Part 1: The Drive

"I watched you last night while you slept,

All night, the soothing breathing,

but I could not gather you openly in my arms,

so I put my heart at your feet,

step over it if you may,

but hold it, even if just once!"

************

The night is cold and breezy, all chaos and conflicts silenced, as if inviting lovers to relish in the silence of the night and make the most of it. Driving on what seemed to be an abandoned highway, a young man steals glances at a woman who pensively observed the full moon. A beautiful night indeed.

"Saree Ka Dukaan, is this your first camping trip?" asks Raghav, breaking the silence.

"It is. I always wanted to go but Dada would not allow, he didn't trust the girls and boys of my college", smiled Pallavi, pretending to make peace with her circumstances. Raghav did not fail to notice the smile fading away almost immediately.

"Aren't you glad we are escaping for the night, after everything we've been through in the past few days? I surely am, I cannot handle that family drama anymore" laughed Raghav, relaxing in his seat after striking a successful conversation.

"You know, I didn't think of it, but I truly needed an escapade. Thank you for arranging this, Raghav", she said, slightly holding his left arm, extending her gratitude.

"Anything for you my dear!"

Raghav covers her hand with his and almost immediately, she withdraws.

"Both hands on the wheel and eyes on the road please!" she uttered nervously.

"As you say my dear!"

"Stop calling me "my dear", you sound like a proud Englishman" chided Pallavi.

"Really, then what endearments do you prefer, my dear?" asked Raghav in mirth.

"Saree Ka Dukaan is just fine"

Pallavi and Raghav burst out laughing though there was nothing funny about anything they just said. Sometimes, laughter is a saving grace, paving way for the obvious and unsaid tension to release.

***********

They were slowly approaching the country side. Buildings were left behind in the city and what was now left were beautiful cottages. So peaceful, thought Pallavi. She looked outside the window, admiring the homeliness of the surroundings.

"What are you thinking, Pallavi?"

"Hmm..."

Raghav let her be. He knew that one tends to be absentminded during road trips and he wanted her to live all her dreams, if that is what makes her happy. He reaches out for the music system, maybe she'd like that.

"No, let it be. I don't want to listen to any music right now" she spoke calmly, still looking out of her window.

"Are you sure? I thought you loved music" asked Raghav inquisitively.

"I do. But not today" she spoke with conviction.

"Why so?"

"The distance between us,

Filled with silence and night,

Thick with want and love,

If only one of us could cut through it with a knife,

Let all the love bleed into our soul,

But for now,

I cherish the sound of your heartbeat,

No melody surpasses the sound of your beating heart.

Silent nights and you, it's all I need"

*****************

"Watch out!" shouted Pallavi, scrunching her eyes closed. A heavy vehicle passed them, honking as if possessed by the spirits lurking in the darkness of the night.

"Hey, it's okay, it wasn't in our lane" assured Raghav, gently squeezing her cold hand.

It was then realization dawned upon Raghav, watching Pallavi's terrified face intently even after minutes had passed since she screamed. Ghosts from the past have an innate habit of making its way into our present at the most inappropriate times. Raghav recalled how he tortured Pallavi out of a gross misunderstanding. Guilt washes over him once again, for hurting this innocent girl he's come to love with all his heart and soul. It must have been devastating for anyone to recall such a gruesome and cruel incident. His conscience berates him, again.

"I'm sorry Pallavi" spoke Raghav, guilt obvious in his tone.

"For what? I'm fine now, don't worry" she said, assuring Raghav, but he knew better than to fall for her false assurances.

"Not for now, you know what I'm talking about. I should not have treated you in such a brutal way, tying you up and leaving you on the empty road. I am genuinely sorry Pallavi", Raghav spoke in a pained voice, his voice breaking as he spoke her name.

"I have already forgiven you Raghav. But the fear from that day seems to have found a place in my heart and I want to forget it. I really do. Give me closure, Raghav. Why did you do that?" She asked, her heart hurting for bringing this up in what was meant to be a relaxing escapade.

