Not vow, then. But his being jyesht Kuru is also not as important as protecting the weak. I think that would malign his character even more, by making him more prone to protecting blood rather than justice. In any case, Pandavs were also Kurus, so shouldnt he have been neutral if that was his reason? And, I dont think even the most anti Bhishma people would think he was actually siding with evil. I still prefer to think it was ignorance. I think âď¸Krishna was making the point that all it takes for evil to triumph is for a few good people to stay silent (out of ignorance here)
As to the other thing, âď¸Bharat did get to the point and I thought it was pretty well done with a reason for the faith portrayed very obviously
who is the weak here pandavas and draupadi?
1)ok lets see form the beginning when pandavs were kids they and kauravas never got along. They were kids so perhaps bheeshma never got involved in their fights.I mean Bhima used to bully them in turn they tried to poison Bhima many times then as adults lakshagarah happened.
So since there was no vow i think bheeshma didnt know about these plots against pandavs because up until lakshagarah and even after that Bhesshma was largely neutral i mean he didn't have extra affiliation towards pandavs or kauravas.
And once panadavs returned it is infact Bheeshma on whose advice dhritrshatra gave away khandavprsath to pandvas.Because Bheeshma didnt want his grandson's to fight.Perhaps after lakshagarah he relaized that there is some animosity and decided to send away pandavs to avoid any future quarrels
2)Then the whole dyut sabha and VH happened why didnt Bheshma do anything to help draupadi?Well his reason for not helping her the same reason why no one else helped her not even her husbands .I am not saying he was right in not helping he was definitely wrong but his reason was the same as other's
3)the the second dice game happened pandavs were exiled not sure what bheehsma could have done here .Yudhishtir accepted all conditions on his own fully aware of everything
4)then during the thirteenth year of panadavs exile it was actually Bheehsma who helped kauravs find where pandavs could be hiding. Then the virat yudh happened c and on a technical point Dury thought pandavs have failed in their agyaatwas. On his part Bheehsma tried to convince dury a lot to give IP back to panadavs ,to have peace with them, to not fight against poandavs since they were very powerful and righteous he did his best i would say to guide dury but dury didnt listen.Hmm i am not sure if he could have done more than this
5)now comes the war yes he could have not fought the war yet he did and why well i think he tells the reason to yudi when yudi comes to seek his blessings
"Bhishma said, 'If, O lord of the earth, thou hadst not, in this battle come to me thus, I would have, O great king, cursed thee, O Bharata, for bringing about thy defeat. I am gratified (with thee), O son. Do battle, and obtain victory, O son of Pandu, What else may be desired by thee, obtain thou in battle. Solicit also the boon, O son of Pritha, which thou desirest to have from us. If it happens so, O great king, then defeat will not be thine. A man is the slave of wealth, but wealth is no one's slave. This is very true, O king. I have been bound by the Kauravas with (their) wealth. It is for this, O son of Kuru's race, that like a eunuch I am uttering these words, viz.,--Bound I am by the Kauravas with wealth. Battle excepted, what dost thou desire? So i would say as jesht kuru it was his duty to fight for kauravs which he did
6)again on his part even during the war he kept on asking dury to stop the fight and be at peace with panadavs Even on his death bed when karna comes to meet him he tells karan to join panadvas so that the war can come to an end.Personally i think he did as much as he could to avoid the war and save all his grandsons'
7)so basically to summarize as far as his helping panadavs go the reason was never his vow initially eh didn't know about the plots up until lakshagarh so he couldn't do much after that he did what was in his power and send pandavs away to khandavprsath and after that in dyut sabha and all i think yudhishtir caused a lot of his own destruction yes bheeshma could have still done something but options are limited when a person is bent of destroying his own life. After the exile bheeshma did whatever was in his power to stop the war and convince dury to give panadvs IP back personally i dont think he could have done anything more
ANd regarding his ignorance about krishan ji's identity hmm i think he knew yet he decided to fight on the opposite side because of the reason i stated above
