On the other hand, when we speak of Rafi- Lata, Lata Mangeshkar has always been effusive in praise for Rafi despite their famous disagreement on the Royalty issue that led to them not speaking & singing together for over 4 years until S.D. Burman bartered peace between them or so Lata has said - but some places report it as Jaikishen. Lata has called Rafi 'Devta aadmi' and 'Sant aadmi' and said openly that he did not have any vices.
They are truly the stuff of legend. They were so attuned to one another and seemed to challenge each other when they sang together. Each knew what the other was capable of and they did not hold back. Rafi-Lata together created something magical that I believe cannot ever be replicated.

This is one of the songs that added to that rift I believe. Lata was said to have not liked the way Rafi sang a particular line and had brought it up with Salilda who was a known Lata loyalist and sided with her, a fact that miffed Rafi. Salil Chowdhary was known to have preferred other male singers to Rafi - like Talat and Mukesh but nonetheless I love Rafi's rendition in this song. Makes me wish Salilda and Rafi had worked more together.

Naushad, on the other hand, was a kattar Rafian. He wouldn't even consider any other male singer if Rafi was available. His early days of working with Talat and Mukesh came to an end very quickly and he switched to the Rafi camp and stayed there firmly until the very end. There's this story his son tells of how when his dad was asked what was the greatest song he ever composed and he replied he hadn't done it yet, but he would first ask the Gods to send Rafi back for a day because it wouldn't be possible without him.
This song is a perfect example of what I said earlier - about Rafi and Lata challenging each other yet being so attuned to the other. It's magic.
