Part VII

Thousands thoughts were running through kranti's mind while climbing the stairs at the temple. She was going to meet her old friend after such a long time and without any disturbance hopefully.

'What will I tell Shubhankar? How will I explain my marriage to him? What has he been doing all this while?' Too many questions and no answers, but she had to face all of them all now.

Raj was standing behind the old peepal tree and looking at her. Kranti was wearing a pink suit and the golden border of her dupatta was reflecting on her face lighting up her beauty. Raj's heart was going on playing hide and seeks with him skipping too many beats today, however somehow he was liking the idea.

Kranti gave her offerings to the pandit at the temple and after taking his blessings she went around the temple. Raj was eagerly waiting for her to emerge form the other side.

'Hasn't she taken a bit too long to complete the round, let me go and check hope everything is fine'

Raj walked behind the temple saw kranti holding hands of the same guy whom he had seen at the temple and marriage. Raj could not contain his anger and walked back with a clenched fist.

Kranti met shubhankar, answering the questions was easier then she thought, he was her most trusted friend after all.

Shubhankar always teased Kranti for her love for pink color and use to call her "pinku" a name she hated. And today he was meeting his 'pinku' who belonged to some one else one thing which is been troubling him ever since he got to know that she is married.

S: pinku'.. how are you.

K: shubhanker you know I hate this name and you don't seem to learn I am going.

S: Hey pinku..Oooops kranti wait. (He skipped to hold her arm)

Kranti them turned around and took shubhnkars hands in hers.

K: How are you, Damru?

S: And you also don't seem to learn your lessons right. They both had a hearty laugh, oblivious to that fact that Raj was looking at both of them at that time.

Raj was driving like a maniac though at such an early hour there are not many people on the streets of Lahore. Still he almost knocked a milk man. While tugging at the steering to save poor milkman he ended up hitting his head onto the steering, which had its own lethal effect on him, he was left with an open gash on his forehead and a painful one.

Some how he droved back and ran up to his room hiding his would from a few people around who were awake.

However BBR saw him and went running to chaiji. A worried chaiji walked into Raj's room.

Kranti came back from the temple and went to the kitchen where Chaiji was making some haldi milk for Raj.

C: You have come puttar, I don't know what has gone into the head of this boy I don't know where he went so early in the morning and came back with a gash on his forehead. Here some haldo milk please take it for him and ensure that he drinks it he will try to avoid drinking this but you ensure that he has it all.

K: Sure. Where did he go in the morning, was he following me. No it can't be, he must have gone to do some other dirty work for his English bosses.

K: Here have this milk and what happened to you.

R: I don't want anything.

K: Oh my god the wound seems bad what happened.

R: Nothing.

K: Here have this milk you will feel better.

R: I told you I don't want anything.

K: I know you hate this milk but have it, it will do you good.

R: (Turned around and threw the glass spilling the milk on the floor.) Don't you understand that I don't need anything and please leave me alone.

K: What happened to you, why are you so angry?

R: It is none of your business now get lost.

Kranti walked out surprised. They met again at the breakfast table. After serving food to the family both BBR and Kranti sat down to eat.

BBR: What happened Krani you got very late in the morning why met an old friend or what?

K: Par'.

She could not even say a word before that Raj got up and stormed out of the room, without eating anything. Leaving every one on the table puzzled, except BBR.

'I fired in the dark however I think I have hit the bulls eye.'

Raj was sitting in his office, Thinking.

I have no right to stop her form having a love in her life. I know she does not love me, or for that matter I don't even know for how long we will be together. I always know that she is going to go away and didn't I always want her to leave me alone. And now when she is found her love and is preparing to leave me, I don't have a right to act possessive. It was a deal between us so let it be that way. If she is in love with some one I will let her go at least she will be happy. I have not given her anything accept pain and suffering.

Raj Got up with a determined look on his face as if he was relived of some big dilemma.

Raj came home very late. Everyone had dinner and were in their rooms. Raj walked into his room. Kranti was not where to be seen in the room. He looked outside she was sitting at the terrace in front of the room. Raj lookes at her and smiled. He knew he had made a decision and he was right this time.

