Why I like This New Mahabharat

Hi everyone

Even though I am new to the MB forum, I am an old IF member (Sangeeta). I have been following some of the posts on this forum regularly and have watched every episode of this new MB. I grew up with the BRC version and loved it (although I don't remember any details as I was quite young at that time)

I started watching this version because I had heard that they would complete it in 6 months (I hate long running shows) and wanted to familiarize myself with the core story.

Well, neither is the show planning to end within 6 months nor is the core story true to it's original form but even then I have fallen in love with this version.

Why?

1. The OST and BG music. I am a sucker for music and I just love all the original musical tracks in this show. I think they really add to the essence of the characters and the show. In particular, the main MB track, Draupadi (kumari panchali), Krishna's track are very addicting. I hope SP will one day release a CD with all the tracks.

2. The characterization. Even though the details of the story have been altered here and there, I feel the makers have been faithful with the characterization of the various characters. No one is perfect and everyone has a grey side to them-- that's what I have always loved about this epic.

3. The discussions and explanations specially with Krishna gyan. That's the best way to teach Gita- with real examples rather than a sermon.

4. The shuddh Hindi- it's a joy to listen to our wonderful mother tongue

What could be better?

1. The acting. Not all actors are seasoned and some really need to work on their expressions. So far, the actors who have played Satayavati, Gandhari, Bheeshma, Arjun, Krishna and Draupadi are my fav. Even Shakuni does a great job- even though a bit theatrical. Pooja Sharma has grown on me and she does a great job emoting with her eyes.

2. The special effects. Frankly, I don't care for the SE as they distract me from the main characters and story. They are also amateurish IMO

3. Some of the tracks are dragged to eternity. They still have a lot of ground to cover so I hope we will see them expedite some tracks.

Please free to add to this discussion. Hope to make new friends here and engage in some meaningful discussions on one of the best stories in the world.

And I am biased towards Draupadi's character...just in case😉

Hi bheegi. Like yourself,i love anything Mahabharata, so despite this shows many faults, it still has some great aspects of which you mentioned via the fantastic scores/theme music that serve to heighten the various personalities, the show gives focus on developing characters beyond mere descriptions owing mostly to the apt acting performances of particular actors, but as you said not all are up to mark. Id add to that also the wide lens n scenic/picturesque cinematography of natural landscapes, as well as visual fest of settings costumes etc.
The dragging of scenes of course is something that afflicts many here. It becomes increasingly tiresome to bear.

I completely Agree with you too... As i am also in Love with this version ...
I love first meeting of Krishna and Draupadi . and the following meetings too were very good...
I love the concept that the people at that time didn't consider Lord Krishna as a GOD but as a very powerful person... Which is very true ... one Rishi's with special powers or a holy soul can see that otherwise future generations also learned and realized this fact .
I loved the actor doing Shakuni's role ... He justified the character .
First time I realized.. how tough Draupadi's life was! It is so easy to say some foul words against anyone but just to live with those foul eyes , Words n fight with your own feelings was so tough.
The sensitivity and sensibility they show in Draupadi's marriage and excepting them all as her husband is definitely appreciated . I can feel the pain of a female at that era and then come up as a strong identity and stood up for herself was appreciable .

Hi Rangeeni. Nice to 'meet' you. I feel they have done a better job with the characterizations than the BRC version (although as I said my memory is a bit faded from that version) They also do good job of explaining the dharam-adharm dilemmas.

The costumes are loaded...specially poor Draupadi's wedding costume

Hi smilydear...good to 'meet' you too

Krishna and his gyan is def a draw for me
The more I read and try to understand Draupadi, the more respect I have for this character. I just read Pratibha Ray's book "Yajnaseni' that gives an insight to Draupadi's life in first person...it's a great read for anyone intrigued by Draupadi

'The Palace of Illusions' was great too although i didn't care for the Karan-Draupadi love angle

Thanks for the information ... I'll definitely read "Yajnaseni" . I love to know more about people like Draupadi, Urmila(Lord Laxman's wife), Meera bai ... n a long list to know even the names of wonderful n strong Women.
for Karan - Draupadi's love this is true even in our literature they have mentioned that once they were done with all the responsibilities they went to forest and try to reach till Heaven and during that phase Draupadi was the first one to became a stone as She gives more preference to Arjun at some point of times . And this is quite natural she accept him as her husband from her heart and rest came as responsibility and the question is does all the pandavas love Draupadi the same ?

If you read "Yajnaseni,' you will realize that Draupadi was quite open about her partiality towards Arjun. Even Arjun loved her a lot but kept his feelings guarded as he wasn't too happy about sharing her. This book even highlights the fact that Arjun punished himself by entering Yudi's chamber when he was with Draupadi so he could be exiled for 12 years before he could enter into a conjugal relationship with her
Of course, Ved Vyas hasn't mentioned any of this except for Yudi's comment during their end of life journey. It's interesting to read different perspectives from various authors...just makes Draupadi more intriguing
