Baba Sehgal throws a pun-ch at Mrs. and Mr. Sharma.

May 20th, 2010 - 3:52 pm ICT by Sampurn Wire -

May 20, 2010 (Sampurn Wire):Mrs. and Mr. Sharma Allahabadwale got going from 17 May. The cast and crew assembled together to celebrate the first telecast at Mumbai's BJN Banquets.

One was surprised to see the presence of actors Baba Sehgal and Abhishek Avasthi, who were entertaining SAB viewers at the same slot just a week ago with their show Jugni Chali Jalandhar. The struggling DJ's show had to make way for Mrs. and Mr. Allahabadwale.

It's never a nice feeling to see your show come to an end. "Jugni', Muskaan Mehani, claimed to have cried for six hours. It must have been emotional day for other actors too. That's why it was all the more surprising to see Sehgal and Avasthi.

Sehgal arrived little late, and appeared to be in real hurry to leave. He was spotted gulping down a solitary drink. Once the cake was cut, Sehgal bid good bye to SAB programming head Saeed Akhtar and few individuals (presumably channel officials). It was then that Sehgal said, "Chalo, ab iski (Mrs. and Mrs.Sharma Allahabadwale) TRP dekhte hai.. (We'll watch out for the TRP of this show)." Akhtar broke into laughter. He refused to let Sehgal go, and asked him to take another drink. The actor couldn't say no. However, he fled the scene soon.

Nice pun Baba, but take a chill pill. Jugni Chali Jalandhar had its run. A show lasting two years in these times is a pretty good achievement. Besides, it's nothing less than a miracle for a Jugni Chali Jalandhar to have lasted that long. Now it's time for the Allahabadi couple to make merry.

I'm hopeless in romance: Rajesh

Rajesh Kumar is back with another rib-tickling comedy ' Mrs and Mr Sharma Allahabad Wale. But is he as amusing in real life? Yes. No. Yes. When we met the actor, he came across as a down-to-earth, fun loving person ' honestly admitting that Delhi heat is unbearable, a bit irritated with his fake moustache and overtly patient while staging an act (from his new show) for a news channel. His accounts of what freaks him out and makes him such a hopeless case when it comes to romantic are hilarious...

Does the concept of camps (like the K camp) still exist in the TV industry?
Yes, camps do exist. There are producers who are at ease with a set of people they have worked with in the past. I have also worked with the same production house for the last six years. Interestingly, they are keen on giving me more projects. It is more about the comfort level they share with me. But then, it also boils down to how I perform. The entire team expects me to give great results. However, going by the number of channels and the variety of programmes that the viewers get to see, such camps can't exist for very long. For instance, if I'm working for one show, it will be difficult for me to take up other shows. According to me, the word 'camp' carries no negative connotation. On the contrary, it gives the actors a sense of security.

What do you think is the viewers' perception of you as an individual?
I'm very approachable. I don't hold myself back from meeting people because I know this is part of my profession. My shows which have been popular with the masses have helped me gain recognition as an actor.

So you don't conduct yourself differently when you meet people?
A lot depends on the kind of person I get meet. For, I have come across people who don't know me by my real name, but end up giving a loud reaction. So there are moments when the meeting gets a bit scary. And then I have no option but to say courteously, 'Yeah, it is me.' But there are people who are extremely polite and I talk to them as I'd to my family member.

Any more weird incidents that you can recall...
This one happened in a mall in Delhi. The guy approached me and all that said to me for about two minutes was, 'Arey, arey, arey yeh, arey'. I know it sounds funny, but that was all he muttered. I didn't know how to react and waited for him to say something more. But this guy didn't. Finally, I had to tell him, 'Main bata deta hoon ki main kaun hoon. Arey, arey, arey, bahut ho gayaa.' Such instances, at times, do get on your nerves. Khaas kar ke Rosesh ke 'Moma' word ke baad. Log road pe mujhe Moma bolte they. Aisa lagta tha koi patthar maar raha hai. I'd turn back and tell them, 'Chaedd kyun rahe ho be?'

But Rosesh's role was popular ...
Yes. In Sarabhai , Satish Shah, Deven Bhojani and Ratana Pathak helped me a lot to give my best. They all were very supportive. Initially, I wasn't able to get the hang of the character but became possible because of them.

There have been instances where actors have had creative differences with their producers and directors. Have you experienced any?
Mauka mila nahin! Essentially because the kind of scripts I've worked on till now have been great. So there has never been the need to give my inputs. If I know I can give something better, I make sure I do. But if I can't, I leave it and do what is written. I'm a very script-oriented actor. I can do a lot if you give me a script but if you can't and expect me to add my own stuff ' then I think it gets a little difficult for I need to know what's expected from me.