Raj changed and went to his study straight he sat down with a drink in his hands. He picked up the picture of his and Kranti's marriage. He looked at his own expressions and smiled. He was looking as if he had a frog stuck in his throat. He kept the picture down and the sat down after releasing a deep sigh. Kranit came from behind.

K: How are you feeling Raj.

R: Better much better.

K: Oh my god your bandage has come off how can you be so careless. Wait let me get the first aid box.

R: Hmmm '

K: (comes with the box in her hand) Here apply some medicine.

R: Hmmmmm

He picked up the cotton wool to apply some medicine but couldn't place it at the right place.

K: You cant even do one thing right. Give it to me.

She gently bandaged his wound while. He kept looking at her. The aroma of her body so close to his was tantalizing his senses. He eyes were closing. He took a deep breath and stopped as if he wanted to lock that sweet aroma of Kranti in his senses.

K: Here done. What what happened to you. Shall I get you some haldi milk.

R: No, I am ok. Kranti can you sit with me for a while.

Kranti was surprised but she did not say anything and sat on the chair next to Raj's,

There was a stoic scilence for a long time between them.

K: Raj what happened how did you get hurt.

R: I managed to bang my car somewhere.

K: Hmm it seems since I have come into your life your car refuses to let you drive safe. Don't worry you wont suffer this for a long time. (Smiling at her own joke)

R: (looking at her with a hurt look in his eyes) Yeah may be. If only you would understand the reason for it (he whispered)

K: what, why are you muttering under your breath.

R: Nothing this milkman suddenly came in front of my car.

K: Though it is none of my business but where did you go so early in the morning.

R: I had gone to see the sunrise but I did not know that the sun for me has not risen yet.

K: Can you talk me normally some time leaving this lawyer types for your clients. Anyway I am feeling very sleepy. You also don't drink too much and sleep in time.

R: Sit here for a while no. I am feeling quite lonely.

K: Raj what has happened to you. You want to sit with your arch enemy. Be carefull you might end up giving me your weakness.

She smiled and sat down.

R: you are me weakness Kranti and what else do you want to know. I am in this state cos of you. Why don't you understand my feelings and who the hell is that man. I have never seen you so happy as you were with him. That's what is burning my heart and you refuse ti understand. Ohh.. (suddenly some pain in his wound may by due to too much of thinking)

K: What happened is it hurting. Now leave the drinks I am getting the haldi milk for you have it and sleep.

R: You can see the pain in the wound but what about my heart. Cant you see the pain there.

No it is ok I think I will sleep. And why are you so bothered about me.

K: Raj for once decide what do you want in life. You asked me to sit beside you and now you are asking about me being bothered about you. Listen Mr. Rajbir I will be concerned about anyone who is hurt like that.

Raj gave her a long and hard stare and walked out.

K: Funny I cant understand this man. Anyway that's none of my concern anyway. I am happy that now shubhankar knows the whole truth.

Raj woke up the next day. Winter had already approached. It was a crisp and cold morning. Chaiji and Bauji had to go to the gurdwara today they asked BBR and Keval also to accompany them to get the blessings for their child. Buaji was not too well so she stayed back. Raj also left for work without saying a word to Kranti.

In the evening Krnati cooked food Buaji had asked her to make some Saag as Raj loved it. Kranti had cooked some saag. Dinner went on quietly and the buaji went to her room.

Raj and Kranti were in their room Suddenly Krani realized something.

K: I forgot to give milk to Buaji she will need it to take her medicine.

R: Hmmmm

Kranti went out to get milk to Buaji.

B: Come puttar I was waiting for you to take this medicine. I will take the medicine and sleep you carry on and sleep it is very cold.

Kranti came into her room. She realized something and stepped out on the terrace Raj tried to stop her but she could not hear him.

Raj went to the door but could not see anything as the fog was very thick, Suddenly he saw Kranti coming back running into the roon with a bundle of clothes in her hand. She was shivering as she had gone out in one single cardigan.

Raj quickly held her hand and pulled her in.

