YAY! Jem! Now I can grill you 😈

1) What is the difference between a recorder and a flute?

2) I hardly hear of the recorder being used in songs. Why is this the case? Does this have anything to do with the range offered by the instrument or lack of it?

3) Have you created your own DJ mixes on the keyboard? If not, would you like to?

4) What is(are) the hardest piece(s) you've every played on the recorder, keyboard and piano?

5) Do you take part in recitals? If yes, what instruments do you generally play there?

6) How many grades of Piano have you completed? Are you planning to teach music after you reach Grade 8?

7) Who in your opinion is the most talented pianist of all time? (from baroque, classical or modern period) Why is this the case?

8) How many hours in a day do you practice the instruments? I can barely keep up with one, let alone three! 😆

9) Can you sing? Any plans on taking singing lessons?

10) You go to a party with Beethoven and Mozart and your best friend Czerny shows up and tells you to practice sight reading from his pieces. 😛 How will you respond?

11) Same scenario as question 10, but replace Czerny with Himesh. How will you respond? 😆

How long have you been practicing/playing these instruments?!

Well the first instrument I ever learnt to play was the recorder - started learning this from my primary school till year 8 of secondary school - unfortunately no one else was interested in the Recorder club which I started but it was the first ever instrument in which I learnt to play & understand music! Then came the keyboard, which I got as a birthday present for my 12th birthday - I have had no lessons on it - am mostly Self taught - but I can play another day in paradise by Phil Collins on it! Then comes the piano which I have been practicing for 7 years now - am currently on Grade 6. It is my main instrument now 😳

What/who was your motivation and inspiration to learn recorder, piano and keyboard ?! Do any other family members play these instruments?!

Well, music has always played an important part in my life from a very young age - my dad has a strong love for music (he has an electric guitar) & I remember sunday evenings where we use to listen to old bollywood songs such as Pakeezah & some evenings where we would listen to Blues & Jazz & Motown. However, in my family, I am the only one who has continued my love for music - no one else really plays anything - my mum always wanted me to learn the piano & Im glad she did!

Please describe/explain to us the major parts of the recorder, piano and keyboard!

ok the recorder can be pulled apart in 3 sections - it is a wind instrument as you blow to create a sound. The keyboard is a smaller version of a piano & has many features on it - & you can create sounds of other instruments on it as well!

Is a piano similar to a harmonium, in terms of playing?!

I have never really played a harmonium (thats my next goal) so Im not too sure...

Who, if any, is your favorite pianist?! Why is he/she/they your favorite?!

Ok well I really love Christopher Norton - his jazz piano pieces are the best (playing jazz piano is my fave genre) & I also love playing Bach as I tend to play all his pieces really well

Where in your house is your recorder, piano and keyboard displayed?!

My piano is downstairs & so is my recorder. My keyboard is in my room.

When and where do you find it most relaxing/soothing to play these instruments ?!

When I am really stressed out - w/uni work - I like to just sit & play but I have to practice everyday so there is no real set time

When you are playing, describe your emotions at that moment (how does it make you feel)?! Do you close your eyes while playing, like many others?! If so, why?!

Hehe i can't close my eyes - if I did I wldn't be able to read the music!😆 no seriously - I feel a lot calmer after I have played - it is a stress reliever.

If you were given a chance to portray your talent at an event, to which song/musical would you play?! Why?!

Hmmm I have always wanted to do this & my most confident song is Fur Elise - I can play the whole thing & everyone recognises it so I guess I would choose this one!

Is there any other instrument that you would like to learn how to play?! Which one(s)?!

Yes - the harmonium & sitar - I really want to learn Indian classical music

Last but definitely not the least, a very special question from me😃, why do you think a "pia+no" is named what it is?! Does its name have any meaning to you, or do you know the meaning of piano?!

Well I believe it is an italian name as a dynamic is also called "piano" which means "quiet" so Im guessing the name has been derived from there!

MC'ians, it is now your turn, if you have any further questions or comments, please start posting them forJem4himesh now! The person who asks the best questions will be given a special prize! 😊

(This interview will end on the evening of Aug3, 2006)!

1) What is the difference between a recorder and a flute? - well a recorder is held differently, its not made of metal & it has a slightly harsher sound compared to a flute.

2) I hardly hear of the recorder being used in songs. Why is this the case? - I have no idea, I guess the recorder is kinda stereo typed in a way because it is one of those instruments one always plays in school & then nothing more. Does this have anything to do with the range offered by the instrument or lack of it? - i don't think so - it has one whole octave on it & a lot can be done w/it I think!

3) Have you created your own DJ mixes on the keyboard? If not, would you like to? - I haven't 😆 I'd be a bad one, coz my composing sucks 😆

4) What is(are) the hardest piece(s) you've every played on the recorder, keyboard and piano? - Nothing I remember on the recorder has been that difficult 🤔, same goes for keyboard, but for piano I would probably say my current piano piece which Im learning for my Grade 6 exam - "Feeling Good" by Brian Bonsor, is quite hard

5) Do you take part in recitals? If yes, what instruments do you generally play there? - Unfortunately due to studies, I haven't had any time to do recitals 😭

6) How many grades of Piano have you completed? - I have completed 5 grades including theory & am now on Grade 6. Are you planning to teach music after you reach Grade 8? - Yes, this is something I am considering as I would love to do a diploma also

7) Who in your opinion is the most talented pianist of all time? (from baroque, classical or modern period) Why is this the case? - Ok Well, of course the biggies - Bach, Mozart & Beethoven are extremely talented. & in today's time I would say Christopher Norton (I just love his jazz pieces)

8) How many hours in a day do you practice the instruments? I can barely keep up with one, let alone three! 😆 - Ok, well I will be completely honest, because of studies I only get time to do riyaaz for the piano - although I can safely say I have not forgotten anything I have learnt on the keyboard/recorder & I do play them from time 2 time.

9) Can you sing? Any plans on taking singing lessons? - You must be joking 😆 Surprisingly my piano teacher did once say to me that I sing in pitch (matlab ke I am in sur) but I think she wasn't listening properly 😆 I have had to learn a bit of singing for the aural parts of my piano exams.

10) You go to a party with Beethoven and Mozart and your best friend Czerny shows up and tells you to practice sight reading from his pieces. How will you respond? Haila - you remember naa how much I hate Czerny? God what was he thinking when he created those 101 short pieces 😆 I would probably play no52 - I just learnt it & its an easy one 😛

11) Same scenario as question 10, but replace Czerny with Himesh. How will you respond? 😆 firstly, Jem would be flattered to have Himeshji as her best friend 😳 - so naturally she wld do whatever he asks 😆😉

What's the differnce? 😕 🤔

Ok well - out of the recorders above, I play the Alto. Some of my friends use to play the bigger ones too! - The sound is much deeper in those. With the keyboards, there is not much difference according to the make - they just have diff functions.

what advantages (plural 😛 )..a Piano has over KB-piano.., and what advantages KB-piano has over Piano. - hehe ok well on the keyboard, it is v.difficult to play w/dynamics - e.g. loud & soft as there are no controls for this. But on the piano it is much easier, as you can hit the key according to how loud or soft the note should sound.

my ignorance, this is the first time, i ever heard of Recorder. why it's name is Recorder ? - Well even I have no idea about this 😳 - I shall try n find it out...
(and i will read ur answers to T.'s Qs.)
