As for Karan wanting to kill Pandavas; there is a school of thought that states that he KNEW Shakti would never harm Arjun. He KNEW the Lord of the Universe protected Arjun. He also knew of his curses and he also knew Indra was going to come and ask for his Shield/Earrings. He also knew that it was the Lord of the Universe who held the secret of his birth and would tell him.

And YET, in his quest for greatness he gave away the Shield. he could have said NO but that would not earn him the tag of danveer Karna. He wanted his name to go down in history; why should Arjun have the glory of being Gandivdhari Arjuna; it was honor and greatness that he sought the most. Honor to be equal to the Pandavas.

And his search for honor is what took him to HP and got Duri to give him Ang raj

Also his issue with being called sudh putra and rejected and thus making it ok for him to insult DPadi. A woman has the right to marry whoever she chooses. One can be friends with everyone in the world but marriage is done amongst those who are equal to you. If had married him her kids would be sut putra ke putra which in those days was not acceptable to any woman of royal birth.

And she had taken a fancy to Arjun and wanted to marry him. Why should this union be prevented by a young man of inferior birth as per her POV?

Anyways the arguments for and against Karna are numerous. Everyone is entitled to what they think.

@Bold: What did he do in his quest for greatness?, He gave his shield because he didn't ever refuse a Brahmin at "that" time of the day, this was his sole reason. In the movie "Oh my god!", There is dialogue by Krishna, "I am a god not because I do magic, I do magic because I am a god", this example maybe stupid but it is applicable here, Karna did not donate his Kavach because he wanted to be a Danveer, He donated it because he was a Daanveer, There is a lot of difference between those two sentences.

So, Everything he did was for fame and nothing had an individual reason. No, he did everything for an individual reason.

The things he did made him great, Not that he did everything to be great.

Sorry for the late reply, I hardly follow this thread.

I agree with you with regards to Karna. He had the chance of turning down such an absurd and presumptuous request. Yet he chose to give away the kavach-kundal. Not only was this irrational as he already knew the real purpose behind Indra's disguise, but he also reduced his chances of surviving in war and helping his friend Duryodhan win. It was eternal glory that was more important to Karna, who always knew that he deserved better than what was due to him, and he knew he would achieve this eternal glory through the danveer tag. He himself says that he wants to go down in history as the greatest danveer when he gives away his most prized possessions. Whether he sought honour befitting the Pandavas, I do not know.
I know it is in a way harsh on Karna, who was also acting according to the norms in his time, where reneging back on your word was looked down upon as a sin. But the various contradictions inherent in his actions become simpler to understand when you impute them to his quest for everlasting renown and respect.

Again these are just my views on Karna.

I think there is confusion about whether Krishna was pro war or not
Here is a citation from RM's version - right after the Pandavs are exiled

When Krishna heard what had happened, he went to the Kamyaka vana to meet the Pandavas. With him came Dhrishtadyumna, the new Chedi king Dhrishtaketu, the Kekaya brothers and a host of Yadavas: Bhoja, Vrishni and Andhaka warriors. Yudhishtira jumped up with a cry of joy when he saw Krishna. Here was the very person he wanted to see: the Dark One who knew the truth of all things, the only one who could comfort him. When they sat together under the wide tree, Krishna said, "The earth is thirsty and only the blood of Duryodhana and Karna, Shakuni and Dusasana will quench her thirst. We are all with you, Yudhishtira, we will not stand for this." There was anger in his black eyes as none of them had seen before. "Why should Draupadi live in the jungle? You need not do this just because they say you must. We all know about Shakuni's dice; he can throw anything he wants with them. I hear you did not win a single throw. You are not bound by the game, not when the dice were loaded. I have the Yadava army waiting at the forest's edge. Dhrishtadyumna, Dhrishtaketu and the Kekayas have brought their legions with them. All Bharatavarsha is incensed: you are her emperor. Let us march on Hastinapura and see how those cowards face us in battle." But Yudhishtira said, "Krishna, I am not innocent in this thing. I have sinned and let this exile be my expiation. When we saw evil omens at the Rajasuya, Vyasa told me I would have fourteen years of misfortune. This is that time . How I wish I could call the days back and not have to play the game of dice. But that is not fate's way and I must pay for my weakness before I am pure again.

Thanks for replying to this post @TheWatcher , it brought to my attention certain views on even generous acts of Karna..
I so agree with bold statement.- "The things he did made him great, Not that he did everything to be great."
He donated his armour coz he was great danveer...he didnt donate it bcoz he wanted to be like it...
I wonder if his quest was only to earn respect and fame , why wud he choose to be on loosing side..when he knew that was the case... He would have ruled over both pandavas and kauravas, had he accepted the offer by Krishna n kunti.. he rejected all that because of his yearn for respect or fame... ? i wonder that thought.. coz doing contrary would have given him much more respect in return ..

Thanks for sharing Bheegi I really liked the Ramesh Menon's perspective on the after math of Vastraharan during their exile it is quite homologus to the KMG texts .I would like to appreciate the question posed by Krishna "Why does Draupadi have to stay in forests?" I truely believe she was the sinless one who was punished along with the Pandav brothers.

Anyone has any citations on Draupadi-Abhimanyu bond? I've heard that Abhi was very close to his badi maa and Draupadiw as most distraught when Abhi died.

hey all, i went thru most pages and found the mentioned books very interesting..i have read Jaya, POI and lesser known series called the "Krishnavatara" by Dr. K.M.Munshi.. i had read the latter as a child and it was the first literary perspective of the MB other than BRC's MB on tv..i wud suggest all to give it a read if u'd like a glimpse of lives of Krishna, the Yadavs, Drupad's family, Jarasandha, even Ved Vyas..its sources are believed to be the Srimad Bhagvad Gita, the VishnuPuran and the MB..it has 7 books, last of which is incomplete coz Dr. Munshi expired before completing it.. the books are : the magic flute, wrath of an emperor, the five brothers, book of bhima, book of satyabhama, book of Ved Vyas and the book of yudhishthira..it was my first "big" book of mythology after Amar Chitra Katha and i had loved the stories mentioned..

@srishti: they are all amazingly written..the innocence of the characters, the magic of Krishna, its all given beautifully.. i liked the bond between Uddhava and Krishna, how satyaki became a friend..when balram courted revathy and their marriage..shaibya is one of Krishna's wives who i have not read of much, she has been given a lot of importance here..even the Pandavas, Kunti, their link to Krishna is given well..the book of bhima has the time period between draupadi's wedding and Indraprastha, given from bhima's POV..to be frank, his characterisation in BRC MB, i had not liked, but in the book, he is like a big cuddly kid..u cnt help but love him..