Your show Mrs and Mr Allahabad Wale on Sab TV ' where did you get the inspiration from?
The love between the couple, which is so evident, is something that I have seen in my parents. Unlike what we get to see these days ' fake and materialistic. I don't think love now has got anything to do with genuine feelings.

How about your love life?
I'm quite hopeless when it comes to romance. That's exactly what I told Divyanka ' allow me to handle the comedy while you concentrate on the romance.

What got Rajesh Kumar hopping?

May 22nd, 2010 - 6:32 pm ICT by Sampurn Wire -

May 22, 2010 (Sampurn Wire):Professionalism demands a lot from an individual. However it shouldn't be at the cost of going against nature.

On Monday night, the team of Mrs. and Mr. Sharma Allahabadwale celebrated the launch of their show. Lead actors Divyanka Tripathy and Rajesh Kumar were expectedly the cynosure of all eyes. The duo spoke at length to the scribes. While Divyanka appeared measured, Kumar caught our eye by his constant hopping in between giving bytes. This happened on more than one occasion.

After speaking to one of the publicists, we were told that the actor's been itching to dance. That's why he's jumping. It was quite a strange explanation. Though we didn't buy it, the energy shown by Kumar on dance floor some what reflected his enthusiasm. One step too many ignited his back pain and the actor called curtains for the night.

We called the actor to find about his health but also asked him why was he consistently hopping during the interview? Kumar stunned us with his reply.

"No, I wasn't keen to dance. It's just that I was dying to go to the loo. The interviews just didn't seem to end," Kumar said.

Well, if it was so urgent, he surely could have excused himself for a minute.

"That's true but I wanted to finish all interview at one go. It doesn't look nice to be breaking mid-way," pat came the reply.

Bizarre! Is that all, we'd say. Mr. Kumar, we appreciates your professionalism and also your ability to control nature's "flow'.

I'm looking like a bhangi: Divyanka Tripathy

March 30th, 2010 - 12:09 pm ICT by Sampurn Wire -

March 30, 2010 (Sampurn Wire):Some believe that she's arguably the most loved bahu in small screen's recent history. Her show Banoo main teri Dulhann went off air, but her fans are conspicuous by her long absence. Critics wrote her off but Divyanka is not one to go down quietly in the sunset. Divyanka simply shut herself from the outer world preferring to go into exile mode. The pretty lass will soon be seen in SAB daily titled Mr. and Mrs Sharma.

After a long while, Divyanka picked up her phone much to the surprise of this reporter. One couldn't help but ask Divyanka as to has she now come out of her exile?

"Yes, I have come out of my exile. I believe in life there comes a time when you must disconnect yourself from the outer world and just stick to your family and close friends. For close to three years, I'd worked day in and day out thereby, I wasn't able to give time to myself. There were lot of things that I wanted to but I couldn't take it up. One of them was to have a house of my own," said Divyanka.

That dream has now turned into a reality with Tripathy buying a 2 BHK flat in the plush area of Malad. The girl from UP took it upon herself to decorate her house. Well, surprisingly, she hasn't been able to find a maid and so Divyanka is left to do most of the household work viz. brooming, cleaning floors, bathroom and toilets too. The girl though isn't whining.

"For a while, I did have a maid, but I wasn't impressed with her work. So, I took it upon myself to wash dishes, bathrooms and even toilet. You won't believe but I'm looking like a bhangi (sweeper). It's always best that you take care of your own house. My mother always maintained that you should do your own work. Guess, now I'm following in her footsteps. I feel doing such work instills a sense of humility as you start respecting people for whom this is a means to earn their daily bread," Tripathy sighed.

The talk now moves out of the house and it's work again that captures her imagination. She's got an interesting tale about how she landed Mr. and Mrs Sharma.

Tripathy says, "I had agreed (not signed) to do another project but one day Ujjwal Rana (Mr. and Mrs. Sharma's co-producer) asked me to come down and have a look at the script. After reading, I was in splits. Rana could sense that I was impressed and so he wouldn't hear no for an answer. So, I agreed to do a show where I didn't even shoot the pilot. Guess, it was in my destiny to do Mr. and Mrs.Sharma"

Critics are already lamenting Tripathy for opting for a show on a relatively lesser known channel but the actress is unperturbed "I knew, people will raise this point, but I want to tell everyone that I snubbed a bigger GEC for the SAB show. Comedy is something which I always wanted to do. I've shed enough tears. Now is the time to make viewers smile," the former tragedy queen explained.

Finally, it's Sharad Malhotra who comes to our mind. However, Divyanka is still very diplomatic when it comes to talking about her alleged boyfriend.

"Sharad is doing fine," pat comes the reply. As always, it's difficult to get her speak on this one. Anyways, well come back Divyanka.

Watch Mrs & Mr Sharma Allahabad wale on SAB
Teaching English to the Sharma family is not easy. They keep asking weird questions from the tutor. And the tutor's confidence is shaken up and starts feeling that she can't teach English. They get to know about a coaching class which teaches English in 10-15 days.

