Part -5
Mayank stopped the SUV in the porch , got down , walked towards the passenger side & helped Nupur out. she gasped with pain as soon as her injured foot touched ground. she hobbled up the steps with Mayank supporting her . climbing even those 3 steps was sheer agony. Mayank helped her to the sofa & calling for Raghu kaka went towards the kitchen.
Nupur sat there looking at her foot & thinking gloomily* what a time to injure myself , how will i manage now.*
"bring all those things upstairs kaka." said Mayank coming back in the hall. he was followed by Raghu kaka.
"shall we go up to your room Nupur??" asked Mayank . Nupur looked doubtfully at her foot & the stairs . she just nodded her head uncertainly.
Mayank came towards her ,put one arm against her shoulders & other under her knees & picked up Nupur without any visible effort. Nupur was startled out of her wits.
" M.. Mayank !!! what are you doing ??" she stuttered. " what does it look like i am doing Nupur??" asked Mayank a little impatiently." i don't think you will be able to manage these stairs with your hurt ankle. so i am taking you up to your room. take some rest & we will put some ice on the foot . your foot will be as good as new soon"
"b..but..."trailed Nupur,falling silent as Mayank looked her in eyes. " but what?? you cannot manage it on your own , so that leaves Raghu kaka & me. i don't think we should ask Raghu kaka to carry you all the way up at his age. right?? " asked Mayank smiling naughtily. Nupur laughed at this.
as they reached the foot of stairs Mayank said smiling, " you can hold on to my shoulders Nupur. i don't bite, you know."
Looking at the winking dimple on Mayank's cheek Nupur put her arms around his shoulders hesitating a little. within a few minutes Mayank carried Nupur to her room . He put her down on her bed gently. then put a pillow behind her back & tucked one under her injured foot elevating it.
Raghu kaka knocked on the door & entered carrying a tray. the tray held an ice bag , a strip of tablets , water jug & two glasses.he put the tray on a bed side table. " Thanks Kaka." said Mayank . " may we have some tea ,kaka." " of course Beta , i will go make it then bring it up ." replied kaka.
Mayank settled at the foot of bed with the ice bag ,he put Nupur's injured foot on his knee & started applying the ice bag to the swollen area. Nupur felt a bit awkward but she refrained from saying anything because by then she knew how Mayank would react. the ice bag felt heavenly on her sore ankle. She just sat back & watched him do the job on hand with full concentration.
Kaka walked in holding a tray . he set it down & poured out two cups ,handed one each to Mayank & Nupur. Mayank put away the ice bag . Kaka picked up a plate that held sandwiches ,offering them to Nupur ,he said " here bitiya ,you need to eat something ,before taking the medicine . you should never take meds on an empty stomach." Nupur picked up a sandwich thanking kaka. Mayank did the same. they had their tea ,talking about general things.
Mayank took out a pill from its wrapper & gave it Nupur along with a glass of water. " you take some rest now Nupur , i am going down. just call if you need anything." "thanks Mayank !!! for every thing ,for taking care of me." said Nupur. Mayank waved it off & picking up the tray which held the tea things walked out.
* can he get any better ??* thought Nupur looking at him . * i wonder why is he still single?? girls around here must be blind or something.* then laughing at her own thoughts Nupur pulled up a sheet over & settled down.closing her eyes she went over the list in her head ,about the articles she wanted to write after her sabbatical.
with in a few minutes she drifted between the stage of sleep & awareness.
she felt a hand on her forehead pushing back her hair & a voice murmuring softly," i will always be there for you Nupur." she sighed in her sleep unable to decide whether it was real or her dream again.