"I was mistaken, as usual. You know me, I don't think, rather I explode senselessly" he spoke, laughing sardonically, not wanting to hurt her anymore than he already did by mouthing his dense assumptions of her.

"Who is Anjali?"

The car comes to a halt.

"We've arrived. Let's go?"

"You didn't answer my question, Raghav. Come on, tell me. Please?"

Raghav looks down and sighs. He owes it to her, he finally thought.

Looking up, he spoke again, with soft sincerity, "I will, I promise. But let's set up everything?"

She nodded in affirmation, willing to wait until he's ready to take the plunge into a past that haunts both of them.

Raghav leads the set up and puts up the camping tent, makes a bonfire and gets all the cooking items out but not without continuously glancing at Pallavi at intervals, who was now sitting on the camping chair he opened a few minutes ago. Beautiful, is all he could think of every time he looked at her. Purity of her heart illuminating her moonlike face, he's never seen a more beautiful girl in his existence. Looking up at the stars, he silently thanks the God's up there for giving him a chance to be a better person, by giving him this loving and forgiving woman.

The journey was a long one. Tired and in need for a good stretch, Raghav finally sits down on the makeshift sitting he had carefully weaved out of dry grass, covered by a soft blanket. As he stretched his arms and legs and massaged his neck, Pallavi watched him intently, wondering how one person could have several shades, ranging from volcanic anger to calmness that would put to shame the full moons' ambiance. But more than any of that, she wondered how she fell in love with him, in spite of everything they've been through. She watched longingly, observed how he closed his eyes, almost as if wanting to capture the beauty of the moment and the peace of this silence. Moments passed in complete silence, as both of them were consumed by thoughts of the other, the past, their misgivings and the love they now held secretly in their hearts.

"Raghav, who is Anjali?"

Part 2: The Passage.

Part 3: Falcon, rise!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone.

I'm back with another story, this will be a three shot and I'll be done with it by tomorrow. I've finally gotten through my hectic schedule and I now have some time to pursue writing, which I love.

This time, I've thought of dialogue. It's important, and it's intimate, maybe more than the physicality of a relationship because talking is when you walk through the heart and mind of the one you love. Also, they're going for a small holiday, because they NEED a break 😆

Also, this time, the poetry is mine because I love poetry too😆. I also love reading your comments, so do drop in your comments.

Regards,

Kiara

Part 2: The Passage

Raghav, who is Anjali? Pallavi walks over to where Raghav is and sits down next to him, shoulder to shoulder. Raghav takes a deep breath, knowing that this is going to one excruciating discussion, for he was wrong, once again. The guilt of wronging the person you love takes away all the peace from one's life and all that is left is the constant fear of being a victim of your own impulsive nature, helplessly submitting to the whims of a cynical mind.

Pallavi, I want to tell you but..."

But you fear I will misunderstand you? Pallavi interrupted.

"No, not just that" he spoke, fidgeting with the grass on which he sat, not wanting to look at her questioning eyes. If only there was a way to undo everything he thought!

"Then what is it that is making you so anxious. Was she your girlfriend? Did you love her? Asked Pallavi, slightly nervously, the obvious sting of jealousy hidden behind a calm exterior, not that she was not aware of the fact that he did have a few women in his life, but to come face to face with an explicit name does shatter one's spirit and confidence.

"What!!No I did not love her, not at all. She wasn't even my girlfriend" spoke Raghav exasperatedly, slightly uncomfortable with the turn of events. He never loved anyone, at least till Pallavi walked into his life like sunshine, his guiding light, like an angel, just that he was nothing like her, rather quite opposite of an angel.

Not getting any response from him, she held his shoulder and urged him to face her.

"Raghav?"

"I think we should start cooking, what say?" Raghav smiled nervously, wanting to escape from this uncomfortable situation.

Pallavi gauged his emotion and understood that he needs more time to come to terms with the fact that he had erred gravely and needs to find his bearing before he confides in her. It's almost humorous to think that the then oppressor now needs assurance, thought Pallavi.

"Okay" she said, getting up.

Raghav held her hand while he remained seated.