They all enroll their names there. But they create such a havoc there that they are told to leave. By now Mr. Sharma is confident that he can at least pass the test at the school and get Daboo's admission .

They all sit for the school test. Daboo passes but Mr. and Mrs. Sharma fail. Do they then mange to convince the principal to overcome the language barrier or the fate intervenes? Will Daboo get the admission?
Dont forget to catch Mrs & Mr Sharma Allahabad wale at 9.30 pm only on SAB

'Mrs. & Mr. Sharma' my first solo hero serial: Rajesh Kumar

Rajesh Kumar, who made it big by playing Roshesh in 'Sarabhai vs. Sarabhai', says that the comedy series 'Mrs. & Mr. Sharma' is his first solo hero serial in 10 years.

'Mrs. & Mr. Sharma' my first solo hero serial: Rajesh Kumar

"After 10 years I got an opportunity to dominate the screen with a solo performance. In my earlier ventures, I was a part of multi-starrers. Though it makes me feel nervous, but now is the time when I can show my talent to my audience," Rajesh told us.

"As far as Bollywood is concerned, I'm not getting roles that I deserve. I would rather say I have not been offered roles in movies. I'm happy with my screen space. People still remember me as Roshesh of 'Sarabhai vs Sarabhai', the series that got over four years back," he added.

Rajesh has been part of most series that had comedy - 'Sarabhai vs Sarabhai', 'Baa Bahu aur Baby', 'Comedy Circus' and latest in his kitty is 'Mrs. & Mr. Sharma Allahabad wale'.

'Mrs. & Mr. Sharma Allahabad wale' depicts the journey of a middle-class couple who move to a big city. Divyanka Tripathi, Vidya of 'Banoo Main Teri Dulhan', plays Rajesh's wife in it.

Talking about his role, Rajesh said: "In this show, I am in a complete new role which is very different from the characters I have played earlier. My character is a very idealistic husband, who loves his wife, respects her and gives her enough space. The essence of romance has been portrayed very beautifully."

The actor doesn't want to be typecast.

"I want to prove myself as an actor and I believe comedy gives space to explore individual dimensions. I don't believe when people say I have limited myself... I'm not type-cast to a specific genre. My intentions are to prove myself as a complete performer, actor and bring out my true abilities.

Eatin der cake as well!
The telly gang seemed to be present in full strength at the launch party of Mr & Mrs Sharma Allahabadwale on SAB TV.

And going by the smiles on everyone's faces after they watched the first episode of the show, it was quite apparent that they had a rocking time watching it!

Producers Ujjwal Rana and Sunil Bindrani were spotted receiving congratulatory messages on their cellphones, once the show was aired. Rajesh Kumar and Divyanka Tripathi too were inundated with greetings.

Vrajesh Hirjee dropped in for a bit, as did Baba Sehgal and Abhishek Awasthi, who were spotted bonding over some guy-talk. Resham Tipnis looked pretty in a black salwar kameez, even as she displayed her blue nail polish! Malini Kapoor and Vandana Pathak were also spotted at this event. Little Nikunj enjoyed himself while Ragini gave him company.

Rajesh's wife Madhavi was by his side throughout the evening. This telly do was a fun affair for all.

COUPLE CAPERS:
Rajesh and Divyanka seemed like the perfect reel life couple as they pulled each others' legs throughout the evening. And when it came to cutting the yummy chocolate cake, the two fed each other with much glee!

Mrs. and Mr. Sharma Allahabad wale will now have to face the local don, in Ashiesh Roy.. Get ready for another laughter riot in the new SAB TV show..

As reported earlier by TellyBuzz, funnyman Ashiesh Roy for the first time will be seen enacting the character of a Maharashtrian Don in Sab TV and Starex Entertainment's recently launched show, Mrs. & Mr. Sharma Allahabad wale.

According to our source, "Ashiesh Roy's (Don Anna) entry sequence will be aired tonight. He unexpectedly enters the lives of the Sharma's when his younger brother is slapped by Mr. Sharma (Rajesh Kumar). Unaware that his beloved brother had in fact, teased Mr. Sharma's sister, Anna just descends upon the Sharma family to teach them a lesson, and what follows is a laughter riot."

Mrs. & Mr. Sharma, in its opening week has received enormous appreciation, and has opened up to pretty impressive ratings that pushes the show to the #2 show on the channel, just after Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. In fact, on one particular day the numbers of Mrs. & Mr. Sharma exceeded Taarak Mehta in the AMAP ratings.

Ashiesh Roy has all the reason to be on cloud nine these days for being part of the show. "This is a great role; for the first
time I will be playing a gangster on screen. I'm both excited
and nervous about this and also working very hard to get the nuances right and I do hope the audience likes what I do."

