Posting this episode of Classic Legends presented by Javed Akhtar on Mohammed Rafi where (I think) he aptly summarizes just what it is that makes Rafi so special.

ETA: Disclaimer- I do not subscribe to the title - the greatest. I don't think any artist can objectively be termed the 'greatest'.

Song: Dilruba dil pe tu ye sitam kiye ja

This composition, I think is among SJ's best. The antara itself is justn talk-singing, but these two singers elevate this song to another level. The depth of feelings they convey by just their breath (or breathlessness as it were!)

And that last high pitch note Rafi takes to match Asha's? Mind-blowing stuff!

Whoever came up with that idea deserves an award because my GOD! *Shivers*

OMG!! Riya 🤗 I knew, you would definitely make an AT for Rafi saab! If not, I was thinking of asking should we have one 😳

Being an ardent admirer of Rafi's voice, this thread is going to be no less than a treat. Looking forward to many more beautiful write ups from you, like the one on first page. What an amazing range he had, from devotional songs to romantic ones, lending his voice to almost all of the heroes over decades, from the likes of Dilip Kumar, Gurudatta to Jonhy Walker and Shammi Kapoor.

I inherited love for Rafi from my dad as well. Here is the first song that I remember, that made me fall for his voice.

Zindagibhar nahi bhoolegi wo barsaat ki raat

What else than Rafi's voice can describe the enchanting beauty of Madhubala better?

Thank you, Rashmi! 😳

Yep, I don't think anyone could do justice to praising Madhubala's beauty the way Rafi saab's voice could.

The way he says words like 'nichoda' and 'simatna' and 'tilismaat'? Ahh, it feels like a whole new language. The language of romance!

Here's another of his .. the way he hits the hits the high notes in the antara and seamlessly blends into the mukhda!