"Thank you for understanding. I am truly ashamed of myself Pallavi. But I promise you, I will speak about it and you will get closure. It's a gentleman's promise!" spoke Raghav, getting slightly emotional, holding back the angry tears threatening to blur his vision. Angry at himself for being so impulsive, angry at being so volatile and angry at about almost everything about his tumultuous personality. One would almost misconstrue his plight as self pity though that was far from the truth. Self loath was more apt.

"Come on, get up and start cooking. I will not be cooking today" chimed Pallavi, waiting for a retort from Raghav. To her surprise, he obliged which made her wonder if her Ghamandi Rao knew anything of cooking. She'll find out, in a short while. The thought of Raghav burning the food amused her, making her chuckle.

"What? I can cook, I'll show you. It's one of my five best traits. Remember the list?"

"I do! Don't go there!"

Well, you didn't let me demonstrate my first skill, at least I can demonstrate my second!" flirted Raghav, smirking his way up to the camping stove, leaving behind a profusely blushing Pallavi who attempted to ignore his comments but his blatant need to occasionally flirt with her left her aphonic, while he flicked her nose as he walked past her.

Lighting the camping stove, Raghav prepared all the ingredients for the dishes he had already planned to prepare for Pallavi. Whatever made her think that he'll ask her to cook on a camping trip! It's an unsaid rule of camping, the men cook while the women take in the sight of their lovely husbands or boyfriends in their domesticated avatar. First on the menu was foil wrapped sweet potatoes and chili, which of course was not meant for him, rather for his feisty wife! Second was campfire nachos, a compulsory treat and third was chicken Pad Thai, the main course. He went up to the bonfire to roast a few cobs of maize and a few potatoes just to have them a munching feast.

Pallavi observed Raghav, fully engrossed in his work. This is what she adored about him, his unparalleled focus. No wonder he made it big, she thought. To her surprise, Raghav seemed to be extremely dexterous, his nimble fingers handling all the food items delicately. She wondered if he was a chef once!

"Where did you learn how to cook so well? You're truly amazing Raghav!" exclaimed Pallavi as she moved closer to where he was.

"You know, I could not even boil an egg. Amma used to scold me every time but I refused to grow up. I loved that she cooked for us, it was a beautiful feeling to have someone feed you" he spoke happily, almost as if he was taken back to the past, his safe haven in the name of a loving family.

Pallavi could sense what was going to come next and thought of not interrupting him as he became pensive, recalling his past.

"Isn't it a shame how I lost everything I ever had because of my misguided notion of richness? Amma renounced me after that incident. I had nowhere to go so I worked at a restaurant for six months. They used to call me "Chotu". There are so many "chotu's in our country......makes me want to beat up everyone who mistreats the chotu's who only want to put food on their tables....." Raghav was getting carried away by a seething anger as he recalled his initial days in this city.

Pallavi was quick to jump in, as she held a hot potato to distract him, pretending to be burnt.

"Ouch"

"Be careful! It's hot! Come here, I'll apply some ice", anger forgotten, Raghav rushed to her side with ice. Pallavi smiled, her stint was successful. It was easy to distract Raghav, she took a mental note of this, though it's a trait she had already witnessed in all their past encounters. He has the focus of a cheetah and he's quite whimsical at the same time. What a man!

"Let's eat! Food is ready. Presented by yours truly" he bowed like a gentleman.

"Do the honors please", Pallavi was quick to play along to this new found comfort between them.

Both of them munched on the delicacies he had prepared with love. Indeed, the tastiest food is one made out of love! As Pallavi reached out for more of the chicken pad thai, Raghav got up to serve her, as she watched in amazement, wondering how one man can be so much more than the initial monster she had encountered. Which brought her back to her initial question, but now hesitant to ask, for she did not want to ruin this moment they were having.

A few moments spent in silence, with Raghav occasionally pointing out the various constellations in the night sky, both of them seemed to rejoice in the moment, thankful for the escapade. Pallavi was dumbstruck as to how much he knew about the galaxies and stars, something she adored too as she found her companionship in these ever sparkling stars every time she was distraught or feeling lonely. After all, life did not give her many reasons to smile!

