Hello Mr.Nishnesh,

This is mainly a Music Forum, dedicated to music composers / music directors, and Singers.

Please note that if you want to post songs by any film directors, producers etc, please post those in the Bollywood Forum. That is the right place for such commemorative threads and posts.

This entire forum is dedicated to music and music-related articles.

We appreciate your post on music director Jaydev is appropriate, and we value your effort in reminding us of these singers' and directors' significant dates. Thank you very much.

If you post any article or song other than a music-related one, we'd prefer to move it to the Bollywood forum, or we'll delete it. Please note this.

Vying for Vintage

Actors are fine - like I've explained in the first post, they are the 'face' of the song and perform it on screen so we can commemorate them with the songs that are picturized on them. But keep in mind that there must be some songs that you can post for them.

But if you want to post movie producers/ directors etc, it's best to stick to the movie forum that is Bollywood forum.

Thank you for remembering C. Ramchandra, one of Hindi film's greatest composers in the Golden Era.

He was not just an accomplished composer but a prolific one too. There's a story that goes about how Naushad was approached by the producer for Azaad (1955) and asked to compose 10 songs in a month. Naushad, miffed, replied that he was not a music factory and would not do it. The producer then went to CR who delivered the songs without compromising on quality! Who can forget Kitna haseen hai mausam, Radha na bole, Aplam chaplam, Dekho ji bahar aayi, Ja ri ja ri o kaari badariya, Kitni jawan hai raat ... Such a fab soundtrack!

CR actually started his career in Tamil films and composed the famous Kannum Kannum Kalanthu from the film Vanji Kottai Valiban, the song that featured the famous dance duet/ competition between two virtuoso dancers - Vyjayanthimala & Padmini.

Though Albela and later Navrang are his most cherished soundtracks, imo, CR's greatest soundtrack is Anarkali (1953). Known for usually frothy numbers, the songs in Anarkali veer off the beaten path and deliver a gravitas that simply touches the soul. Save for one song - Aa Jaan-e-wafa - he composed the entire soundtrack.

Here is a wonderful Lata - Hemant Kumar duet in Raag Bageshri. Lyrics are by his staple song-writing partner, Rajinder Krishen.

Another favorite CR song is this one, the lyrics by Rajinder Krishen are so fun and Rafi and Chitalkar (CR himself) playback for Yakub and Gope who keep up the on-screen shenanigans and priceless expressions!

I also love the Talat-Lata duet - Mohabbat mein aise zamane bhi aaye from this movie.

Haseenon ki gaadi mein

Film: Sagai (1951)

CR did not use Rafi much, he was known to prefer male singing voices similar to his own so he mostly went with Talat. This is one of the rare Rafi tracks under his baton.

Talat was CR's most utilized male voice (when he wasn't playing back himself) and there are scores of Talat-CR songs to pick from, but I simply love this one from Parchhain (1952). Lyrics are by Noor Lucknowi.

What are your favorite CR songs?

A wonderful informative write up.

It is a bit difficult to pick a single favourite songs from this prolific composers work. but I will try to list some over the next few days and will try and ignore the songs that are popular to this day.

Bharosa Na Kar Daulat par from 1949 Sipahiya , sung by Lata and written by Rajinder Krishan.