He also added, "It's a wonderful role, and through my character, the message of communal harmony is also being conveyed."

Apart from embossing on his character he even revealed a hidden talent to us. "Along with acting I am also writing a story for a movie though the concept is the output of many intelligent minds, created 2 years back but I'm writing the dialogues myself so hope it turns out well."

Do watch tonight's episode to know how Mr. Sharma escapes the wrath of the dreaded don, with of course, loads of hilarious twists and turns!

This ain't funny

Kshama Rao, K Shama Rao Posted: Jun 04, 2010 at 1718 hrs IST
Mrs And Mr Sharma Allahabadwale
Monday - Thursday, 9.30 pm, SAB TV Dhristidhyumna Sarva Prasad Sharma, his wife, sister and son have just arrived in Mumbai on transfer from Allahabad. Mrs And Mr Sharma, Allahabadwale is about their bitter sweet experiences in the big bad city of dreams.
Right from the time they step out of the station to the time they land at their rented apartment, the Sharmas get a good taste of Mumbai, from coolies who con them to a noble Sardar cabbie who doesn't take them for a ride to a pushy tenant and her four unruly kids who refuse to leave the Sharmas at peace, from an estate agent who likes his hands greased for everything the Sharmas ask for to a gas cylinder wala who 'sells' it in black prompting Mr Sharma to ask, "Arre, hamare yahan toh cylinder laal hota hai." If you find this funny, then probably the show is for you. We know every episode is going to be a case of a city losing its values versus small town innocence. But sorry, boss!

It didn't work for us simply because the clich-ridden situations are not funny to say the least - we have seen the corrupt babus before - and the performances by the lead cast do not help either. If Rajesh Kumar as mamma's boy Rasesh still has us in splits in the umpteenth rerun of Sarabhai V/S Sarabhai, then as the safari suit clad Mr Sharma with oiled hair and pencil thin moustache, he just doesn't cut the ice. Divyanka Tripathi seems to be so happy to have got the role of Mrs Sharma that her face is constantly dancing and she moves around with a slouch. The shimmering saris and that hideous red flower in her hair which Mr Sharma lovingly tucks in her hair every morning add to our woes. For her, comedy is clearly a big effort and it shows.
Wish these Sharmas had not left Allahabad'

Verdict: Meet the Sharmas at your own will.

Comic caper

Mrs & Mr Sharma
Allahabadwale
SAB, Monday to Thursday, 9.30pm
Rating: ***

What's it about? A number of shows have played on the stereotypes of Mumbai in the past. This show seems to be no different. Mrs & Mr Sharma Allahabadwale is a celebration of the spirit and journey of a small town, middle-class family that struggles to cope with the day-to-day incidents after they migrate to their city of dreams, Mumbai. Right from being duped by a coolie to a cabbie taking them for a ride and a manipulative estate agent, the sitcom takes you through various facets of Mumbai. However, Mrs and Mr Sharma always have a funny take on the problems faced by them and ultimately manage to overcome it.

Who's in it? Rajesh Kumar, of the Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai fame, leads the cast. He plays the role of the affable Mr Dristhdumn Sarveshwar Prasad Sharma, who has strong values and beliefs. He sticks to them even in adverse situations. Playing his wife Mrs Rashmi Sharma is Divyanka Tripathi, who had almost disappeared from the small screen after her stellar performance in Banoo Main Teri Dulhann. She is a typical housewife who is overwhelmed by the charms of a big city and has blind faith in her husband. Young Swapnil plays the role of their precocious son Dilip aka Lalla while Alka is Mr Sharma's Bollywood-crazy sister Ragini. Vandana Pathak, who has earned accolades for her comic timing in Khichdi and Hum Paanch, portrays the role of a Gujarati housewife Rajshree with four kids. Anang Desai is Mr Sharma's no-nonsense boss.

What's hot? Kumar, a veteran comic actor, has always excelled in roles that are unconventional. He pulls off his role as Mr Sharma from Allahabad very well. The diction is perfect and so is the styling. But the chemistry between his wife and him is the highlight of the show. Most sitcoms lose their plot when it comes to dialogues and delivering them. And this is where the serial scores. Even though cliches mark the serial (for instance, the travails of finding a plumber and electrician or gas company employees going on a strike), at no point do these problems appear redundant or overdone. The editing is crisp.

What's not? Although Tripathi does a remarkable job of getting her expressions and clothes right, she still has a long way to go before she gets her dialogue delivery correct. She is lagging in this respect when compared with Kumar. Only time will tell if these rough edges will be smoothened. Alka has to work harder to be convincing as a star-struck girl. With just two scenes per episode, she doesn't have much scope either. Remembered for her spontaneity in Khichdi, Pathak is yet to find her form.

Should you be watching it? It does tickle your funny bone. It is a rarity these days for comedy shows to hold your attention for too long. As long as this one does, one must watch it.
