn't worry about her sleep, I can't disturb her rest" She may have missed the irony in Ramesh's sad smile, but Lakshmi didn't miss the words of his.
" Is this the moment we are required the most, is this the moment we wanted Nisha ask for our hand, Is this the moment we want Nisha to pour her heart in front of them. Yes this was the moment, but what if she had asked for their hand before all this could have happened. Have we failed as being her friends, have we failed to make Nisha trust us, have we been unable to guard Nisha, have we failed as parents" Lakshmi sighed while sitting on the empty chair besides Nisha's bed. She couldn't gather the courage required to voice her thoughts. It would have broken Ramesh from Inside.
"Why does it happen to our daughter? Has she inherited our ill-fate? Are my mistakes making her suffer? Bunty, Sukku and Nisha all three are ill-treated in the house, all three are considered trouble creators, all the three are made scapegoats and when they need support all they get is taunts and punishments. Bauji just wants to use them, use them against me. Is my failure harming them? No one wants to support her; all they know is how to insult them. No one wants to look at what Nisha is suffering. Umesh, Dolly, Kirti, Jwala all support Nisha but my brothers are only ready to insult Nisha, ask questions and demand apologies." Ramesh just couldn't continue, no pain was enough for him to insult his brothers and question his relation with them. Lakshmi knew it but the questioning eyes of his, visible in the moon light said it all. And before he could say any further, Lakshmi interrupted "Don't say it Ramesh. It's not wrong to think that. They love Nisha as much as we do, Just that they think unlike us. But you can't question their love, it isn't very unlike us."
"I can't question their love for them, but I question myself. Have I failed as a father, or have we failed as parents" Even Ramesh couldn't believe he asked this, but it was a question they needed an answer to.
Lakshmi couldn't have been quicker shake her head in disagreement, "No, Ramesh. We haven't failed, circumstances have failed us. But I promise Nisha will be over this. This room was full of darkness moments ago, clouds had covered the moon, but the clouds are scattered now, light has won. Hope will win." She said as confidently as she could but her the words she couldn't dare to say were spoken by Ramesh. Their thought met but this time she didn't ask for it. Ramesh was questioning their parenting; she couldn't allow him to continue doing so. But she also couldn't leave the doubt herself. Her inner turmoil was killing her, only Nisha could calm her. She desperately wanted to hear, "Lakshmi Relax me." But she couldn't be selfish; she couldn't put her pain before Nisha's.
"But, Now what should we do?" Lakshmi said as she ran her fingers through Nisha's hair.
"Nisha has seen enough we can't let her suffer more, I can't let her life to be destroyed. I will do whatever it takes. But first we need to do something so that she forgets the incident." Ramesh tried to be something, he wasn't. He was trying to be strong and give strength to Lakshmi, but he wasn't strong enough, wasn't strong enough to bear the pain of his children. For his own life he was ready to face anything. But he couldn't see tears in Nisha's eyes.
"Now what should we do?" Lakshmi repeated. Her body was there in the room, but not her mind. She was lost, lost in the pain her daughter was suffering. She was suffering a lot more not less. Ramesh couldn't control but cry and say, "Lakshmi" he said, his voice cracking. Lakshmi looked at him, closed her eyes and said, "Ramesh, I don't know what we can do. But you can expect me to stand by your side whatever happens. Till we are there no one would harm Nisha." She was broken, he was broken but together they were unbreakable, together they were there for Nisha. "Nisha wouldn't be harmed" Both spoke in unison as Lakshmi kept her hand on Nisha's hand that Ramesh was holding.
