Today is jan 9, death anniversary of of Qamar jalakabadi ( Formarly omprakash bhandari)

As a lyricist, Qamar Jalalabadi was very versatile. On one hand he wrote mesmeric duets like "Sun Meri Saanwari Mujhko Kahin Tum Bhool Na Jaana…" sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi (film: Aansoo 1953) and on the other hand he penned comic relief songs like "Khush Hai Zamana Aaj Pehli Tarikh Hai" endured with full throttle gusto by Kishore Kumar (film: Pehli Tarikh-1954). This song turned into veritable anthem and was played on Radio Ceylon ❤️on the first of every month for decades, and it probably still is.

The film Howrah Bridge (1958) skyrocketed his career as lyricist to unprecedented heights. Songs like "Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu" (Geeta Dutt) and "Aaiye Meherbaan, Baithiye Jaanejaan…." (Asha Bhosle) became highly popular.

Page # 2 on Qmar Jalalabadi

Cont'd..

Below article from Seniors.in

Full credit to them for that list of 10 songs

10 glorious Qamar Jalalabadi songs

Om Prakash Bhandari, better known as Qamar Jalalabadi, wrote some brilliant songs during the Golden Era of Hindi film music. Yet, he remains largely underrated as a lyricist.

Each of the 10 songs chosen below is a gem. Jalalabadi’s death anniversary is on jan 8 and this chronological list celebrates his genius.

1 O Door Jaanewale – Pyar Ki Jeet (1948)

This was one of singer-actress Suraiya’s biggest hits in the late 1940s. It was composed by Husnlal-Bhagatram and had the theme of longing. Jalalabadi wrote, “O door jaane waale, vaada na bhool jaana, raatein hui andheri, tum chaand banke aana”.

2 Woh Paas Rahe Ya Door – Badi Behen (1949)

The combination of Suraiya, Husnlal-Bhagatram and Jalalabadi again worked wonders in this song filmed on Suraiya and Rehman. The words were, “Woh paas rahe ya door rahe, nazron mein samaaye rehte hain, itna toh bata do koi hamein, kya pyaar isiko kehte hain”.

3 Raahi Matwale – Waris (1954)

Filmed on and sung by Talat Mahmood and Suraiya, this evergreen composition by Anil Biswas was based on a Rabindra Sangeet tune. The lyrics were, “Raahi matwale, tu chhed ik baar, mann ka sitar, jaane kab chori chori aayi hai bahaar”. It was shot on a train journey.

4 Mohabbat Zinda Rehti Hai – Changez Khan (1957)

Hansraj Behl composed this sad song sung by Mohammed Rafi. Premnath played Changez Khan and the heroine was Bina Rai. Jalalabadi’s lyrics were, “Mohabbat zinda rehti hai, mohabbat mar nahin sakti: Aji insaan kya yeh toh khuda se dar nahin sakti”.

5 Aaiye Meherbaan – Howrah Bridge (1958)

One of the most stunning songs picturised on Madhubala, it was a big hit for Asha Bhosle. O.P. Nayyar was the music director, and the main lines were, “Aaiye meherbaan, baithiye jaane–jaan, shauq se leejiye ji, ishq ki imtihaan”. Ashok Kumar and K.N. Singh also appeared on screen.

6 Ek Pardesi Mera Dil Le Gaya – Phagun (1958)

O.P. Nayyar began with a snake charmer’s tune in this well-choreographed song featuring Bharat Bhushan and Madhubala. Rafi and Asha were in duet. The song went, “Ek pardesi mera dil le gaya, jaate jaate meetha meetha gham de gaya; Kaun pardesi tera dil le gaya, moti moti akhiyon mein aansoon de gaya”.

7 Chhalia Mera Naam – Chhalia (1960)

Jalalabadi wrote the unforgettable limes, “Chhalia mera naam, chhalia mera naam, Hindu Muslim Sikh Isaai sabko mera salaam”. Filmed on Raj Kapoor, it was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji and sung by Mukesh. Even today, it is sung regularly at shows held in memory of the singer.

8 Tu Hai Mera Prem Devta – Kalpana (1960)

Manna Dey and Rafi got together on this gem filmed on a classical dance by Padmini and Ragini. O.P. Nayyar gave the music based on raag Lalit. The lyrics were, “Tu hai mera prem devta, in charanon ki daasi hoon main, man ki pyaas bujhaane aaye, antargat tak pyaasi hoon main”.

9 Yeh Kaisi Ajab Dastaan – Rustom Sohrab (1963)

It was a classic in every sense, with Jalalabadi writing, “Yeh kaisi ajab dastaan ho gayee hai, chupaate chupaate bayaan ho gayee hai”. Sajjad Hussain provided the music. It was Suraiya’s last film as actress and singer, and Prithviraj Kapoor was the main lead.

10 Donon Ne Kiya Tha Pyaar Magar – Mahua (1969)

A sad song sung by Rafi, it was filmed on Shiv Kumar and Anjana Mumtaz. Music was by Sonik-Omi. Jalalabadi touched a chord with the words, “Donon ne kiya tha pyaar magar, mujhe yaad raha tu bhool gayee; Maine tere liye re jag chhoda, tu mujhko chhod chali”.