Silence is a beautiful, especially when its not uncomfortable. It conveys more than words, bringing out silent sighs and occasional shy smiles, as if speaking to each others soul without looking at one another, as if understanding everything buried deep into each others hearts.

See the stars, as if they speak of us,

Chiding our lonely souls,

Silencing the screams of our hearts,

Holding in the love,

Waiting for yet another star to die,

Granting a wish to needy lovers,

Speak up, now is the time,

Seize the night...

Anjali was not my girlfriend. Remember the MMS scandal? Raghav finally broke the silence.

Pallavi nodded, astounded by the suddenness of the turn of events.

"She stalked me, and when I taught her a good lesson, she framed me by drugging my food. I was unconscious when she took those intimate photos. But at that time, I thought you drugged my food", His words came out slowly, but in an agitated tone.

Shocked at finding out the truth of the MMS scandal, Pallavi wondered how misunderstood he was when it came to his public image. He was a victim too? But how did she become part of this scandal?

"Me?? How could I have drugged your food Raghav? How did you come to that conclusion??!" Pallavi was beyond confused at how all this was shaping up. How could she be a part of that scandal? Drugging someone's food and framing an unconscious man....all this was making her head spin. Before she could ask any other questions, Raghav took a deep sigh and the next words he spoke left Pallavi shell shocked.

"Pallavi, I am Ramaswamy, founder of the old home you once cooked for " spoke Raghav, without looking at her.

Part 3: coming up soon.

Okay guys, so this is part 2. Tell me how you like it! I'm trying to balance the story of Anjali and progressing the understanding between this stormy couple by weaving tiny bits of their past and minute details of what shaped them up to their present form. And all this starts from the first MU they had. Tell me how you like it!

Part 3: Falcon, Rise

I've fallen from grace,

Burnt to the ground, ash and bone

Burning for an eternity, no home

Then you came along,

Wrapped me, oh! your soft wings,

My soul found flight,

In your guiding light,

Come along, fly with me.

"Pallavi, I am Ramaswamy"

HIs words muted Pallavi for minutes, as she tried to process the entire situation. Her early recollections of Mr. Ramaswamy flashing across her eyes, his face clad in red color as she offered him her kerchief to wipe that off while he looked on without taking up on her offer. Even then, he seemed familiar though she could not put a finger to it. Memories of that day were still fresh in her mind for she fed a group of old folks who were abandoned by their children, and their smiles were forever imprinted on her heart. Fate can be cruel, she craved for her parents and then there is another part of this world where children abandon their old parents, as if throwing away old furniture. Raghav took care of them? Her heart warmed up to this new revelation, as a new found respect found its way into her heart for this man. Then who was that man who acted out of sheer barbarity just a day later, tying her up and demanding answers like a rogue? Can angels and demons exist in one person at the same time, with this amount of intensity?

Sitting side by side, Raghav watched her intently as he tried to decipher her feelings after this revelation. No body in his family knew about this old home and the other charity foundations he sponsored. His Nana always told him that there are three kinds of charity. The first one is where one offers help so they can feel good about themselves. The second one is where one offers help so they can show the world that they're nice people. The last kind is the most difficult one, where one offers help without any strings attached. All charities are noble, but the last one is the most revered. Raghav took a moment to internalize this once again and found his answer. He was the last kind, and he had no doubts about it for he never sought any validation from this cruel society, it did not matter to him what others thought of him.

The light from the bonfire occasionally illuminated their faces, allowing them to see each other in the darkness of the night. The revelation silenced both of them for what seemed like a quarter of an hour. The fire was slowly dousing and Raghav got up to sustain it before they fall victim to the biting cold. Pallavi was still trying to gather her thoughts, having spaced out. Raghav was putting in the firewood when he heard her speak in her usual sweet voice, but this time, her voice was slightly pained.

"You are a good man, Raghav, I feel as if all your cruelty was directed towards me. Why so?" she spoke painfully as Raghav looked on, having no answer to her questions.

