oh caroline...why would you even start a topic like this? do you want me to cry? no no, be honest here...is that what you want me to do? bawl like an inconsolable baby???

of all the classics to tamper with, (sorry, being way too kind here), to butcher, why PnP?

first things first...you start off by calling PnP a play...(cringe cringe cringe, knife through my heart and thorough embarrassment!) then you pick someone like sheena to play the character jane...the sweet, timid, shy, honorable jane. the one who actually restrains our firebrand liz. liz is smart, liz is spunky, liz is cocky and there is a reason why there is friction between liz and darcy. were we ever going to see that? the dynamics where darcy is the reason bingley turns his back on jane? our jane here doesn't seem the type who would be heartbroken! she would be a classic candidate for the recent fast track ads...move on man!! she would probably be shimmying her near bare legs and completely bare arms around another man in no time. and where is the liz-wickham interaction? isn't that encounter crucial? (the knife in my chest has now traveled to my stomach and is slowly winding my gut around its blade!)

were they ever going to show us that darcy's greatest grouse against liz is the one that is not said explicitly? she gets to him like nobody else and he hates that a woman in that day and age could speak her mind so openly, sometimes brashly, lacks his social standing and yet she appeals to him!

so here you were...with the actual screenplay of the show very similar to PnP, the very proud and in someways, also prejudiced mayank, the sassy nupur, the sweet, shy, sincere gunjan, the suave, smooth samrat, the loves to be diva diya and the bad bad boy RV...yet, when they finally admit to the obvious inspiration and cloak it in the guise of a play, there is zero fidelity to the original!

i do hope they realize that if someone decides to, the creatives can be sued on various counts! most significantly, causing Jane Austen to rise from her grave and haunt anybody who chooses to mess with her greatest work in the future!

And I looooooooove this para the most! Oh if they'd shown this with MN in the show, just imagine how amazing it would've been😍....I'm such a sucker for all that hidden undercurrents stuff....if shown well....oh it could have been so brilliant! *sigh sigh sigh* :((

@ anu...you know how it is with PnP and me...an actually 'passionate' love affair that has been raging for the last 18 years or so. i was just mentioning to kavya the other day, who my ritual of reading the book once a year is now completely ruined thanks to what MJHT has done! it was all fine when the inspiration was implicit just for viewers to theorize on, but when you say you are using PnP for a stage adaptation and then show us this travesty, it makes me want to kill myself!

remember that jane austen was a feminist and even in that day and age, writing about marriage largely, she never stopped herself from adding her own tongue in cheek two bits about how ridiculous she thought the whole finding a suitable husband was a woman's ultimate goal! her women were all smart but with their flaws...if liz had her pride, emma had her holier than thou interference! there is so much more to liz than just her garrulousness. she is talkative for a reason, because she has the confidence in her intelligence to do so. liz would never doubt her worth.

*edit* caroline, you know how long i stayed single thru my teen years cos my darcy hadn't come for me??? sigh!! there goes the greatest romantic fantasy to date!

@ mads...thank you so much!

caroline, i mentioned this to kavya...i decided to make literature my vocation after i read PnP, which was my first ever classic in a non abridges version...can you imagine how much it hurts me then?

actually this one time we can demand an explanation from the creatives. what they do with tgheir show is their call, we can choose to watch and enjoy, watch and complain or not watch at all. but they have absolutely no right to mess around with a classic lile PnP.

note that when chhadda made BnP, she was completely faithful to the story and characterization. what happened thereafter was a disaster, but at least she didn't make jane wear a tube dress...

@ paragraph 1: *sighhhh*....that is exactly how I wish they'd shown Mayank falling in love with Nupur. And those lamo monologues the two of them got. 🤢🤢 Where did the subtleness go?
@ paragraph 2: I just LOVEE the way you said that!! TOTALLY yaar!! Gosh...it makes me so sad to realize just how true everything you just said is.
I wonder if the creatives have even read PnP?? 😕

jane is supposed to be the more somber one of the two!!!!!!!!!!!! how CAN JANE DRESS like that!!!

aarti..PnP was the second novel I ever read in my life..my first was Little WOmen...... I can see that.. the beauty of the book is in its unabridged version!

If ONLY atleast AN ATTEMPT was made to bring in a semblance of PnP! ..they didnt even TRY!
