Well Medha it was lovely
but I donot understand the Draupadi Karn angle at any point how can any author take the liberty to ammend her character according to their whims and fancies while the fact remains that she always loved Arjuna .And seriously does Draupadi forgive karna for all the insult because she belives she insulted him so he better insult her?????
I am confused I donot have words to say 😡

Very interesting thread! Just read through quite a few posts...

Of all the books I have so far read which I term MB fiction (novels written based on MB and its characters and main plot), the best one was Parva by S L Bhyrappa. It is a Kannada novel but I managed to get a translation in English to read...what I loved was the narrative style as well as the fact that all things supernatural had been explained in absolutely earthly fashion...like Pandavas' birth, Krishna's divinity, etc. It is the best so far, but I have a list of books still left to read!

The context where it begins is on the eve of the war...and the whole story is given out as reflections of some of the characters like Kunti, Bheeshma, Drona, Shalya, Arjuna, Bheema, Karna, etc, etc. It goes into the war and end of war, just before Yudhishtira's coronation.

I am sure I lost a bit of the original flavor because the translation was a bit stilted, but nevertheless a good read.

Has anyone here read this book?

Thanks Ritu. Gandhari is a very intriguing character and like everyone else in MB, has her share of flaws and virtues

I loved this part also:

What lovely things has nature for me behold
What will I do if I kept a veil to keep me blindfold
Gandhari to me is an enigma a bigger one to kunti and draupadi .A person who takes the royal scourge on herself while veiling hers dogma. The question i always asked myself
Was gandhari just a symbol of ignorance of the human mind.
No it will be a pity if i intend to decipher her character and symbolize her deeper wails with objective simplicity.
Gandhari among the kauravas was the among the best learners of the royal terms.
She knew she had to leave a life of disdain for patronizing the well fare of her children and her husband.
This combined with shakunis motives was enough for her never to let her veil fall and see the outside world.
Was then gandhari a snob like all of us modern day twitters and facebookers who lack the energy to understand the outside world as we put a veil to let others know our fears and moral rejections.
This is gandhari she was pragmatic she never made any mistakes and always made effort to say the right things she was an appropiate empress.
But snobishness led to a 100 thoughts like a 100 sons and then all of them were destroyed although they were all powerful. This means dharma instigates the mind to create verses but with time all this gets destroyed and the one and all thats left is your own consciousness. This is why Gandhari remains a mute when her sons are killed but blames krishna when all of them do so.
Gandhari symbolizes the pragmatism in us a viel of uncertain certainity when the eyes cannot see fully but the mind can understand the action

@bheegi- indeed interesting symbolism of her blindfold as well... eyes cant see..but mind can understand every action.. if you see from a perspective of a mother keeping aside right and wrong, I can understand her outburst which is quite elaboratively written in stri parva ...and even her curse to Lord.. Though She is someone who cud have been a right influence on duryodhan's life.. but instead she chose to remain blind and thus in a way her blindfold symbolises many things.. and somewhere it does relate with those parents who kind of turn their blind eye to what misdeeds their children are doing..and later that turns out to be destructive..
is there any book written on her perspective like others...?

yes, this blog was based on Patnaik's article. I couldn't find the original article as it's been removed. If Patnaik is advising the SP MB team, I'm guessing they know what they are going to show today
