CHAPTER 12

B: What? Marriage?

Amma: Yes marriage. And you will not argue Bella. You have committed a grave mistake and now you will face the consequences. We will call panditji tomorrow and ask him to look for a nearest mahurat. Till then you both will not meet each other nor will you speak with each other. Got it? Now you can go and sleep.

Saying this she went to her room. Appa took Mahir up to his room and Sumi ma took Bella to her room. They were going to sleep in Rehan and Kuhu's bed respectively till marriage. Kuhu and Rehan went to their bedroom. Left with no other option, they went back to their respective rooms.

B: Sumi ma, please trust me. Nothing happened. I am not pregnant.

Sumi ma: Bella, see I know why you wanted to hide this from us but now that you are pregnant, we can't ignore that. It is the question of your whole life. As your mother, Gayatri has a duty to fulfil. Even I have a duty to fulfil.

B: But ma, we didn't do anything. Mahir is an idiot. He is talking nonsense. Please trust me once.

Sumi ma: Go to sleep Bella, we have to go shopping tomorrow.

Bella sighed. She was not able to get through to ma at all. Amma Appa were very angry. She was not allowed to speak with Mahir. And anyways that idiot was not of any use to her right now, not when he himself believed that he was at fault. She decided to sleep on it and then do something in the morning. Her last hope was Rehan and Kuhu. She hoped that at least they would believe her.

Next morning when Appa woke up, he saw that Mahir was fast asleep. So he went back to his room to get ready. Sumi ma did the same. Now Mahir and Bella were all alone in their rooms. Bella saw this as an opportunity to go and meet Mahir. Their rooms were interconnected by a common door. When they were kids that door would be left open. But now that door was shut. She knocked on the door, hoping that Mahir would wake up. Mahir was already awake. When he heard the knocking he went and opened that door. Bella had already locked her door from inside so that no one could come in from that door. Now she did the same to Mahir's door. Having secured that, she turned to him.

B: Now what my soon to be husband?

M: Bella they are in a way right. But it is not fair for you to suffer.

B: Mahir, I am tired of explaining this to you, I am not pregnant. I thought you would probably help me in convincing them otherwise but it's clear that even you want this marriage to happen. So there is no point in talking to you.

M: Bella please, I don't want to get married to you but I know that is the right thing to do.

B: Fine. I can see that I am alone in this. Go and shop for your wedding clothes Mr. Bridegroom. I will ensure that this marriage never happens.

Saying this she walked out of the room. First thing she did was to go and meet Rehan and Kuhu and tried to convince them to try and stop the wedding. But they both were reluctant as even they believed that she was pregnant and that marriage was the right step for her. She gave up after a while. Just as she was about leave, Rehan commented that the way to stop this wedding is to prove that she is not pregnant. Bella did not want to give any pregnancy test. She found it extremely degrading. If only hope was that her periods would start, then everything would get sorted but even her body had stopped supporting her.

That day was a Saturday; so no office. Everyone was busy preparing for BeHir's wedding. Panditji came and said that according to their kundalis, they were made for each other. Theirs was such a pair that even if they got married on a no moon night, their marriage would be successful. Even amavas will not be able to cast an ill omen on them. Bella rolled her eyes at this. Suck up' she thought. Even Mahir was looking sceptical at this particular bit, but he didn't say anything.

After panditji said that coming Friday was perfect day for them to get married, everyone went into tizzy. BeHir were simply mute spectators to all this excitement. So the functions were decided as follows:

Monday- Engagement

Tuesday- Haldi

Wednesday- Mehendi

Thursday- Sangeet

Friday-Wedding

All this time Bella was praying with all her might for her periods to start. But as the day progressed and there was still no sign of her monthly blood, she began to get desperate. They went shopping that day. Now that they were sure that BeHir were not going to create any problems, everyone was behaving in a perfectly normal way with them. They bought engagement rings for each other, then shopped for jewellery for everyone. Kuhu had promised to give designs from her unreleased collection for Bella to wear for each of her wedding functions. So they only shopped for Mahir's clothes and bought some sarees for Bella, and also bought clothes for everyone else. Sumi ma called up her parents and invited them for the wedding. She knew they would not come, but she did her duty.

When Amma mentioned calling pati and athai for the wedding, Bella put her foot down.

B: Amma, if these people come to my wedding then I will not get married. I will run away. I don't want these people coming and spoiling the mood for everyone, especially you. Anyways they don't consider me and Rehan as a part of their family then why should I invite them to my wedding?

Amma: Bella it will not look nice...

B: Amma, do you like being insulted by them?

Appa: She is right Gayatri, my mother and sisters have never considered Bella and Rehan as their family, then why should they be present for her wedding?

Amma had given up after that. Sumi ma insisted on inviting Andy and Polo for the wedding as it was Andy's right as Mahir's father. BeHir tried to pretest, but she was adamant so nothing could be done about it. With everything falling in place so smoothly, Bella knew only way to prove that she was not pregnant was to take a pregnancy test. That night she went to Kuhu and told her

B: That's it. I am ready to take the pregnancy test. I want to end this chapter once and for all. Tomorrow morning I will go and buy two tests. For double confirmation.

R: Bella you don't go, Kuhu will go. She is married; it will not seem so odd if she buys it.

B: Fine. Good night.

When Bella returned to her room, she saw Mahir waiting for her.

B: What are you doing here? Sumi ma will be here any moment.

M: I am here with her permission.

B: Oh yeah? And what do you want?

M: I bought something for you. Here, take this.

He handed a beautifully wrapped box. She opened it to find some very soft maternity gowns inside. She felt herself blushing.

B: And what is this?

M: I read that you will need it.

B: When I become fat?

M: What? No!! I read about it on the net. You will need loose, airy and soft clothes when you will blow up after some months.

B: Yes I will need them when I will become fat, right?

M: No Bella.

B: Out of all things that you could have bought for me, you bought maternity gowns for me. Like really? When I prove that I am not pregnant, you will buy a diamond necklace for me got it?

Just then Sumi ma entered the room.

Sumi ma: Mahir, your ten minutes are up. Go now.

B: Don't worry. When all of this over; even Sumi ma will not be able to save you from me. Good night.

Next day was Sunday; before breakfast Kuhu went and bought a pregnancy test kit. Bella called everyone to the living room and told them of her decision to take a pregnancy test.

She went inside the bathroom and read the instruction manual very carefully; when she came out everyone was waiting for her with bated breath. Once the three minutes were up, the test showed negative test results.

That means Bella was not pregnant.
