Raji, I had no idea there was a Telugu song based on 'Aaja tujhko pukare mere geet re, mere mitwa'. Rafi sounds so different here! Is his Telugu diction up to par?

Lizzie, you've posed an intriguing question. Because of the songs in this film, I began to dislike Rafi.Originally posted by: LizzieBennet

Later, when I heard his legendary songs like 'chal ud jaa re panchi,' 'Madhuban me Radhika,' and many more, I began to like his voice. He is not a mediocre singer; rather, he is one of the most successful and great singers in the Hindi film industry.
But I must point out one thing, Lata's song in one of the old Telugu films, Sansaram was a super hit song. She has taken great care with her diction and pronunciation; it sounds as if a local singer performed it with such authority, and it has been a major, phenomenal hit song till today!!!! ' Niddura pora tammuda'
Song :nirdhan ka ghar lootne waalon...insaan bano ..
Movie : Baiju Baawraa(1952) ,
Singer : Mohammad Rafi,
LyricIst : Shakeel Badayuni,
Music Director :Naushad,
Cast Bharat Bhushan,Meena Kumari,
,Director : Vijay Bhatt
It’s hard for singers to get the diction right especially when the language is very different from what they’re used to. I recall Lata’s diction in Satya’s Valaiosai, Ilaya Raja’s Tamil song and it wasn’t up to par at all. Her singing was pitch perfect though. Naushad wasn’t too pleased with her Urdu diction and she had to take lessons to get it right.Originally posted by: Viswasruti

I’m glad your friend convinced you to listen to more Rafi. For me, he’s an impeccable singer. In fact, in many duets with Lata, (Tasveer teri dil mein comes to mind)- i prefer his rendition. Ehsaan tera hoga as well. It maybe something to do with the pitch but there it is. Diction doesn’t bother me as much as the singing itself. And there Rafi can do no wrong. This song you posted- Insaan Bano- is one of my eternal favorites by him. The way he sings the line-‘Khud paap karo naam ho shaitaan ka badnaam’ brings instant tears. His voice is like an arrow piercing the soul direct. It may have something to do with the fact that he was my father’s favorite and I grew up listening to his voice. So many of the songs I love have been sung by him. Of course, he has sung some bad songs too. Who hasn’t? That doesn’t take away from his prowess though.
Riya and Madhu,
First of all, I did not read the line " post your favourite Rafi songs".
I was just looking for something different and posted this Telugu song.
Apparently, Rafi sung in 3 or 4 Telugu movies.
Coming to diction, yes, when singers sing songs in unfamiliar languages, it can never be on par.
I am not sure how many agree with me, but, I feel female artists do a better job compared to male singers when signing in unfamiliar languages.
Rafi sung so many gems in his career. There is no doubt and many of them were already posted too.
Cheers..
I fully agree with you, Raji.Originally posted by: Savera84

I agree, Rafi fared not so well in this Telugu movie, and I have no idea about his other movie songs.
