Why is Sunjay shown in this manner?

Hello Navya fans! I'm a new member to Navya's forum. I've been a silent reader since a week. My mum started watching the show since it started though, and recommended it to me and I think it's a great portrayal of the youth in India today. I love the simplicity of the show, and I guess this itself will attract a lot more viewers and fans to watch Navya!

Anyway, getting to the point - I've noticed that Nimisha's dad, who's called Sunjay is shown in a low hierarchy in Anant's family. There are loads of examples that show he's looked down on by everybody in the family, even his own wife. I do not know the reason behind this as I've not watched every single episode of it yet.

First example of this is when a few episodes ago; Anant's sister-in-law was talking to Anant's brother and said to him "It's difficult to tell the difference family members and servents in this house, for some" -Obviously talking about Sunjay who was gardening near her bedroom window. Her husband's reaction clearly showed he felt bad for Sunjay who's his uncle and was disgusted at his own wife's comment. This shows how Anant's sister-in-law doesn't think much of Sunjay dispite also being her uncle.

The second example is of Sunjay's wife, when a few days ago he asked his wife if she bought any "sauf" and she said to him "I asked the servant to buy it way before you would, too bad they don't pay attention to any of your needs". This also shows how Sunjay's wife knows and also thinks that Sunjay has a lower stature in the family (even though this isn't normally possible because most families treat each other equally). Sunjay's wife also implies that not even servants care about what his needs are, so why would other family members care? This is when Nimisha walks into the scene - giving Sunjay the "sauf" she bought for him, and Sunjay says "she cares"

The third example is from today's episode itself. The whole family is discussing regarding presents they want to send guests along with the invitation card and when Sunjay suggests to Baba that according to him sending gold coins with the invitation cards are a waste of money, the money could be donated for the poor to eat instead - this would be a better use of the money. To this, Baba takes ofence and says "Now you're going to tell me how and where I should spend my money!? Could I ask you where you spend all your money??" this directly insults Sunjay as Baba implies that he cannot afford to buy luxuries for his daughter so he shouldn't stop others in the family from doing so. Further more, when Sunjay explains his reason of wanting his family to set a better example to the community by carried out a simple wedding would make people think of them in an even better manner than they already do, and to this Baba says in a sarcastic manner "Of course, showing them that we're stingy and the father of the bride cannot wed his daughter in a lavish ceremony and also insulting ourselfs in front of Nimisha's groom's family" again, this is a direct insult to Sunjay, it shows us how Baba doesn't think much of his son!

The fourth example is also from today's episode, following from the previous scene - when all that occurs, Sunjay's wife decides to walk out instead of supporting him, this also shows how Sunjay's wife thinks of him in a lower hierarchy in the family. But Baba tells hers that they're discussing about her daughter's wedding and she should not go from there like that and stops her from leaving. Indirectly showing Sunjay that she would listen to him but not her own husband as his speach doesn't really have any authority in the family.

The fifth example is also from today's episode. Anant joyfully comes into the discussion telling Baba that he thinks that he did very well in his exams and will make him proud by gaining great results when the results come out in 4 or 5 days - to which Baba says "You're the worthy son of this family" whilst looking at Sunjay, as if indirectly calling Sunjay "unworthy" and a "loser" - this is also an insult to him.

These many examples that I've bought to you show that not many family members think much of Sunjay.

...So the BIG question is WHY? -Is there any reason that he's shown in a lower position in the family compared to others in Anant's family? I was thinking maybe because his heir is a daughter unlike Anant's father Om, who gave the family two male heirs? After-all Anant's family is very conservative and traditional and somewhat orthodox minded.

Let me know what you think is the matter behind this awful behavior from everyone towards Sunjay. I personally think it's very unfair no matter what the reason behind it may be.

Hey Radhika,

I think this issue has been on the minds of many. From what I understand, the reason why Sunjay is treated the way he is has not been revealed to us yet. There has been hints that Sunjay may be writer; his wife once said that he always stays in the world of his books and never lives in the reality. It has also been hinted that he is not a conformist and decided not to follow Baba's wishes.

I think we're all in the same boat when it comes to understanding Sunjay. The story is still developing so keep watching! All will be revealed :)

Hey Radhika, firstly welcome to the forum.
About your question,I think its just becoz his simplicity is a misfit in running the family business. He finds pleasure in little things such as gardening or reading books!
he seems to be a person who believes in basic needs and wants to help mankind more than displaying the wealth. We saw his good side today wen he thinks that distributing gold coins is a waste of money and rather helping poor people is a better option. Such thoughts are overshadowed in the greedy world of prestige, money and showoff. And i think his nature is not wat his dad or brother agree to!
And like anushka mentioned, maybe there might be a hidden reason too...that has yet not been revealed. But till now I feel that he is a misfit in the family..and thats why he is treated the way he is!I pity his wife too!!!

Verry truee Radhikaa.. i noticed the same thingg but the main thing pop up in my mind is that Anant's family is vry consarvative n all understood that but another hand y Anant's Grand father n Aunt n most of everybody in his family treating both brother different ways well wutever is reason behind is..
Another example.. Anant and His Sister Nandani ..HIs Grand father being big Saint(wutever) of Lord Shiva...IS he just pretending like that or wut? earlier in one the episode he talked abt all manners of todaii's generation.. talk all sAnskarr n all but i ddin't understand that he can teach to other abt sanskar y he is treating one son's fmaily very nicely n treatig other's family like a seevernt ... is he jsut want to show ppl by giveing awyas gold coins with invitations (( like come on who does that)) no1 even asking the her parents how they wana thier daughter;s wedding ... (( i was puuling my hairs thhat time shouldn't a give have any choice she is only 17 n not even mutuer enough to get married... y can;t she do her studies like Ananat ))..this so unfairr.. i dont belive it comeon..which century r they living in??yahh this is all for thier security but still they should treat son n daughter equally...

anyways guys sorrry give big lecture ...
Let's c how Anant and Navya's love story go can't wait for "" My Heart IS gone Dhin Tannaaa""" love is wut cute couple !!!!
