Time and again The Fish target victory of Arjuna has been discribed by many writers with great lan and enthusiasm. The swayamvara itself is heart of Adi parva as the story takes a new direction with the victory of Arjun. The power play in Aryavarth tilts in favour of Pandavas with their alliance with mighty Kampilya. It also is the stepstone of Arjun's success as the best warrior of Aryavarth, proving his dominance over others and paves way for many more achievements of Arjun in future. It is the favourite bedtime story that many of us listen from our Dadis or Nanis. Most of the writers put their soul and heart to describe Arjun's victory and make the incident an interesting read. very few writers undermine the significance and importance of describing the way it got pierced with dedication, precision and focus. The writer of Arjun without Doubt Doctor Sweety Shindey did a commendable job with her superb writing skills. Similarly Km Munshi,in his The Five Brothers. Presented it in an engrossing style. I would like to post some of his lines that showcases Arjun's confidence, love for archery and focus. ...'Before the fascinated gaze of the assembly ,the young Brahmin blessed Draupadi and DhrishtaDyumn by raising his hand as he passed by them, and protrasted himself before Guru sandipani who blessed him with words ' may you be victorious. With brisk steps he walked to the pool ,measured the distance to the target with one swift glance and looked at its reflection in the pool. With a deft twist of his left hand,...the young Brahmin was left handed,...he caught the shaft of the bow in the middle, lifted it with a graceful movement, transferred it to his right hand, took the string and tied it with expert skill. Nothing mattered to him now. The weapon he loved the most was in his hands and his imagination could see the whirling target even better than his eyes could. Every one caught his breath. Draupadi had seen the young Brahmin and admired the dignity and confidence with which he had walked to the pool . Fascinated by the light shining in his magnetic eyes ,she was waiting breathlessly for the outcome. He stepped to the pool with a firm step looked at the target's reflection in the pool, drew the taut catgut string back to his left ear and offering mute homage to Guru Dron and Krishna shot the arrow. The assembly gasped. The arrow sped ,caught the whirling fish in the eye and cut it away from the revolving disc with neat precision. The fish fell into the pool below with a splash. As Arjuna was placing the bow on the sacred grass,Draupadi her eyes glowing with excitement came to him bash fully and placed the garland round his neck...every time I read this vividly described action filled, rendering of the cult moment,I feel ecastic. Arjun's every action that lead to the mind blowing feat is brought before our eyes with honesty and sincerity. Veda vyasa's master piece, the Fifth Veda will continue to rule the hearts generations together through such praise worthy writers who retell the events with such loyalty. I pity those select few writers who can not do justice to such riveting moments that live forever in our minds.

For all this wives or Draupadi in particular. I have read and re-read the Vyas's work but I can't seem to determine. I do know he favoured Subaddra more...her being Krishna's sister and mother of Abhimanyu, but who did he favour the most? It keeps playing in my mind?

I totally agree with what you have written. The way the feat was portrayed, it brings the actual scenes vividly to our minds. When I read it the 1st time many years ago, I felt as if I was part of the feat and not a reader 100s of years later.

In your case, wow! you did a super job in summing up Arjun's feat in your posting...super good

I wish you read this thread from the beginning. It may help you decide whom did Arjuna love more.

Also, I think it is important to address the important point that how do you perceive Love to be :
Do you imagine it to be the lovey - dovey romance like shown in most of the movies & novels based on concepts of love at first sight, family revolt, rich boy - poor girl, etc.

Or do you imagine it to be a worship or a life long process which needs alot of devotion, understanding, space, sacrifices, silences than words.

I think this is how the perception of Arjun being closer to Draupadi or Subadhra has evolved over the years. As people in India are evolving & becoming more educated & informed about the true meaning of love.
If you see Arjun - Subhadra relationship, thanks to RajaRavi Verma's painting, is seen more like a prince charming sweeping a princess off her feet & they lived happily ever after. No depth is seeked, no further nuances are asked or understood.

However, Arjun- Draupadi relationship is the more evolved, mature & layered one which starts on a movie like romance but takes alot of twisty curvy turns to become a fully blossomed picture. Somewhere I feel most of the people take Arjun to be the main husband of Draupadi at first go so the acceptance of them together is always there but the incidents around them makes people feel complicated about relationship. However I do think the beauty & the attachment & justification lies in this complexity.

As someone has pointed out earlier - this was one of the major reason StarBharat was widely acclaimed coz they got the ArDi angle bang on with their understanding of depth.
I do hope that from now on scholars & portrayers will respect their relationship with same intensity & build further on it.

I agree with your interpretation of Arjun- Subhadra and Arjun - Draupadi love. Yes. Draupadi-Arjun love is not a fairy tale romance. As you said that the beauty, the justification and attachment lies in the complexity. Like you mentioned their love evolved with time and stood the test of most trivial situations, unending long spells of separation, and norms and principles that estranged them in their prime youth . Still they made the fragrance of their love spread generations ahead to be inhaled .Truely StarBharat did contribute in elevating the much desired love angle between both. As per scholars respecting their relationship, I do feel there will be naysayers who feel sceptical to accept Their mutual love.

