Regarding BHIMA ...
there is always this game of marginalization ...
among the 5, Nakula-Sahadeva are in margin ...
and among the rest 3, it is Bhima ...
however, luckily we have Folk Mahabharata too ... and there we find the marginalized heroes in their full glory ...
In Garhwali Mahabharata, there are many legends on Nakula-Sahadeva ...
In Folk Mbh of central India, it is Bhima and Bhima .,, (well, our Chhota-Bhima cashes in on this sentiment, no?)
well, Bhima-lovers (including me too ...), pl read the Bhima legends in this beautiful article -
"A Hero of the Mahabharata in Folklore of Central India" by Dr. Mahendra kumar Mishra
... and of course we have Madhavacharya's "Mahabharater Tatparya Nirnaya" ... in which Madhavacharya celebrates Bhima as the central one ..
(I am not allowed to post links by the forum .. so cannot .. pl google)
In Mahabharata too, Bhima's intellectual-side is manifest in debates on Dharma in Vana Parva ...

I would like to know your thoughts on Kunti, one of the most debated characters on this forum. There have been several questions raised on her decisions:
Her leaving infant Karna in the Ganga
Her asking to divide Draupadi without knowing(or did she?)
Her not telling her other sons about Karna, before the war was starting
Her choosing to tell Karna about who he actually was

I might be missing some 😆

Regarding the hero issue, I have something to say.
Is Krishna not the actual hero of MB, I mean the Superhero? After all, He is the Mahabharata-Sutradhara.
As for the other hero, I don't think the number is only one. This is a huge epic, and readers may have different opinions regarding what is its main theme.
If the main theme is Shaanta rasa, then Yudhi is hero. If main theme is Veera rasa, then Arjun is hero. But in second case, Bheem will share a great portion along with his younger brother.
If space is taken into account, then Yudhi should be the hero, as he is the only person having 18 parva long life. All others passed away in previous parvas. Also from the style of Mahaprashthanik & Swargarohan parvas one can easily note that Yudhi gets a very special attention here, which suits an epic hero.
There are readers who even try to establish Karna as 'tragic hero' (I can't understand how or why) or Duryodhan as 'anti hero' (but I think the term anti hero is only applicable for those stories which have no positive hero at all), but I have a strong feeling that hero can be found from Pandava group only. Even Bhishma seems to have a chance but not kauravas.

Krishna doesnt need to be the Hero, he is above all this. If you go by the story of Mahabharat, then its the story of the Kuru family. Krishna comes in way later in the story. It is about the struggles of Pandavas and how they survive everything in the end, to come out as the Victors. Pick one from them.

^^^ I agree. I believe that Krishna is above EVERYONE 😊 and it's He for whom the hero (s) survived till the end ⭐️ He is Mahabharat Sutradhar, the controller of everything & everyone!

Veda Vyasa presents all five brothers as heroes , they all are 'Jaya'
Their secret names in Virat parva :
Jaya, Jayanta , Vijaya, Jayadvala, Jayatsena so they all are heroes . Vyasa says those who want to achieve Vijaya / victory over self , one has to read Jaya!
Who do we want to consider a hero is individual perception .. even the 'anti-heroes' are heroes to somebody...

Not trying to see who is the main protagonist here (For me it will always be Panchali, then Krishna, then Arjun)

[DIV]Urmila mentioned Veer ras. What I was trying to figure out is why is Bheem not called the Mahanayak? Because he had equal if not more of a share of the imperial campaign, reactions in DS, incidents during vanvaas and victories during war. Where did the Mahanayak question originate? And why did it come to rest on Arjun?

Devu, my contribution to your Kunti list. Telling the Pandavas after Karna's death about him? Served no purpose that I can see.

Nobody dismisses Bhim as wishy-washy or supporting-cast.
In fact Vyaas himself does not categorize his characters into heroes or villains - let alone into Mahanayak and vice-Mahanayak.
MB is wide open for everyone to choose their own Mahanayak - and therin lies it's beauty.

AND of course, the female Mahanayak - our fiery Empress Draupadi.
The 3 Krishnas reign at the top, (for me, atleast).