Despite his skills and versatility, Jalalabadi did not get much work with the mainline music directors

What is your Favorite song of lyricist Qamar Jalalabadi?

Qamar Jalalabadi - I confess he's not the first lyricist that comes to mind when I think of the lyricists from that era and there were so many stellar ones. Nevertheless, he's every bit as worthy. I missed posting songs for Neeraj, and I'm always saying how lyricists are overlooked so I ought to practice what I preach, right?

I first became aware of Qamar Jalalabadi while commenting on how hilarious this song and it's lyrics were. At first, I thought it would be by Majrooh or OPN"s staple partner, S.H. Bihari. Then I discovered it's by QJ. The lyrics are an absolute hoot, and & I never fail to cackle at the way he rhymed namaskaram, & pyaram and bedapaaram....and then the clever way he wove Padmini and Kishore Kumar's real names into the song!

Sach poocho toh mere dil mein pyaar ille ille

O Bangali mera ho ja kehti hai Miss Pillai

Pappi tujhe pukarti Gangoli yaaram

Mera ho ja sajna phir bedapaaram

Main Bangali Chokra

Film: Raagini (1958)

Music: O.P. Nayyar

Singers: Kishore Kumar & Asha Bhosle

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8x2MqmcymRg

Then coming to this song... ahhh it has my heart. Talat's vocals are gorgeous (as is he) and the music by Anil Biswas and the way he uses the instruments to simulate the sound of a moving train deserves all the awards!

And the lyrics are like icing on a cake!

Dekh dekh chakori ka mann hua chanchal

Chanda ke mukhde pe badli ka anchal (I love how he rhymes this instead of saying aanchal)

Kabhi chhupe kabhi khile roop ka nikhaar

Raahi matwale

Film : Waris (1954)

Music: Anil Biswas

Singers: Talat Mehmood & Suraiyya

This album has some stunning tracks but somehow this one stands out for me. Maybe it's the music (qawwali) or the yearning in Rafi & Mannada's voices as they sing this song of longing along with Saadat Khan.

I love these lines! (lutf = enjoyment/ pleasure)

Kya lutf aa raha tha, dilbar ki dillagi se

nazrein bhi thi mujhi par, parda bhi tha mujhi se

kya haseen tasveer thi allah kasam

Phir tumhari yaad aayi ae sanam

Film: Rustom Sohrab (1963)

Music: Sajjad Hussain

Singers: Mohammed Rafi, Mannadey, Saadat Khan

More Qamar Jalalabadi because I simply have to post these songs.

Such beautiful, beautiful songs and the way they are rendered. Uff! smiley19 No words! QJ's lyrics shine.

Rafi & Lata have sung so many wonderful songs together & it's impossible to pick, but when I think of compiling a top duets list, this song always makes it!

Sun mere sajna re

Film: Aansoo (1953)

Music: Husnlal Bhagatram

Singers: Rafi & Lata

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9jJl7ljsN4

Similarly, these two songs. It would be impossible to make a top anything Lata list but I think these two songs would feature in mine.

Sajan ki galiyan chhod chale

Film: Bazar (1949)

Music: Shyam Sunder

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

What a beautiful, beautiful composition and so exquisitely rendered by Lata smiley19

Jab raat nahi kat ti

Film: Changez Khan (1957)

Music: Hansraj Behl

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

Just listen to the incredible pitch Lata goes to in the antara! Soul shattering!

The first stanza echoes the sentiments expressed in another popular song - Chingari koi bhadke

Jo aag lagi dil mein,

ashqon ne bujhaai hai,

ashqon ne jo bhadkaai aag

woh kaise bujhegi

Today, Jan 10, is the 84th Birthday of a brilliant singer who is often said to have the very divinity residing in his voice. If it's true music transcends all boundaries and barriers, then Yesudas is a true example of it.

Kattassery Joseph Yesudas, a cultural icon in Kerala where he hails from, is known as Gaanagandharvan (The celestial singer) or more fondly by his fans as Dasettan. Born in a Latin Catholic Christian family, KJY not only mastered the staunchly Hindu devotional Carnatic music but became revered as one of the strongest exponents of it. He is also known to have sung Arabic hymns in Carnatic style!

Though more popular in the South, Yesudas did have some notable Hindi hits particularly those he sang for Salil Chowdhary and Ravindra Jain. Ravindra Jain, who was blind, is quoted as having said that if he ever got his sight back, the first person he'd like to see would be Yesudas.

In the South, he has sung in all major languages and for most music composers. He has stated his musical heroes to be Mohammed Rafi (I listened to his rendition of O duniya ke rakhwale and I have to say he got all the emotions right), Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar and Dr. M. Balamurali Krishna (Carnatic vocalists).

Sadly, he was under -utilized in Hindi films.

Posting some of my favorite KJY Hindi songs first

Chand jaise mukhde pe

Film: Sawan ko aane do (1979)

Music: Rajkamal

Lyrics: Indeevar

Film: Anand Mahal (1977)

Music: Salil Chowdhary

Lyrics: Yogesh

Who can forget Chitchor? What songs!

Jab deep jale aana (with Hemlata)

Film: Chitchor (1976)

Music & Lyrics: Ravindra Jain