R: What was the hurry to get the clothes Kranti you could have done that in the morning.

The feel of Raj's warm hand immediately soothed her. Shr kept on holding his hands tightly for a while. Suddenly a cold gust of wind from the open door jerked them. Raj went and closed the door. Kranti was still standing and shivering.

Raj got a shawl and wrapped her drawing her close to his chest. It was cold or a sudden urge to go close to him Kranti also did not protest instead she went closer to him. Raj held her shoulders and asked feeling better. Krani nodded her head in agreement without moving . She was still holding on to both the corners of the shawl and still shivering . Raj strechted his arm behind her and held her.

R:You are still very cold come sit in the bed.

K: I will sleep in my bed (Still not moving)

R: Don't be silly I am not going to eat you up. You get the cold off you and then sleep where ever you want.

He made her sit on the bed and sat beside her. She was still very close to him. The warmth of his chest was giving her a lot of comfirt. She did not realize when she got too close to him and his hand was still on her shoulders. She rested her head on his chest. He was taken aback for a moment but then held her close.

That aroma again. He took a deep breath and held her tight. Kranti also did not protest instead she gave in to his grip. Raj's hand was moving slowly on her back and she was still holding on to the edges of the shawl her hiding her face in his broad chest now. He moved the loc of hair which was dangling on her neck and then planted a delecate kiss on her neck. She closed her eyes and stretched her arms to hold him. His breathing had become heavier so did hers. She held onto him and he kept caressing her back. It was very cold outside and the passion burning inside. He gently laid her down on the bed and lied beside her. Holding her as close to him as he could. She too held him close to her. Raj lifted his face and got it close to Kranti's he looked at her beautiful face she was looking like an angel with eyes closed. He bent down gently and planted a kiss in her lips. She reacted with a slight wince and almost reciprocated to his lips but then she got up with a jerk.

K: What are we doing? No this is not right. She tried to free herself form his grip to run as far away as she could.

R:Kranti listen. He went behind her.

K: No leave me alone what were you trying to do.

R: Listen to me.

K: No go away. I am ashamed at myself How could I'

R: (Getting angry) Enough. What have I done.

K: No this is not right I '..

Raj suddenly got up with a jerk and held her hand he them pulled and pinned her to he wall. His eyes dark with anger Kranti was struggling to get herself free. But his force was too much for her to counter. She looked in his eyes and got scared. His dark eyes were staring at her face.

R: (Through his clenched teeth) Whats not right Kranti. Tell me whats not right. I want to know form You.

K: Leave me Raj you are hurting me.

R: That's what you do to your enemy.

K: Raj you have gone mad leave me.

R: Yes I have gone mad. And you have made me mad coming close to your own husband is wrong and secret meetings with your lover is right isn't it.

K: What are you talking about leave it.

Raj was holding her so tight that his fingers were digging into her flesh by now almost stopping her blood circulation.

R: Yeah you would not know what am I talking about. You think that you can do anything behind me back and I will not get to know isn't it. You have been planning meeting with your lover and I will not get to know. Coming close to your own husband is not right and holding hands of this man and laughing with him in public is right, isn't it.

Kranti Could not take it anymore she pushed him with all her might and tried to move. He held her hand again.

R: I demand an explanation kranti who is this man isn't he the reason you are not letting me come close to you.

K: Enough of your ranting Raj. He is my childhood friend I would have introduced him to you as I have nothing to hide but he is a KK and you would have planned something against him as well that's why I did not tell you anything about him. You have a dirty mind Raj and I despise you even more now. Dare not come close to me or talk to me ever. I will kill you if you do so.

She walked out of the room leaving him blank.

This was not a part of my plan. I couldn't have let kranti go to anyone else and that's why I had decided to win her heart with my love and what have I done. I have hurt her even more. I could not control my passion and anger both. I have hurt her even more now. She hates me more than anything else. My jealousy got better of me, I suspected a woman like Kranti who in spite of having no relations with me does so much for my family.

Raj went in the direction where kranti went he saw her sitting in the temple and crying. He wanted to hold her and comfort her but did not have courage to do that.

