This serial is really close to my heart. I recently got married only to figure out that my father in law is having an affair with his sister in law, my mother in law's sister! Before we got married I knew she lived with my in law's but I thought she only lived there because she got into a fight with her parents. But now I know the truth, my mother in law is just like Devyani. She stayed for her kids, she is always upset which makes me upset as well seeing her in this state of mind. The sad part is the sister is just like Uttara, she doesn't think she is wrong! Disgusting part is all 3 of them sleep in the same bedroom, and I am pretty sure my MIL sleeps on the floor. The worst part about all this is we live in Vancouver Canada! I thought these sort of things only happen in india with women who don't stand up against their husbands and in law's, but even here in a western country sad to say nothing has changed. I have to do something and make this Uttara get out of our lives because I have a baby daughter and I don't want her to think what happens in this house is right!

U know , My Cousin's reality is Vidya's story .. She was betrayed ..But what was worst ..Her husband used to beat her ...She is an educated girl ,But After all that she got divorce and now she is happily married to someone else , who is a great person .

This is where Maryada is the best ...These women can be found in reality .. They are not like Gopu Bahu , Aksharas ..They are real

Navi - Oh, that is so terrible! To think that despite this new age, part of the "modern" folk think so conservatively still. These things happen commonly under the rug in our communities, and unfortunately, women still prefer endurance over justice for the sake of so-called "reputation." I'm sorry to hear about your MIL - I sincerely hope that one day she will come out of her shell of selflessness and grow into re-connect with her true self.

Pia - That is horrible. I am glad to know that your cousin finally stood up for herself.

"Maryada" is epic - it's bold, refreshing, and paints the portrait of characters who are real. I hope that women who watch it will find confidence and self-worth.

Cheers,
dc

Your not alone...my parents got an arranged marriage and they are not happy with each other at all. My uncle is having an affair with his sister in law and his wife knows about and pretends that they are both her best friends (she's more like brahma than devyani though lol) sadly many of these problems exist everywhere. The reality is that men can be pigs, and so can society! That is why maryaada is such a good show, cuz it's real and deep. I live in Vancouver too btw!

Hello everyone,
Just want to share my thoughts. The main reason why women endure rather than fight for justice is because they don't have support to do it. By support, I mean someone behind them and more importantly money support which a woman will need if she leaves her husband because of her husband's bad deeds. Just imagine in today's world and in the past the situation is the same. Women no matter how much they get educated, eventually they have to stay home and take care of their kids. In this process she is at home all the time and is not making any money or security for herself in the event that her husband would do injustice with her. So all of a sudden, how can she fight back because then she will have nowhere to go and nobody to support her. Therefore, she endures everything and stays quiet. In this world everyone out there is looking out for themselves. Nobody can afford to look out for someone extra. Even if the woman's brother took her responsibility, her life would be no better. She will be at the mercy of her sister-in-law. So any way you turn, the loss is your.
DEAD END..

Sorry, If I have offended anyone. Just my opinion.

That's terrible.

Of course, we are not living the 19th Century where women cannot stand up for their rights!

Besides, if you're living in Canda then there's a better way of getting out of this mess! You can go to court asap and get the two punished for their crime, giving your mom-in-law justice. I know I'm talking about following the track of the show currently, but that's a reality check, because you ought to do it!

Good Luck :)

you could see this in any society, not just in India,
there are women out there in every culture who are afraid to speak out, we just have to know our rights and tell those in need that they have rights and to speak out!