She continued speaking as he slowly walked towards her and sat down, covering her with a warm blanket and later doing the same for himself.

"I had a difficult time cooking all that food. Do you know, I had to do it all by myself as there was no one who could help me. As luck had it, or should I say, bad luck, I also ran out of cooking gas. It was a stressful day. It all played out perfectly well in the end after I saw satisfied smiles on everyone's faces. I really needed the money and I was very happy that night", Pallavi spoke, transporting herself to that extremely long day. Raghav could not help but sympathize with Pallavi. She had been through so much already, fighting every day to make ends meet. He wondered if anyone in her family ever asked her how she was doing and how she was feeling. The thought of her family, apart from a few members, irked Raghav. He slowly wrapped his hands around her shoulders and brought her head to rest on his shoulders.

She had not resisted but had gone silent. The past cannot be undone. She had already forgiven him a while back though she always wondered what made him act utterly out of character. Now that she found out, there was nothing more she could say.

"I was very angry when I put you through that torture. Amma was going to come live with me and the MMS spiraled everything out of control. I lost my senses completely as I lost that one chance of finally having my family with me"

"Are you justifying what you did?" Pallavi looked up at his face questioningly.

"No, don't misunderstand this. I am just telling you exactly what led me to act in such a cruel way. I can never justify any of that..." Raghav trailed off.

"Hmm....." Pallavi paused and then spoke again "You are an impulsive man, I hope you do know that?"

"I do, and I'm trying to change. For you" He spoke with honesty.

"I don't want you to change for me only. Do it for the innocent people who have never deserved your cruelty"

"Pallavi..."

"I'm not done yet Raghav. Let me finish?" she spoke in an authoritative tone.

"Sorry"

"But most importantly, do it for yourself, you owe it to yourself more than anyone else. Be a better person. Control your anger, Think before you act. Life is never fair for anyone, but not everyone acts harshly" Pallavi finished in a stern tone, now facing him, watching him while he processed her words. She was not going to let him ruin anyone else's life and his own life due to his anger issues.

Everything she said made sense to Raghav. He wondered how someone could go through so much pain, hurt and dejection in life and yet turn out to be kind, gentle and wise, unlike him who got consumed by his pain that he painted everyone in the same light as those who killed his father and brother. Maybe it was finally time he let the past be, make peace with circumstances and move ahead. Turn a new leaf, with Pallavi by his side. A strange fear made it's way in his heart as soon as he thought of her by his side. He wondered if she even loved him as he did, or if she had just accepted this marriage as she had in the past accepted everything fate brought to her doorstep. The escapade was nothing as he had planned. He wished he could undo all his past misgivings and start over.

They looked at each other, as the fire next to them made crackling sounds, neither batting an eyelid.

There is a place between voice and silence,

Where information flows,

In disciplined silence, it opens

In wandering talk, it closes,

Who sees inside from outside?

Who finds hundreds of answers even when minds are deranged?

See through his eyes what he sees,

Who then is looking out from his eyes?

Pallavi reaches out for his hands, knowing that his repentance was not a sham, and seeing him hurting became her undoing. Love is strange if not almost crazy. The presence of the lover enters each others soul without warning and there's no undoing for this pattern. How she wished to tell him that she loved him, but a strange fear made its way into her heart, wondering if she was even his type or he just came to accept this marriage out of circumstances.....She gently let's go off his hands as her eyes tear up, looking away from him.

Raghav sensed that something between them changed in this moment, as if he read the love she held in her eyes for him, or maybe it was only wishful thinking on his part. He wished otherwise and the need to urgently hold her in his arms seemed to overpower his senses. But behold! Lest the impulsive man err again?!

"Are you hurting, Pallavi?" he speaks gently as he reaches out for her lost hands, wanting to comfort her.

"Come near, you so like me,

My love feels held in,

until you asked, do you hurt?

"Not anymore", placing her head on his shoulders, finding safety in the warmth of his dependable arms, letting go of the fears from the past, hoping that time will eventually heal all the wounds and mend her lover into a better version of himself.

