No, he wanted to win allies against Krishna.

Remember, when the Rajasuya conquests were on, Bhima proceeded to Chedi, and Sishupala was previously a vassal and a favorite of Jarasandha. Sishupala had mixed opinions about him. On one hand, he hated Bhima for killing his mentor Jarasandha, but on the other, w/ JS dead, he needed allies, and so welcomed Bhima. In fact, he even joined Bhima on some of his initial conquests in the neighborhood, lending military support to the Pandavas. After that, Bhima proceeded on his eastward conquests, which included his battle w/ Karna.

At the yagna, however, Bhima did not have any issues w/ Krishna, so Sishupala ran out of luck there. So his various suggestions about alternatives to Krishna, such as Karna, were partly to demean Krishna, but probably also aimed at winning the support of the people he suggested. It was probably secondary that Karna had been subdued by Bhima and would be unable to defeat him if Sishupala went to war w/ Krishna and Bhima joined Krishna's side.

Are there any accounts of any battles b/w Karna & Dhrishtaketu - Sishu's son?