Best part was of course the bed scene where Kranti reciprocates to Raj's kiss😳...how beautifully u described it👏👏...too good😳...

And the hilarious part was Shubu addressing Kranti as Pinku😆...Also Kranti addressing Shubu as Damru😆😆😆...that was some imagination Ranju😉😆...

I hope Shubu and Raj can become good friends in the future😳...its really getting interesting now😛...do continue soon😳

Part VIII

Kranti was even more angry on Raj. How could he behave like that to her. She is not having an affair with anyone and if she is what was his concern. She was not going to explain anything to him. But she did already, I did that so hat he leaves me that animal. She was trying to justify herself.

Next day every body came home. The life went back to same mundane routine. The whole week passed Raj and kranti were trying to avoid each other after that night. Chaji ji and BBR observed this sudden change of behavior and tried asking the reasons. Raj told something to chaiji and avoided BBR totally leaving her digging for information but she got none.

Kranti was working in the kitchen when her mama ji came to meet her. Kranti was very happy to see him. After discussing about their respsctive families mamaji told something to Kranti which left her worried. She did not even want to talk to Raj but had no option now.

She came into the room Raj was sitting and reading the news paper. She walked in a stood beside him. Raj lifted his eyes. He was looking for an opportunity to talk to her and she came to him serself.

R: Kranti I wanted to talk to …..

K: I have some work with you.

R: Huh tell me.

K: Mamaji came today and told me that my Badi Bi wants meet me and my husband.

R: Badi Bi, who is she.

K: She is more then a mother to me after my parents died she kept me alive and brought me up before mamaji got me here to Lahore. She is too old now and wants meet me and my husband. If only she knew the truth of our marriage.

R: We will go tell me when do you want to travel.

K: A little surprised but happy at the same time. Thanks. And she went away.

Raj kept looking at her.

Thank god for sending mamaji here I will get to spend some time with Kranti and will be able to explain the real me to her. She is upset with me and she ought to be I have blamed her for such a nasty thing.

Next morning Raj and kranti got ready to leave for Rattowal.

That was the place badi bi use to stay. Badi bi was not only a mother to Kranti but to shubhankar as well. She knew about the feelings shubhankar had for Kranti and she was even more worried about Kranti after shubhankar told her the truth of her marriage.

Rattowal was not very far form Lahore they took about 45 mins to reach there. And it being early morning they did not find any traffic even. By the time they reached there the sun was rising and the dark sky was turning warm orange with its light. They were not on a mud road and on both sies of it were wheat and mustard fields. Mustard plants were in bloom and the field looked like a bright yellow carpet of mustard plants. Raj was enjoying the scenery through out the bumpy mud road.

Kranti was feeling awkward sitting so close to him after the night. Everytime her body touched, which happened to often thank to the bumpy road she felt a tingling sensation running through her body. Raj was enjoying the scenery oblivious to her plight. They reached badi bi's house.

When the car stopped in front of a brick house where badi bi use to stay, this was the house where kranti had spent the most beautiful days of her childhood. She and shubhankar had all love and care of badi bi before mamaji came and took her to get her admitted into a school and shubhankar left to be with Sohan Tauji. This house was a lone building which stood in the middle of a field "how does badi bi manages to stay alone here even now" wondered Kranti. She looked at everything around with nostalgia. Her glance was broken with a loud squeal from the village urchins who had not seen an occasional car on the road but not one in their own village and a man dressed in trouser and coat with a hat never. At first they kept looking at Raj with a lot of curiosity and then suddenly broke out laughing which invited Kranti's attention.

She too started laughing looking at Raj who had stepped in a small puddle and was by not jumping to avoind dirtying his already messed trouser. Raj looked at her with so much of pity on his face that she suddenly stopped laughing. By then badi had some out and she had shooed away the kids.

She looked at Kranti and hugged her immediately. Then she turned around and looked at Raj.

Bbi: who is this English man with you. She lugged at him with her walking stick.

K: Badi bi he is my husband

R: Atlast she said it with her own mouth. Pari pena.

