@ Bold This tune is actually lifted from Malaika nakupenda Malaika, a Swahili song written by Kenyan musician, Fadhili Williams. The most popular version of it has been sung by Miriam Makeba and Harry Belafonte.

Thank you for remembering C. Ramchandra, one of Hindi film's greatest composers in the Golden Era.

He was not just an accomplished composer but a prolific one too. There's a story that goes about how Naushad was approached by the producer for Azaad (1955) and asked to compose 10 songs in a month. Naushad, miffed, replied that he was not a music factory and would not do it. The producer then went to CR who delivered the songs without compromising on quality! Who can forget Kitna haseen hai mausam, Radha na bole, Aplam chaplam, Dekho ji bahar aayi, Ja ri ja ri o kaari badariya, Kitni jawan hai raat ... Such a fab soundtrack!

CR actually started his career in Tamil films and composed the famous Kannum Kannum Kalanthu from the film Vanji Kottai Valiban, the song that featured the famous dance duet/ competition between two virtuoso dancers - Vyjayanthimala & Padmini.

Though Albela and later Navrang are his most cherished soundtracks, imo, CR's greatest soundtrack is Anarkali (1953). Known for usually frothy numbers, the songs in Anarkali veer off the beaten path and deliver a gravitas that simply touches the soul. Save for one song - Aa Jaan-e-wafa - he composed the entire soundtrack.

Here is a wonderful Lata - Hemant Kumar duet in Raag Bageshri. Lyrics are by his staple song-writing partner, Rajinder Krishen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ki8ChPsYeJU

Another favorite CR song is this one, the lyrics by Rajinder Krishen are so fun and Rafi and Chitalkar (CR himself) playback for Yakub and Gope who keep up the on-screen shenanigans and priceless expressions!

I also love the Talat-Lata duet - Mohabbat mein aise zamane bhi aaye from this movie.

Haseenon ki gaadi mein

Film: Sagai (1951)

CR did not use Rafi much, he was known to prefer male singing voices similar to his own so he mostly went with Talat. This is one of the rare Rafi tracks under his baton.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oa8MwCn2_iU

Talat was CR's most utilized male voice (when he wasn't playing back himself) and there are scores of Talat-CR songs to pick from, but I simply love this one from Parchhain (1952). Lyrics are by Noor Lucknowi.

Tribute to music composer C. Ramachandra on his Death Anniversary (5th January).....by Bhim Raj Garg

Music Director C Ramchandra: The Fastest Deliveryboy of Magical Melodies

A creative genius, C. Ramchandra came to the city of dreams to become an actor, did only some cameos and vanished from the acting field. However, he continued to struggle and became a famous music director. He was a pioneer and trendsetter, whose mellifluous music left an indelible imprint on listener’s mind. He was brilliantly versatile, having composed music for peppy club songs to lullabies to ghazals and lilting love songs. His creativity, variety and flair for composing simple tunes without getting overly obsessed with classical music, reflected his flamboyant personality. He composed numerous juvenile songs depicting raucous and joyful mood, mostly picturised on the raunchy comedy team of Yakub and Gope. He gave playback as Chitalkar, while scoring music he adopted many names like Anna Sahib, Ram Chitalkar, P Ramakant, C Ramachandra and Shyamoo.

C. Ramchandra was born as Ramachandra Narhar Chitalkar in Puntambe village (Ahmednagar), on January 12, 1918 in a typical Marathi Brahmin family. As a child his ambition was to become a soldier or a musician. He was admitted in Vinayak Rao Patwardhan’s Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. He learnt classical music for six years under Sri Shankerrao Sapre. At the age of ten he played the harmonium like a prodigy. He turned out to be poor in academics and could get education upto ninth standard. Contrary to the wishes of his family, he decided to pursue his twin loves Music and Cinema.

C. Ramchandra, a devilishly handsome man with 6 feet of height and a spate of curly hair, got the role of an extra in Lalit Pictures. He played some itsy-bitsy characters with a paltry salary of Rs 50. Soon he bagged the lead role in Hindi film Naganand (1935). The film flopped as its first show had only 7 cinegoers in the audience. His subsequent films Said-e-Hawas (1936) and Atma Tarang (1937) also failed to uplift his acting career. He realised that acting was not his forte and he decided to showcase his music talent.

What are your favorite CR songs?

You should listen to his songs with your heart, visualize those in your thoughts, and indulge in his soul-stirring music, which takes you to another enchanting world!

C Ramchandra was famous for his classical raga-based songs. He garnered unconquerable fame for his classic tunes. His biggest success as a music composer was the 1953 movie Anarkali, it was a super hit mainly because of the melodious songs of that movie.

C Ramchandra composed the very popular patriotic song "Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon," which was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and written by poet Pradeep. Later, on Republic Day of 1963, Lata Mangeshkar gave a live performance of it at the National Stadium in New Delhi, where Jawaharlal Nehru was present. Jawaharlal Nehru is reported to have become so emotional that tears streamed down his face! It is regarded as one of Lata's crown jewels!

Ramchandra's memorable musical score for Padmini and Vyjayanthimala for their dance duel in "Aaja Tu Raja Aaja" from Raj Tilak (1958) written by P. L. Santoshi , Asha Bhosle and Sudha Malhotra rendered their voice.

My all-time favourite songs are --

3 Aaja Tu Raja Aaja Mausam-E-Bahar Hai
