Part 1: The Drive
"I watched you last night while you slept,
All night, the soothing breathing,
but I could not gather you openly in my arms,
so I put my heart at your feet,
step over it if you may,
but hold it, even if just once!"
************
The night is cold and breezy, all chaos and conflicts silenced, as if inviting lovers to relish in the silence of the night and make the most of it. Driving on what seemed to be an abandoned highway, a young man steals glances at a woman who pensively observed the full moon. A beautiful night indeed.
"Saree Ka Dukaan, is this your first camping trip?" asks Raghav, breaking the silence.
"It is. I always wanted to go but Dada would not allow, he didn't trust the girls and boys of my college", smiled Pallavi, pretending to make peace with her circumstances. Raghav did not fail to notice the smile fading away almost immediately.
"Aren't you glad we are escaping for the night, after everything we've been through in the past few days? I surely am, I cannot handle that family drama anymore" laughed Raghav, relaxing in his seat after striking a successful conversation.
"You know, I didn't think of it, but I truly needed an escapade. Thank you for arranging this, Raghav", she said, slightly holding his left arm, extending her gratitude.
"Anything for you my dear!"
Raghav covers her hand with his and almost immediately, she withdraws.
"Both hands on the wheel and eyes on the road please!" she uttered nervously.
"As you say my dear!"
"Stop calling me "my dear", you sound like a proud Englishman" chided Pallavi.
"Really, then what endearments do you prefer, my dear?" asked Raghav in mirth.
"Saree Ka Dukaan is just fine"
Pallavi and Raghav burst out laughing though there was nothing funny about anything they just said. Sometimes, laughter is a saving grace, paving way for the obvious and unsaid tension to release.
***********
They were slowly approaching the country side. Buildings were left behind in the city and what was now left were beautiful cottages. So peaceful, thought Pallavi. She looked outside the window, admiring the homeliness of the surroundings.
"What are you thinking, Pallavi?"
"Hmm..."
Raghav let her be. He knew that one tends to be absentminded during road trips and he wanted her to live all her dreams, if that is what makes her happy. He reaches out for the music system, maybe she'd like that.
"No, let it be. I don't want to listen to any music right now" she spoke calmly, still looking out of her window.
"Are you sure? I thought you loved music" asked Raghav inquisitively.
"I do. But not today" she spoke with conviction.
"Why so?"
"The distance between us,
Filled with silence and night,
Thick with want and love,
If only one of us could cut through it with a knife,
Let all the love bleed into our soul,
But for now,
I cherish the sound of your heartbeat,
No melody surpasses the sound of your beating heart.
Silent nights and you, it's all I need"
*****************
"Watch out!" shouted Pallavi, scrunching her eyes closed. A heavy vehicle passed them, honking as if possessed by the spirits lurking in the darkness of the night.
"Hey, it's okay, it wasn't in our lane" assured Raghav, gently squeezing her cold hand.
It was then realization dawned upon Raghav, watching Pallavi's terrified face intently even after minutes had passed since she screamed. Ghosts from the past have an innate habit of making its way into our present at the most inappropriate times. Raghav recalled how he tortured Pallavi out of a gross misunderstanding. Guilt washes over him once again, for hurting this innocent girl he's come to love with all his heart and soul. It must have been devastating for anyone to recall such a gruesome and cruel incident. His conscience berates him, again.
"I'm sorry Pallavi" spoke Raghav, guilt obvious in his tone.
"For what? I'm fine now, don't worry" she said, assuring Raghav, but he knew better than to fall for her false assurances.
"Not for now, you know what I'm talking about. I should not have treated you in such a brutal way, tying you up and leaving you on the empty road. I am genuinely sorry Pallavi", Raghav spoke in a pained voice, his voice breaking as he spoke her name.
"I have already forgiven you Raghav. But the fear from that day seems to have found a place in my heart and I want to forget it. I really do. Give me closure, Raghav. Why did you do that?" She asked, her heart hurting for bringing this up in what was meant to be a relaxing escapade.
"I was mistaken, as usual. You know me, I don't think, rather I explode senselessly" he spoke, laughing sardonically, not wanting to hurt her anymore than he already did by mouthing his dense assumptions of her.
"Who is Anjali?"
The car comes to a halt.
"We've arrived. Let's go?"
"You didn't answer my question, Raghav. Come on, tell me. Please?"
Raghav looks down and sighs. He owes it to her, he finally thought.
Looking up, he spoke again, with soft sincerity, "I will, I promise. But let's set up everything?"
She nodded in affirmation, willing to wait until he's ready to take the plunge into a past that haunts both of them.
Raghav leads the set up and puts up the camping tent, makes a bonfire and gets all the cooking items out but not without continuously glancing at Pallavi at intervals, who was now sitting on the camping chair he opened a few minutes ago. Beautiful, is all he could think of every time he looked at her. Purity of her heart illuminating her moonlike face, he's never seen a more beautiful girl in his existence. Looking up at the stars, he silently thanks the God's up there for giving him a chance to be a better person, by giving him this loving and forgiving woman.
The journey was a long one. Tired and in need for a good stretch, Raghav finally sits down on the makeshift sitting he had carefully weaved out of dry grass, covered by a soft blanket. As he stretched his arms and legs and massaged his neck, Pallavi watched him intently, wondering how one person could have several shades, ranging from volcanic anger to calmness that would put to shame the full moons' ambiance. But more than any of that, she wondered how she fell in love with him, in spite of everything they've been through. She watched longingly, observed how he closed his eyes, almost as if wanting to capture the beauty of the moment and the peace of this silence. Moments passed in complete silence, as both of them were consumed by thoughts of the other, the past, their misgivings and the love they now held secretly in their hearts.
"Raghav, who is Anjali?"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi everyone.
I'm back with another story, this will be a three shot and I'll be done with it by tomorrow. I've finally gotten through my hectic schedule and I now have some time to pursue writing, which I love.
This time, I've thought of dialogue. It's important, and it's intimate, maybe more than the physicality of a relationship because talking is when you walk through the heart and mind of the one you love. Also, they're going for a small holiday, because they NEED a break 😆
Also, this time, the poetry is mine because I love poetry too😆. I also love reading your comments, so do drop in your comments.
Regards,
Kiara