Bbi: You an Indian man then why these English clothes. Oh god look at your Pajama it is dirty with mud. Go and change it. Wait I will get some clothes organized for you.

Badi bi walked inside taking Kranti by her hand and signaling Raj to follow them which he did.

She then asked him to go and take a bath he froze at the thought taking a bath in this chill and with the cold water here. God I will be dead

Bbi: what are you thinking Haan I know you English types cant take bath with cold water. Hey don't worry it will not be cold it is indeed warm water form the well. Go now.

R: Ji.

K: Wait I will get you a towel.

Raj took the towel

R: I would need some clothes to wear.

Bbi: I know that. Here are the clothes for you.

Kranti looked up to the guy holding the clothes and she froze in her place. Her hand automatically went to hold her other hand which was still a little sour due to Raj's grip.

Whats shubhankar dong here.

Raj looked up realizing the person standing there his worried face suddenly turned hard .He did not react and took the fresh clothes form shubhankar and went away.

The water didn't feel cold on his body he was fuming inside, still he had decided that he will not react as he trusted Kranti but that guy. When he came back after taking a bath everyone was sitting beside the fire and having freshly cooked paranthas which badi bi was making for them. Krani insisted a lot that she will make them but badi bi wanted to feed both her kids like old times. They were eating and visibly having a good time.

S: Pinku do not eat much you have become fat and will become even fatter, badi bu don't give her anymore paranthas. Look at her.

K: look at your self damru seems you don't get anything to eat hence you have been looking like a dired date offlate.

S: badi bi look at her.

K: Yeah it always happens whne you cant say anything you always run to badi bi you damru.

S: (lugged at Kranti) wait pinku I wil just teach you a lesson.

Kranti ran and shubhankar chased, she literally ran into Raj who was standing at the door looking at them trying to think hard. Kranti was taken aback looking at his serious expression.

Bbi: Are Raj puttar come and eat your breakfast don't bother about these two they are like that since their childhood.

R: Ji.

They all sat and ate quietly.

The sun was up by now and it had taken away the morning chill with it. The fields were looking even more beautiful dressed in the sunlight, but Raj's mind was not at the beauty of the fields or the warmth. Though he had decided not to mistrust, Kranti it was shubhankars eyes which were troubling him. He could see the same longing in his eyes for Kranti which he had in his. Raj was in deep thinking when badi bi came and sat with him.

Bbi: what are you thinking about puttar.

R:Nothing…

Bbi: You are thiking about Kranti right.

R: How do you know that.

Bbi: I have been seeing you since you saw shubhankar here. You have been feeling insecure.

R: No actually…

Bbi: Puttar I have seen life you cant defy the eyes if this old woman.

R: Yes I have been thinking about them. Can you tell me about them they look very close though.

Bbi: Yes they are and they have always been. Kranti and shubhankar have been the best of friends since childhood.

R: Shubhankar of so that's the name of his perceived competition. Oh I didn't not know that. Kranti never told me about him.

Bbi: Infact they use to be so close to each other and use to take such good care of each other that I always use to say that we will get them married once they grow up.

R: What.. (He tried to get up the very statement had hit him hard in his gut.) My kranti married to another guy. He gave a lond hard look to shubhankar who was sitting and chatting with some kids around and playing games with them.

He is indeed a very good looking guy. He could have stirred any woman's heart but he needs to get away form My Kranti. She is mine and only mine.

Bbi: Raj you love her a lot isn't it.

R: Yes, but she …

Bbi: I know her I have brought her up and trust me she like you a lot. I have seen her looking at you form the side of her eyes. She gets worried if something happens to you. In the morning when I told you to take a bath in cold water, she stood there worried for you, she knew it that you will not be able to manage. My son she is hurt and is in pain I have seen that in her eyes and it is upto you to turn it into happiness and then no one can stop her liking and care for you form turning into love. Don't lose hope like that.

Raj felt much better after talking to badi bi.

He got up to go inside.

Bbi: Raj let me tell you something that the way to Kranti's heart is acceptance and submission.

He looked at the wrinkled face and smiled.

R: Thanks a lot.