Let all hell break loose,

The heavens will handle it,

Speak to your lover what your heart holds in,

Before the moment passes,

And you're left grieving,

Wanting once more, a chance,

To love and be loved...

Rise, falcon

Set flight to your love.

"Pallavi, I love you!" He finally spoke, mustering up all the courage he had left in him, as he held her in his embrace. Pallavi's happiness knew no bounds but she found herself hitting him slightly as she laughed and cried at the same time, confusing Raghav.

"Don't cry, I did not mean to hurt you" he spoke, utterly devastated, his fears finding release in his tears.

"You're a silly man, you know nothing about women and you're so slow!" she spoke, in between her happy sobs, leaving Raghav immensely confused. Sensing that her Ghamandi Rao has not processed anything, she got up and stood next to the bonfire.

"Pallavi, I am sorry....if you don't love me.." he spoke, walking carefully towards her.

"Shut up", she spoke angrily, making Raghav more fearful than he already was.

She took in the joy of her confused Ghamandi Rao, and not wanting to torture him anymore, she put her arms around his neck and what she said next had Raghav in splits, not out of humor but out of relief.

"I love you too, silly man!" smiled Pallavi through her tears, throwing herself in his arms with immense force. Not wanting to waste any other moment, he twirled her around as they laughed and cried together.

"Okay stop, I'm dizzy" laughed Pallavi, urging him to stop, which he complied with immediately but without loosening his grip on her, lest she falls down.

Hand in hand, they walked to the tent as Raghav got in to get the little record player he had brought along. Pallavi raised her eyebrows mischievously.

"Dance with me"

Small edit: I couldn’t help but edit this and mention that the song is “Lag Ja Gale” to start with followed by other melodies numbers. But their first dance is on Lag Ja Gale because I love that song and I doubt if the makers will give this one to us so I’ll just live it all here ☺️

END.

Okay, that's it folks.

Sorry, I really suck at writing romance, there's a certain resistance I always feel when I have to write romantic stuff, I think this is the best I could do 😆And the confession had to be done, that is what they had set out for anyway, without obviously admitting to each other.

Let me know how you like it!! I've not yet proof read it, but I will do so and make corrections.

Kiara, my dear (😂 ) I've always been a little reluctant to comment on your stories only because how good you're with words and I'm not. But, this peom.😍 I couldn't stop myself.

I absolutely love this and I loved Trial by fire. I've re-read the last part of Trial by fire so many times. The last part of that story hits just right in feels and so does this poem. I genuinely loved this poem. Looking forward to read the upcoming parts.

Hi Kiara

two things before anything else. Loved the poems ❤️ and excited to see the discussion on this scene.

You have used the poems very beautifully, to convey whats in their minds easily. I go for the emotions it holds and it had plentiful. You have managed to infuse the few lines with love and more love!

As to the topic they would be discussing, am looking forward to hear it.😊 I am not in minority, to have been bothered with the past incident - keen to see how you handle it.

You have chosen for them to be away, at peace. 👏🏼👏🏼 Is your story setup, a lil ahead from the current storyline? The ‘my dear’ endearment pushes me to ask this.

Kiara, this was wonderful. I loved reading it. I have so many thoughts, I'll be back in bit when I have my laptop on me, but I loved this, and it's focusing on something I so desperately want to see. Thanks for the tag!!

----

I'm back! You've left me so intrigued. So, both of them are in love, and they both have acknowledged it to themselves, lovely! I'm glad they'll be addressing these things, the whole Anjali fiasco is what gave their relationship such a tumultuous foundation, and Pallavi deserves to know. They'd have successfully gotten past the marketplace slap and the burning saris, but after this, it just nosedived.

Also, so glad you addressed the truck incident. Raghav still owes her an apology for that one, a specific one outside of his 'I've wronged you a lot'. The fear and trauma of that incident itself could have landed her in the hospital, She did faint from the stress of it all, poor girl.

I'm so glad they've stepped out on a retreat of sorts, they both deserve the break. But I'm dying to know the circumstances that triggered the need for this, and why there was such melancholy on the way over. Can't wait to read ahead!