Munshiji's presentation of The piercing of fish target inspires many and as our good hearted reader described.,it really makes us feel we existed in that era watching Arjun's live action before our eyes. Happy to know some one else also felt the same way as I did. As far as my knowledge goes without demeaning the authors whom I did not read, barring the original Epic, this comes so nearer to the real event.Really thank Munshiji for making us feel a part of the event. In contrast Maggi Lidchi Grasse simplified the event as she narrated it through Aswathama's vision. ...Meanwhile the Brahmin had made a pradakshina of the great bow. He now prostrated before it,invoked the giver of favours and picked up the bow without difficulty. There was only one man who handled the bow like this. The Brahmin strung the bow and gave it a testing pluck with ear cocked ,learning from the sound. Before any one knew that he had taken the aim, there was a clatter and something came tumbling down through the hole in the mechanism...Stunned I saw Draupadi walk up to him and place the garland round his neck...well the cult scene was interpreted as per their imagination by different authors but by far Munshiji's version is the best and closest to the reality. At least we can assume so .

The legend of Nara,Narayana aS DESCRIBED BY VEDVYAsa throws light on the inseparability of Krishna and Arjun. The supreme Lord Narayana takes birth as sages, the sons of Dharma. Elsewhere it is described that Supreme Lord Narayana takes birth as sage Narayana for a special purpose.he did severe penance and pleases Siva.Nara is born through his penance.Tasyaiva tapasa Jatam Naram Nama minim . ...Janihyarjunam Sada.Nara incarnated as Arjuna on the earth. This certainly ascertains the duo's love for each other. There is soul connection that makes them identify each other even without meeting before. At the time of swayamvar Krishna identifies Arjun and shows him to Balaram. Likewise Arjun prays to Krishna before shooting the target. Krishnam cha Manasa Kriitva jagraha charjuno Dhanuh. ...This act of them establishes their relationship in mental plane. Surprisingly we don't see Arjun realise his true identity as Nara even if he was told again and again about it. Duryodhana realises the soul connection and says Atma hi Krishnah Parthasya Krishnasyatma Dhananjayah. Krishna's soul is Arjun and Arjun's soul is Krishna. He also says Krishno m Swargalokamapi Thyajet. Tathaiva Parthah krishnarthe prananapi parityajet. Krishna will sacrifice heaven for Parth and Arjun will sacrifice his life for him.The third angle in this is Krishnaa who has a soul connection with both the krishnas. Draupadi's soul connection with Krishna is proved at the time of Vastrapur Haran and Durvasa Episode. With Arjuna of course her soul connection is well established with illustrations.Sunyamiva prapasyami smaranti savyasachinam is the truth of her life Without Savyasachi every thing appears Sunya...vana parv. The three krishnas are dark in complexionThe three krishnas are irresistibly charming. The three krishnas are bold enough to face any situation.and emerge victorious. The three krishnas are extremely kindhearted that they can forgive and forget.Case in point Maya,Jayathrath...the list continues. The three krishnas can not live without each other of course proven fact.

There are five great epics in Sanskrit literature apart from The Ramayan and The Mahabharat, which are Itihasas. Raghu Vamsa,Kumara Sambhava, kiratarjuniyam,Sisupala Vadha and Naishadham.Among them the first two were written by Kalidasa, third by Bharavi, fourth one by Magha and fifth one by Sri Harsha. Bharavi 's kiratarjuniyam was acclaimed by critics for its profound presentation, the style and The storytelling. The famous verse Upama kalidasasya,Bharaverarthagauravam ...indicates the emphasis of conveying good sense rather than arranging symmetrical words in Bharavi's Epic. Arjun is the Mahanayak in the Epic that describes the way he attained pasupatastra from Siva by exhibiting his devotion and valour. Bharavi 's vast Epic consists of 18 Sargas. The first two sargas tell about Vedavyasa's arrival his instruction to Pandavas about getting Devine Astras ...The third sarga describes Arjun preparing to go for penance and his taking leave of Draupadi is described in a wonderful manner. The beginning itself that shows Draupadi's mental agony is simply superb and heart wrenching. The sloka is awesome. . Tushara Lekha kulitotpalabhe, Paryasruni Mangala Bhanga Bheeruh. Agudha Bhavaapi vilokane sa na Lochane Milayitum Viseshe. Draupadi's eyes are like lotuses,The tears in her eyes are like the due drops on the lotuses. She did not tap her eyes even though her eye sight is obstructed by tears. The reason is to prevent the in auspiciousness that may occur if her tears fall down. An expression of superb poetry that exhibit the pain of her heart thinking about the separation, the fear of causing hurdles in his path if her tears fall down, and the inability to look at him heartfully due to the tears in her eyes,...Vedavyasa's great Sequence that brought to life Draupadi's passionate love for Arjuna in Vana parva is rendered by Bharavi with the same feel, same passion but with different construction. Really wins hearts, moves hearts the love of Draupadi.

Bhairavi used upamalankara to describe the beauty of Draupadi's eyes. Simili,we can say. The lotuses are used as comparison.we can assume lotus petals that have resemblance with her eyes. Her tears are compared with due drops on lotus petals. Beauty of comparison that is the symbol of upamalankara used in such an apt description. Not being able to let fall her tears is another gem of a thought attributing it to inauspicious ness that may cause hurdles in his path if tears are allowed to fall. Her pain of not being able to see her beloved is super ceded by her fear of inauspiciousness. Bhairavi the poet par excellence is identified with such great verses that makes him one of the highly talented poets ,India ever produced.
